The Great Outdoor Group Grow: Beastly Buds To Honor Bonsai

All that daylight and no time to grow :(

Hmmm... that is weird. I am not familiar with the different terminology that they are using astronomical, nautical, civil, etc. I was just using the table (scroll down from the graph) that showed sunrise and sunset. Those terms I understood. Ha!

It looks like if you add up "night" + "twilight" + "astronomical" + "civil" you get about 13 hours, and it gets you to sunrise/sunset times. Must be some more precise definitions of dusk etc.

I reckon, but it's well beyond my pay grade!

After I took that screenshot I scrolled down and saw what you were looking at even if I don't understand it. But I do get your original point about you getting more hours of sunlight closer to the North Pole as you are. ;)

Yup, me too. I was happy with sunrise/sunset. What I thought was more interesting was the idea that perhaps flowering is triggered as dark hours hit about 10 hours or more.

Santa sends his regards to LA, and says you have all been naughty. lol.

........

Depends on the strain.. correct if what your growing needs 10, some only 8 others more ,let's not discuss ones that dont need any at all :passitleft:

Around August 15 (where I live), darkness will hit 10 hours and increase (daylight of 14 hours and decreasing).
Awesome! So really I could put them "in the shed" nightly from July 15 - Aug 15 and let em finish! Thanks Bard! Out June 15...hummm maybe a garbage bag nightly in the bush lol. Ok. Game changer for me....I might be able to harden a few off.....I've koolbloom powder...and a bale of promix....

I'm guessing it will be July or even August before you see flowers.

I'll just keep giving grow nutes til I see pistils, just treat them like Autos.

Hi there! I am no expert on this, but thought I would share what I understand to be the case with outdoor grows. At least, this is my situation in southern Ontario, Canada. As of today, I will get 15 hours and 17 minutes of daylight. That increases by a few minutes each day, and will continue to do so until June 21, which is the longest day of the year, which will be 15 hours and 24 minutes long. After that, days will start getting shorter again, by a few minutes per day.

But my understanding is that the shortening days won't trigger flowering, but rather the number of hours of uninterrupted darkness. Around August 15 (where I live), darkness will hit 10 hours and increase (daylight of 14 hours and decreasing). Apparently that will trigger flowering. I will have about 8-10 weeks before first frost, from mid-August to mid/late October.

Not sure exactly where you are located, but imagine that you could find the corresponding daylength, darkness etc. data for your area. I do believe that June 21 will be the longest day of the year for you, as long as you are in the northern hemisphere.

Hope this helps a bit!

I'm appreciate the technical breakdown, I'm just living in limbo with the outdoor plants. In the mean time I got most of the backyard leveled, the GSD's really know how dig out an ankle breaker... Gloves, shovel, bucket, rake, hose, what a beautiful morning to be baked outside & enjoying some 'Rush in Rio.'

My outside plants show pistils around mid-July, down in Los Angeles.

So I've got 5 weeks of veg left, give or take?

Early/Mid July for me also -- approx 325 miles north of Shed.

Well Beez, after that little tid bit it's only gonna be an Auto, but I'm thinking the RQS Diesel AutoFem, Sativa 40% Indica 30% Ruderalis 30%. Should be a nice plant.

Follow up question for the group. Can someone help me out with this statement please?

"This is a fast and resilient strain that takes around 8–9 weeks to finish the whole growth cycle."

So... How long is the veg and/or flower? I've grown several Auto's now but this don't make no sense to me. 4-5 week veg and flower? Kinda feels like the 12/12 from seed statement. I'm rambling now sorry.

While I can't disagree with your statement, I'd still like to have somewhat of an idea. The Cherry Bomb Auto went long by two weeks and so did the Kush Auto, then the Purp AM kicked of at least one week early. Between the fridge, the drying rack, and the jars I'm gonna be running out of room.

Guess I'll roll the bones and see what happens!

Highya ITS, Guys,

I've always wondered wether the breeder counted the two weeks at flip before pistils show, in the flowering time info. I settled on yes, they did count the two weeks. Still wonder sometimes. Each strain is so different, and grow conditions are, as well. Just a crap shoot on the time. Do you feel lucky? lol!

Shed, A problem when I first started growing. I ordered purple haze seeds and they didn't finish because of time. Last year I grew carnival, and they finished much better. A little over a pound/plant. Buds were't that big due to the cooler nights, but were still very effective. So, this year I'm going with a strain, "Mobsta" (F1 from a female "Moose and Lobsta", don't know the male" that was bred for our fall. Supposed to be mold resistant, 63-75 days in flower, and 70/30 sativa/indica. Should be a great season. When I lived in Alaska, it was light all night. About 4 hrs the sun wasn't visible. In the dead of winter, sun up at 9 something and down at 1 something. 4 hrs. that's it. Cheers

They could also take longer depending on your grow conditions.

Ive stopped thinking about veg and flower stages with autos. It really doesn't matter. In terms of space management, my planning process allows 10 weeks. It surprising what that extra week or so gives you back in bud fattening.

Autos are interesting little plants. I had one in a solo cup for too long and the little darling popped some flowers. She was barely 3 inches tall and not yet 3 weeks old.

The Cherry Bomb Auto went long by two weeks and so did the Kush Auto,
Breeder's specs are serving suggestions anyway!
So far with my first auto, I have to agree. According to the breeder, my Lemon Potion should take 70 days germination to harvest and be 80-90 cm in height. Mine is only 53 cm and today it is 70 days old. It's not even close to being ready. I'm guessing a couple weeks more at least.

Makes me wonder about root bind causing flower in Autos. Ive gotta Purp Am Auto with roots at bottom of 5gln cup. Noticed that right about time pistils showed at 21 days.

I think the breeders may be intentionally vague and misleading. Like, “You’ll have a QP in 8 weeks...”

I was being optimistic, and am trying "fast" cultivars, versus autos, for my outdoor grow. My understanding is that fast genetics have ruderalis in them, just like autos do, but at a lower percentage. So the fast ones still need darkness to trigger flowering.

I am not sure why being root-bound would trigger the autos, though? Ruderalis in the wild (in the ground) wouldn't really be root-bound, but rather just move along quickly given they come from northern climates where seasons are really short. Now that has me curious...

20 hours of sun sounds great, except Alaska!

That's a myth that's been disproven here. They flower when they flower depending on all sorts of variables that the plant is taking into consideration.

I've had autos flower everywhere from 18 to 36 days, all in the same size pots.

I know that AKGramma has a theory that when the roots hit the bottom of a container, the flowering starts. Mine wasnt pot bound but the roots were all the way down the cup. I wonder if this is all just timing / age related. It will take the same elapsed time more or less to grow the roots that deep.

Shed do you recall where the posts are where the theory was disproven?
