Tips for a newb

hello all,

I have been using this site for point of reference for about 3 months now. its provided plenty of insight.
I have recently started my first grow. its bag seed and I have been able to get five to sprout. i decided to go hydro to eliminate pest issues. i pampered the shit out of my first three sprouts. they looked really nice. i took the largest and decided to make a mother out of it. after 30 days of veg i moved the to largest pampered plants out to 12/12. two weeks later i discover i have been pampering males. doh! well i still had two vegging that i had been playing mad scientist with. topping....fimming......defolating. they were alive, but in bad shape. i decided to move them into 12/12 instead of throwing them out. well this time i had better results, they both turned out to be female. they are now on week 5 of flower. i have been able to create my own misting cloner. i am having 100% success making clones. i think i am getting lucky, but the mothers clones are very aggressive rooters. i have four clones from her (my mother is now been moved into 12/12, day three) two are about 4 days old and the other two are almost 4 weeks.
im using two kessill h350 magenta, a 90 watt ufo and a 300 watt equivilant cfl.
now i feel pretty good about my results so far. but my buds look so much smaller than most of the photos i see.
Btw, im very paranoid about showing pics. i hope you guys understand.
i was wondering if anyone had any secret ingredients that they used to fatten up their harvest?
the seeds were from good Canadian bud. i wouldn't have kept shwag seeds.
my first two plants look like they might yield half an ounce together. a lot of work for alittle reward, but im chalking it up to experience. they are really starting to get frosty. i looked at them thru a 60x and they are crystal clear still. im hoping it may be a longer flower time and im just clueless....... but right now....its lookin weak.
i have managed to get a perpetual grow going, i will be harvesting a plant a month. im very excited about this. i don't think i will ever have to pay for weed or use a dealer again.
so if anyone else has suffered from poor harvest and found a great fix for it....i would be all ears.

thanks for reading,
musshy

Hi ya Musshy :welcome:

hello G-daddy and Dewey :welcome: and thanks for responding.

yes patience........ not my best virtue, but I do feel like im getting better.
well I did some serious reading on defoliating last night and this morning I put that reading to work. my two bagseed plants that are flowering have gotten a serious haircut. im actually feeling alittle better about my grow. they seem to be swelling. I have never seen this happen before. I wish I would have started doing this 25 years ago. not only would I have saved ALOT of money, I would also have growing down by now.

I decided to try a seed bank and get some strong genetics. I bought some pineapple chunk and being a sucker for a good sativa, I bought some dr. grinspoon. both feminized. I cant wait to get them started. I plan on trying to make mothers out of both of them and harvesting a good indo and sativa every month.
I put my current mother into bloom. she was getting to big for my veg closet. she vegged for almost 4 months. its day five of 12/12 and she is already showing flowers. I have lollypopped and super cropped her. she is about 24" high and 35" wide. in 2 and a half weeks I will do a major defoliation on her. for some reason defoliating just makes sense to me.

I am loving growing. I never tried before. but while im working in my garden, I just lose track of time. I wish it was my full time job hahahaha.

anyways....... back to hurry up and wait.

hello friends.
tip (out of my own experience): dont make a bag seed your first mother.
though some bag seeds can be very nice, some can be exreamly crapy, and it will discourage you.
also, with bag seeds u wont know your recomended flowering time and other parmeters of the strain, which every breeder will provide you readly.
try to get good seeds in the internet or get a clone or seeds from someone that have 1 or 2 grows in his CV, if u know someone.
having good gentics will improve the out-of-your-hand parmeters and hence will give you a better outcome at the end, which in turn will make you happy and eager to grow more and more untill you will control the world, muaaahaaahhhh
;)
best

I had a nightmare of a first grow.. Biggest things I learned were that having a happy environment makes it so much easier to have happy plants. Second best thing I learned was to get a nice quality ph pen and ec tester so that you can know exactly how much you need to feed your plants. This will make your hydro much easier (practically a requirement). There are tons of options for nutes so you will need to be a little more specific on your current regiment and setup. Not many people will chime in either without pics, which can be tough. If you are paranoid to take/show your pictures would it help do a simple crop to focus on exactly what you want to show?

hello gomziel and :welcome:

thanks for the advice! I did recently invest in some strong genetics. just waiting on the package.
I may have gotten very lucky with my bagseed. it was good bud, I never save bad seeds.
my mother out grew her veg area so she has been set to flower. after five days she is showing flowers.
she will be a monster! she will make this experience fantastic! im so proud of her. I have six clones from her. two are in solo cups and have been in flower 12 days. they are flowering at every node. I have two in my cloner and two that have been vegging about 3 weeks or so. I may make one of those another mother.
I have two other bagseed plants that are almost at week six of flower. they aren't the biggest buds but they are very frosty and there was a huge learning curve. I very excited about them. I did a heavy defoliation on them and had quite a bit of sugar leaf. I made butter with those cuttings, then made blueberry muffins. they give a nice mellow buzz.

hello Bud,
yes I had a crash course on hydro with my first few trys. the first four months I raised males lol.
by the time I finally had a female, I had a pretty good set of nutes and was setting my ph to 5.8.
I have now seriously upgraded my lights so my next plant (the mom) will have a much better harvest.
I have already had to supercrop her to keep the canopy even. when she finishes stretching I will defoliate her.
she is keeping nice tight nodes, even in stretch.
I will get over my paranoia and get some shots of my grow and my nutes.

Hi Mussh.

Sorry I can't offer any assistance with hydro as I've grown in soil, but did want to pop by and offer a warm welcome to 420 Magazine.

I can offer that I agree with BudBGrowin in that a happy environment is key to maximizing the return on your efforts. This means not only temps, nutes, medium, but also abundant lighting. Can't really tell from the photos but I'm leaning toward suggesting your largest plant appears to be an indica sativa hybrid and that it may take a little longer than desired for the buds to plump up. I know I tend to get a little impatient as I approach the finish line of a grow and it seems to take forever for the buds to plump and trichomes to change.

Glad to hear your enjoying the process/journey of growing your own. It is quite addictive!

Again welcome to the site and community of members. Be well and happy growing.

thanks so much TanR!

I was hoping that it was sativa dominant. i have a 100x scope and trics are still crystal clear.
she seems to put on weight daily. but it is slow. i just figured i messed her up with all my experimenting and she has been stunted. like her cousin that is barely as tall as the clones resting on her bucket. she has red hairs mixing with her white and is twice as frosty as the larger one. i expect to maybe harvest 3 grams from her lol.

my room temp is about 74 degrees with very low humidity. i would guess humidity between 40-50. its very comfy in that room. im constantly kicking my cat out of it.

ive always been told to keep pets out of growing space(if you can) cats and dogs carry pest's, you will never see

i hear ya. but i put no restrictions on my cat. he is part of the family. he is strictly indoors and i can vouche he is clean. plus if i try to keep him out of somewhere, he gets pissy and digs the carpet up.

the most expensive part of the bubbler was the glass stem. it cost me about $15.00. it works perfectly.

he is great TanR. he is a social butterfly. if you came to my house he would be on your lap checking you out within moments.
i have grown up with many cats, but this guy is alittle different then all of them. he used to steal my wifes pillow at night. so we had to put a pet bed next to her pillow. one morning she was so frustrated with him stealing her pillow, she went to the guest room to try and sleep.

pillow thief.

did a reservoir change on all the girls today.
took a picture of the small plants flower. i'll probably only get a couple grams....but it was fun learning.
