UV lighting thread

Nice thread :thumb:

This is a good read ;) -https://chilledgrowlights.com/education/why-you-should-include-uv-a-in-led-grow-lights

We should make a good Far Red thread as well, or just a thread about all the beyond PAR wavelenghts and how they ''signal'' cannabis plants to do certain things.

:passitleft:

You speak over my head. But be sure to include me if you start one. Seems this might still be a kept secret? I have powerful UV lights but no clue how to use them without killing my plants.
Definitely checking out your link. Try to get it linked up i can't cut and paste it either.

I have a far red "flower initiator" as well. Runs for 15-30 minutes after lights out and allows for a longer light period in flower... Its my first time using it tho, so i can't speak to how it works yet.

Oh like a setting sun ?

Yes. I have noticed using it that preflowers appeared much faster. First run with these GSC and they started showing at about a week after 12/12 started... This time they showed in about 2 days. Next week i start gradually increasing lights on from 12 hours to 13.5-14.

I use a couple fluorescent bulb from a company called "Eye Hortilux", it's a line they carry called 'PowerVeg', the one I use is FS+UV, I think 10% of it's output is FS(Full Spectrum) and the other 90% is UV A+B...I ran them on the exact same timer as my actual lights, so 12 hours/day in flower and never had any problems :thumb:

Increasing light on after flowering ?

It sounds weird, right? It allows you to run 14/10-13.5/10.5 cycle. The extra lights on time gives flowers an extra boost, from what ive read. The kit for the light was like $20 or $30 so i figured I'd give it a try.
I believe my led panel has ir and uv in it as well.

The problem I'm trying to work on in my mind.
If I run my UV dedicated bulbs for one hour my leaves burned. So I could do 15 min a day but it would be lump sum and not slow over time. Would short duration UV lights with high intensity be effective in causing the needed changes associated with exposure?

Kind of shocked you're burning your plants, I run the same type of bulb just different brand, and I ran them 12/12 with zero issues, only turned them off when I was working on the ladies....how far away are they from the source?

I was close the time I was experimenting. That's reassuring to hear. How far are you from the tops ? What size space? I was going to put them in today for ten minutes at the 6hr mark lol but I'm clueless here.

I tried them at all different distances here and there, for the most part I think I had them around 12", but without the proper instrument to read what was being output I really have no idea how to judge....but I know I didn't see any burn at all, and they were on the same timer as my lights were .

Nope one hour at 12 away and it yellowed and curled leaves over a few days. Ugh

Had some things going on in rl....haven't been able to look into the differences between the 2 bulbs yet....but sucks that it burns them on you

You have a UV meter to measure what you're outputting?

It's something on my list of things to pick up before I bring in any more UV light..still a few things I consider more needed though(RO system) before I grab one, but definitely on the list .

I got a portable r/o filter that I love. 150 and I can move it anywhere. I just ordered some led sticks with uv/ir to try as supplementary to my hps. Thinking it might be a start at getting a softer full spectrum idea.

I looked at them a bit more today, watched some comparison videos, looked at their spectrums etc. to try and compare the 2 to see why yours were burning.

Yours are much more dedicated to UV B light than the ones I use are, yours compare much more to that of a tanning bed bulb than it compares to mine by the looks of it actually.

Pulling these numbers out the top of my head so just best estimates at best, but I'd say the bulbs allocate their energy as such;
Agromax Pure UV: 10% FS(Full spectrum) - 65-70% UV B - 20-25% UV A
Eye Hortilux PowerVeg FS+UV: 10% FS - 40-45% UVB - 35-40% UV A

I saw Agromax also has a UV A Plus bulb, however I couldn't find enough info on it to include it. I'd suggest that it's too intense of UV B which is why it's causing the burn, seems very similar to tanning bed bulbs which you should only have limited exposure to as well :Namaste:

Thinking the same. I refuse not to have uv in my garden. I try to follow common sense and it just makes sense. Clearly the bulbs I got might be for a much larger operation then the Two plants. Prolly made for green houses and ceiling mounting with the amount of radiation they put off. Love the knowledge. Thank you for doing the numbers. I think the new bulbs on the way should do the trick. I'll post when they arrive.
