I try not to take both fan leaves from the same site at the same time. Remove the largest leaves sparingly and any that are blocking the light from reaching bud sites. Only take a few at a time as to not shock and stunt the plant, i do 4-6 at a time and space it out and take them every 2-3 days if she's really bushy and I hafta take a high number of leaves off. Its fine to take both fan leaves from the same site at different times but only after the other growing leaves have reached a suitable size as to replace the leaves you are removing. Remember fan leaves supply energy to your plants. At least this is my understanding and what I've read others have done when defoliating. Take a look at my journal. No ill affects to my girls by applying what I've said here. If Im wrong please somebody correct me so i can get it rite.

For defoliation with autos it's something of necessity rather than causal preening. They require as much productive sites as possible to live up to their potential. So for me, during veg I only remove leaves that are naturally being discarded by the plant. Usually from under her canopy. As we get into flower I'll wait until all vertical growth has stopped and see what buds need light. Then I'll remove all inward facing fans that are looming over the center of the plant. This will open up the core quite a bit. And as things develop you keep the budsites exposed so they can mature. Then it's just about picking off dying leaves as you approach harvest.

The Key with autos is less is best, but as you can see what buds will need light then strategically remove the ones that are necessary. Each grower has his preferred style, it's all about finding what works best for you. In the end a jar full buds is in the cards... :thumb:

Check out my journal maybe 30 posts back I have a question posed to me about defoliation. I went a little more in depth there..

So when you do the topping, do you just pinch that 4th set of leaves back to where they started?

Also, does this cause the plant to put out 2 new shoots from that node?

Thank you!

You give them I light bend back to expose the top then you can either pinch it off or cut with a pair of scissors be careful of the tiny little bits of growth either side as they will become your new main colas , it can make multiple my last lot some had 4 some had 3 it will premote good growth they already have grown these ones are going to be big !

I have a general question about autos. I,m into my first grow, I,m growing Northern Lights. The plant has been growing very slowly but the last week or so it has been gaining about an inch a day. The plant has been healthy looking through out the grow. It is now about 50 days old and is 19" high and about the same wide. I havent started bloom ferts yet because plant still seams to be growing.
Am I doing right or should I start Bloom fertilzers. Or am too late. Please looking for some wisdom out there thanks
