TheEngineer - Grow Journal #1

You would need 420 Watts of real power usage / actual drawn watts.

calculated over the thumb the Mars II Panels should use 50% of what they are labeled. My 700W -> 350w, so if you need 450w actual drawn power it would be a 900w Panel.

(wall watts, because the power cord goes into the wall :D )

mmm, that's what I was afraid you might say - that means I am essentially saving very little in terms of power over the HPS, so I would need 2 x Spider Cobs, or as you say, a 900w Mars II.

thanks for helping :Namaste:

hey 'JohnC, when using watt guides, do you go by the total wattage of the LED unit, or is it the draw watts?

ie, if 400w LED = 600W HPS, is that draw wattage comparison, or is it a watt for watt comparison?

also, in the charts above, it suggests watts per square foot - again, is this drawn or the unit's total?

thanks for your help :Namaste:

Draw wattage is one aspect of how you rate one LED panel versus another, spectrum used, coverage area and PAR uMols. The Twilight Groups LED 432 watt Spider COB LED grow light should cover a 36"x36" area for flower. Twilight LED has told me that Twilight Groups LED is also working on larger COB LED grow lights for the Spider series for larger coverage areas.

Well, this may be the case for the Mars II lights, but it is definitely not the case for all LEDs. My light is 432 watts of LED goodness that draws 300 watts - and it is from the same vendor as the Mars II.

Exactly :) Thats why i said that it applies to the Mars II.

and, as KJC posted earlier, there are many factors to include in that calculation. Just thinking about the watts it draws is not enough, but can be enough in some situations.

I know that PAR is the key factor, but nobody has come forward yet with a completed LED grow that exceeds a 600w HPS one - please correct me if I am wrong, trust me, I really, really want to be :Namaste:

Yeah, but theengineer was taking that statement and rolling with it - as we all do. Hard to understand inference via type.

Thought it was useful and helpful to state, that is all.

Re: theengineer; grow journal #1

small update;

light baffle - this is just a cooker hood extractor vent, and on the inside is a 6" PC intake fan

and this is it covered, which blocks almost all light from getting into the tent

pretty simple, but I have seen a fair few threads on it

and the Amnesia Haze & Sour Diesel seem to love the HPS

Sour D's topping is healing

Re: theengineer; grow journal #1

haven't checked the Amnesia & Sour D as the light hasn't come on yet today, but the Jacks are looking OK

Jack #2 - LED burn recovery - got burned again....

Jack #2 - loving the LED, no burning at all - from same packet as above

and Barney's (6aR,9R)- N,N- diethyl- 7-methyl- 4,6,6a,7,8,9- hexahydroindolo- [4,3-fg] quinoline- 9-carboxamide has shown its head. it's been all about the sativas, but I fancy trying a strong indica now :)

sativas ftw - this is my current seed bank

lemon kush
og kush
sour diesel
amnesia haze
cotton candy
strawberry blue
sour diesel_c
jack diesel
barneys bad name
amnesia
critical silver haze

so I thought I needed another indica in there :Namaste:

you are most welcome - a Critical Jack Diesel just popped the surface, and an "original" Sour Diesel bean just popped its taproot, too - it's going to be a full house!

Depending on your outcome i would love to grow a Sour D in my next Batch too. But i also have Greenhouse - Cheese, RQS Critical, RQS Euforia, RQS Northern Lights and Greenhouse Arjan Ultra Haze #2. So i have to many options :D

this is the second Sour Diesel I have cultivated, the last one is the best me & my buddy have ever had, and I pulled 3.6 ounces from a .90 gallon pot - Royal Queen Seeds if you're interested.

I have a Cali Connection “original“ Sour Diesel just germ'd there, too - I like the SD, roll on Christmas :Namaste:

any input would be welcome :Namaste:

Jack Diesel is a non-start.

first time I have pushed the boat out and bought expensive seeds, and every one of them has been a dud.

Jack Diesel was from Positronics, and the Tahoe OG Kush & Original Sour Diesel are from Cali Connection, all 3 were duds.

Royal Queen Seeds have never let me down once; 100% germ to bowl ratio from them :Namaste:
