The Mountain: Grow Support From The Over 50 Club

I have ladybugs year round in my grow room. They thrive when I have pest, so most starve to death or fly out the door. They reappear regularly. These are the non native ladybugs, imported to Georgia years ago, to fight aphids on peach trees. They have spread across the south and are considered a nuisance pest by many! They fill my windows from multiple hatchings throughout the year! They have not helped with Whiteflies or Thrips. I do have far less(rare now) aphid problems in my outdoor ornamentals and fruit trees.
Same here at 40°N, house is infested with them ATM. I just put the corpses into the house plants, what the hell

Whacked all of her except one brach to see what could become, here's that branch. Looks about right to me, trichome-wise. Lost @ 15% to bud rot, which considering how wet late August was here is pretty good. Looked up specifics from company and this was lauded as very mold resistant. So I'm calling myself blessed and thankful for this harvest. Smells like duct tape after peeling off a foot of it, wow!!!
Be excellent to each other, party on Dudes

I can see the 20 gal Old Guy if I was gonna grow outside and photo's -- but I'm inside a 6x6x7 and autos are for only 90 days , can't see them filling out a 20 gal pot . But I do profess the use of all knowledge good and bad -- growing since 14 and at 61 I'm still in the learning phase..

This first grow with the new led is just for shits & giggles -- getting the feel of the new led -- all HPS before..

Happy Growing

Hi Uptheholler :ciao:

I have 2 questions for discussion.

Do you have any tips for home composting?

Does Cannabis have any companion plants that are useful in the grow room to keep bugs off, etc?

:thanks:

:Namaste:
I have found most bug problems of inside grows.
Come from clones from dispensaries or other outside sources. I had bug's/spider mites once. Came from clone purchased from dispensary. Had to stop growing for a month and restart grow. Always quarantine all seedlings/clones from other growers for a couple of weeks checking daily for infestation. If infested destroy seedling. Better to lose a seedling or 2 than a whole crop. Adding other plants to grow just takes up space and can contaminate grow with bug's also.

Agree with Pauly. Next year Im gonna do 25 Gal, ....Maybe More, 20's get Root Bound to easy when going for The Output size I Want. .My Thing Is, I have 5 Locations.... 5 Plants each...LOL, All are Over So Cal so I can supervise when need be. March 15th to October 15th. "SOUR DIESEL" One variety. I have grown One variety for Many Years. I like it, My people Like it. I buy clones from One Place for a very Long Time," in the Foothills of San Fernando Valley" Never, one Issue. I use the exact same Nutes and the same PH........ 6.1....Through the entire grow Period... Fox Farm soil.

Magnesium Is a Must for Root Health. starting right at the beginning. Then stop around 3 /4 Months in. Then>>>>> What I don't use for growth ..... I take a bath in it.LOL

I use General Hydro "grow" from one/2 Months........ Then first signs of flower I switch to General Hydro Flora and a taste of "Superthrive" Which has Been around forever.
I remove any leaf that doesn't look Perfect and GREEN.
I've never grown Indoors. way to Much fuss. I can grow 5 Plants legally and I do. LOL I usually top Out at about 12ft X 5ft. I have a 2 car garage and 4 Large Fans On Timers. see Pic. usually Dry/good to trim in 5 Days, and I use the same 5 friends who Get 2 OZ each manicured OZ's for their work Drives me nuts to sit for 8/10 Hours.
I also Make Pucs from the dried waste Ground up.

By The way I don't smoke anymore. Had Huge heart surgery 7 Years ago. and bye Bye tobacco and weed after 60 years. I just Love growing It. along with Roses and such..... I love felt Pots and How they Breath. there cheap and I throw them away and buy More every Year. Although I do get High Once Before selling especially to stores.
I Just threw them away. The stalks are the Size of Baseball Bats. LOL .

Old Guy those are impressive ladies -- I had to go outside this year because of bad indoor season. It's only legal to grow here if you have med card and the grow cannot be outside..

But this outdoor I experienced caterpillars and mites - and so did other fellow outdoor growers.. I don't have that problem with my indoor -- ( I think this last time I got shitty seeds) -

Bugs I avoid by planting seed - , clean room thoroughly before grow, - I had only grown enough for wife and I, now retirement is looming so I'm growing now for a little extra $$.

This gem was my Cement Shoes -- hit by mites, had to cut early to minimize damage -- still good weed. And once ya got a bug (as I've experienced) no amount of spraying , dusting , etc will eradicate the problem..

This lady was on her way to being a monster -- and I never had a problem with bugs before -- she still gave over a pound.

Clones : just use your own - period - , clones from outside your immediate care is inviting disaster.

Just planted my autos , Norther Berry - new led so I hope to have some fun.

Hi all! Another old-timer here to learn and share my experiences.

I've been tokin' for over 50 years and growing for 6 or 7. I'm into my first legal grow as I write... I'm a former microbiologist and very experienced in chemistry. Reading these forums taught me almost all I know about growing ganja. I prefer to keep things simple, so I've kind of settled into a pretty standard way of growing that works for my space and resources.

My current project: Durban Poison, Sour Diesel, White Widow
The DP and SD are a month older than the WW, but I'll deal with that when I flip.
The first photo below was taken just after the two girls were topped.

I grow in 3 gal cloth "Smart Pots" and use FFOF with about 10% additional Perlite. As you can see with the baby WW, I put the popped seeds directly into the 3 gal pot. I never lost a plant and it eliminates transplanting and handling the seedlings. I water the seedlings very carefully as they start out, only watering the area right around the seed. As the plant grows and roots spread, I expand the amount and area of watering. By 2 weeks, I'm watering/feeding the whole 3 gal pot.

I'm growing in a white painted 3 x 4 grow "room". I am running two 100-LED fixtures. Each LED array draws about 235 watts at the wall...measured with a clamp multimeter. The lamps are dual mode with veg and flower switches, but I keep full power on throughout the grow.

For feeding, I've settled on Alaska Fish Fertilizer (5-1-1) and Alaska Morbloom (0-10-10). I think the FFOF has enough nutrients for the first few weeks, so I start feeding after about 2 weeks. Initially, I use about 3 tbsp of FishFert and 3 ml of Cal-Mag solution per gallon of tap water. I had problems in early grows and I found that adding Cal-Mag from 2 weeks until close to harvest avoids problems. The few extra dollars are worth it for peace-of-mind. About 2 weeks after flip, I cut down to 1 tbsp of FishFert plus 1 tbsp of Morbloom per gallon of tap water. I always adjust pH to 6.0 - 6.4 with a "pH Up solution". The Morbloom contains phosphoric acid so adjusting pH requires some additional pH Up solution.

I've had a lot of experience in laboratories with measuring pH. I tried some cheap pH meters ($10-30). I don't recommend them. Unless they are used continuously, calibrated, and stored properly, they will not give reliable results. You have to buy calibration fluids to keep them working correctly. (note: during my science career, I've used $2000 pH meters regularly, so I know this stuff) Currently, I use Whatman pH indicator strips for pH measurements. These strips give results +/- 0.2 pH units, which is quite satisfactory for this work. When I prepare water/nutes, I follow a standard procedure every day, so I usually only have to use 1 strip per day (they are about 30-35 cents each) to check my solution. I find this better than messing with the cheap meters...I've thrown out 2 or 3 of them....not worth the money.

I flip to 12/12 at about 5 weeks after the seeds pop. The plants are around 12-15 inches tall when I flip. I only have a limited height available and I have to keep the plants under 25-30 inches. I expect about 2-3 ounces of dried/cured from each plant.

This is my Durban Poison about 2 weeks after the flip. I've done a lot of trimming on this plant...looking good to me.

Interesting thing happened with my Durban Poison. At about 4-5 weeks after sprouting, the plant started producing a lot of "preflowers/pistols"...more than I had seen in my previous grows. The photos above show the DP flowers to be quite further along than the SD. I've never grown a sativa strain like this and I was quite surprised to see the plant putting out flowers (or preflowers) so early while still under 18/6 lighting. Makes me wonder if this strain doesn't have some ruderalis genes mixed in...

I have another 6-8 weeks of fun ahead of me with this grow. New weed by New Years!

Anyways...time for me to get to the gym. I hope y'all enjoy my post....I welcome any and all comments and suggestions.

Good Growing Everyone!

Honestly. I would remove those huge Bottom Fan Leaves. They really have no value to feed.
I've seen that suggestion made by many other folks in lots of grow journals. Thinking as a biologist, I keep them until the plant starts to shut them down. It could be totally illogical, but I just don't like to trim them, even though I prune lower lateral shoots regularly. Also, I really like the looks of the large pretty green leaves. Can someone tell me if outdoor plants loose the lower leaves or keep them until Fall?

LOL! Thanks for your comment...

I remove them so all Power and Nutes go to Bud sites. Makes no sense to keep them. They use up Nutes for Nothing.

What I thought is that the leaves catch light/ sun energy (Photosynthesis) and help convert it to energy for the plant. I will pull leaves that are shaded or are shading bud sites.

OGT your buds look mighty fine... :hookah:

You are so right. If it's green let it grow. I trim smaller under growth small branches that won't produce and yellow leaves. Leaves produce the energy needed to for plant and bud's to grow. And during flower plant will scavenge nutrients from those leaves. Reason why leaves turn yellow and die while flowering.

I agree PaulyG! If they are green and look healthy, I let them be. You bring up a good point...those lower leaves provide a small amount of storage for both water and nutrients. When the leaves begin to senesce, the water and soluble nutes will move by diffusion to the main stem. I do trim them when I see the leaves starting to deteriorate or turn yellow or touch the soil. All said and done, I agree that trimming lower leaves won't hurt a well-maintained plant and definitely makes for a nicer looking and cleaner grow. Late in the grow, when I stop adding nitrogen, those lower leaves usually turn yellow anyways...

I see some mention of mites or other bugs getting at our indoor plants. Fortunately, I've had the problem once...some kind of aphid or flea. I was successful in getting rid of them with a 3-pronged attack! I got yellow bait/glue cards to get a handle on how many bugs were around by counting stuck bugs each day. I added water with crushed up mosquito dunks, and I kept to surface coated with a fine layer of diatomaceous earth. After about 2 weeks of treatment there were no more bugs.

I used site sponsor @Sierra Natural Science product "SNS-209" soil drench from sprout to harvest on my last grow, absolutely no pests during grow. Such a relief as my previous grow I had the dreaded spider mites. I also use Mosquito dunks in my RO reservoir. A good IPM is a must for any grow...
