The DIY COB Addiction

*worth not with

Setting up custom options was a lot easier than I thought. I set it so you can select square or linear 4 cob arrays. Switchable or non-switchable, chip kelvin and paint colour. The 4 cob custom feature will be ready tonight. I'll setup custom configurations for more models by the weekend.
Thanks for this great idea by the way.

Hey jimmy, I did just quick test, at 12in there was around 250micromol/... difference. That was quick spot test. I'll do better test this weekend when I'm off.

I tested a little lower with the 4000k D SE chips. I'm assembling a 5 cob tomorrow. I have a bunch of 37.7v L-series Vero 29 gen 7 chips I'm curious to see if 5 light up on a 240/1400.
Build is a 20"x20" frame, 16" spacing. I'll par test it and make a vid. Just wired up a Vero 18 five cob (upgradeable to 10) with four 4000k and a 1750k in the center.

Yeah man no problem, to me the major draw to the cob is the full spectrum in one chip and the 3500k is right in the money for both if you ask me, I would definitely buy a 4 cob square 3500k from you as they are nice, and 600 Canadian is like 430 us and I can make it myself for less then 320 so it's worth the extra to have it ready to go ya know

With out a doubt, that will be the key to your success, offer the best product possible and best price point possible, your light is very close to pacific light concepts 4 cob cree model but cost about 70 bucks less and looks better, very clean. You have made something to be proud of now all you need is to add more options and information and I can see you being right at the top my friend.

Hi guys,

Been thinking about building a COB array. My tent is 32" x 32" x 60".

I just want a basic setup. Am I on the right track with the items listed below?

Is CRI important? What's the difference between 80 or 90...as far as growing goes.?
What about a dimmer? Is it necessary? Is that another piece I need to add to the puzzle?

Any idea's or help would be greatly appreciated!

COBs - 5 x BXRC-35G10K0-D-73-SE

Heat sink - 5 x SST133 Passive Heatsink

Power Supply - HLG-185H-C1050B

You can save some bucks by using the 120mm heatsink. At 1050 you'll only push 35-37w per. On. No need for the extra expense. The 90 CRI is extremely beneficial for flowering. You'll get a tiny bit of stretch but the massive dank buds are worth it.
Also you can use the regular Gen Seven chips. They are slightly more powerful. The SE is best for people who can't solder very well. But either will do.
You can get the SE for $30 Canadian at Future Electronics.

If you don't want use a dimmer you have to solder yourself get the HLG-185h-c1050A. The dimmer is built into the driver. You need a screwdriver to adjust it.

Thanks JJ!!

Yeah, I got the cobs in the cart on Future Electronics....thanks to one of your posts.
I also found the heat sinks from your buddy at Northern Grow Lights.

So this combo should be good for my size tent?

Speaking of stretch....that's one of the reasons I am wanting new lights. I currently only use HPS throughout the grow and I experience quite a bit of stretch which I am told HPS lighting will do. I wold assume that the 90 CRI COB will still produce tighter nodes than what I am experiencing now.

Thanks again JJ!!

Well HPS contains mostly yellow light and almost no blue.

You're way better off with the Vero.

Though not shown the 3500k 90cri gets about 70% power to blues and 100% to reds. The reds are shifted to the 640nm peak range with the 90 CRI. Plenty of 660nm that flowers love.

I think you'll want a little more power out of those chips.. You could buy a hlg-320-1750a and have 300w on tap when you need it in flower.. Then as JJ said, use a screwdriver and dim down the driver to 150w or less when the plants are small.. This way you'll have your efficiency when you want it, and a blazing photon slinger when you need it..

You can always dim down on a powerful driver, but you can't dim up on a weak one...

Get the 90cri, your stretch will not be close to hps... Your buds will thank you..
Cheers
