The Deep Water Culture Home

Ok so I have been just runnin pure water cuz of nute burn (and root rot) for like a week with no problems, and yesterday I added nutes and guess what... THE NEXT DAY I GOT ALGAE, wat is up with that, if I get different nutes you think that would help. Because I noticed... at the begining of the grow I didnt have algea.. wasnt using nutes, and when I started using nutes is when the algae started. Now again I put nutes in algae imidiatly the next day. It has got to be the nutes, my rez is covered in reflective duct tape too! Anyways so if I were to get more nutes what would you guys suggest...
Thanks for all the help

I did a lot of research on algae a week and posted several times here some of what I learned. Most interesting is you can not get algae without nutes. Nutrients in the water are a requirement to grow algae.

It is not your nutes, it is LIGHT getting in the tank with water and nutes in the tank, causing the algae.

Let me share something I saw this week.

A grower had a 4 by 4 sq ft grow space, = 16 sq ft.

He needed a bare minimum of 3000 lumens per sq ft, to a max of 10,000 per sq ft, and 6000 or 7000 lumens per sq ft would be PERFECT, ample and ideal enough.

At bare minimum of 3000 lumens per sq ft, (less than half what the sun gives) he needed at least 48,000 lumens total. AT LEAST, BARE MINIMUM.

With CFLs, at 70 lumens per watt, he needed AT LEAST A BARE MINIMUM of 685 watts. He was growing with ten 26 watt bulbs, or 260 watts, much less than half of the bare minimum needed.

Let me repeat, he had 10 bulbs, (sounds like a lot) but he really had less than half the bare minimum needed. His ten bulbs were pretty in a DIY Reflector fixture and they looked like a lot of light, although they were much less than needed.
His plants were growing too, and were ten inches tall, after 3 weeks of VEgging in Hydro. They were ten inches tall, yea, but they were very, very stretched, looking for additional light. AND, they were not lush looking, they were very yellowed, leaves all twisted and curled and they were seriously nute burned. He could not understand why he had nute burn. He was following the directions perfectly on his nutes, was at a 550 - 600 ppm, but those directions were for someone with adeguate light.

WITHOUT ADEQUATE LIGHT, YOU HAVE TO REDUCE THE PPM AND AMOUNT OF NUTRIENTS FED TO THE PLANTS OR YOU WILL GET NUTE BURN.
Most instructions for feedings rely on you having adequate light!

AGAIN, WITHOUT ADEQUATE LIGHT, YOU HAVE TO REDUCE THE PPM AND AMOUNT OF NUTRIENTS FED TO THE PLANTS OR YOU WILL GET NUTE BURN.

AND CFLS need weaker nutes than HID lights.

I seem to be having a problem germinating seeds lately. It's cold here and they take longer to germinate and sprout. I have lost 4 femmed seeds in my SH tub and I'd like to know what I can use as a starter solution to encourange germination/sprouting and prevent bad things happening as well. I have some SM-90, but I dont know if I can use it with seeds. Can I?

I pre-soak them in luke warm, room temp pH balanced water for 18 hours first.

No, the SM-90 is not going to help them.

I check every nite for the smallest bit of slime on the edges, and the next nite it was algae pretty bad.. idk either but its really got me stuck.. Reflective tape+Peroxide+replacing airstones.. I've checked to see if its light proof and I can see any light.. only way would be thru the air lines.

Very often, the only way to get rid of algae is get all new inside parts and a new tank, or take it all apart and bleach it !

Thought I would post some pics here at our home of my budding AK 48 :grinjoint:

Today is day 36 of flower

GREAT JOB MAN :thumb:

Good Moring All. I don't post much because I don't have a grow going and my knowledge is still below par for this forum. I do read a lot and garner as much as I can so I will be ready when my window of opportunity opens up.

I just wanted to say that reading Rosemans tutorial I lean things that I would not even begin to ask about. Like the relationship between light and nutes. This never crossed my mind until now. Thank you again Roseman and all the other Deep Water Culture that pave the way for us to have successful grows!:yummy: :thumb:

He's a Giants fan man, can you believe it, a Giants fan!

Well, western division, don't you guys live out west?

And I know very little about baseball, but because my dad always pulled for the Giants if the Milwaukee -Atlanta Braves were not winning, I know that SF has won more games than any other team, and when I think of the Giants, I think of Willie Mays, Gaylord Perry,(my dad's all time favorite player) Orlando Cerpada, and Jackie Robinson, Felepe Alou, Willie McCovey, some of the greatest players there ever was..............opps, I'm reavealing I'm an old man here.
I could not name one player who played for the Giants since my dad died ten years ago.

Thanks friend.

I see many growers trying to grow with CFLs and use the amount of nutes that HID lights need. Thats why when I grew with CFLs, I used those weaker pre-measured, pre-packaged Stealth Hydro nutes. That and I did not have to learn anything about measuring them.

I need to correct this spindly problem here, all 28 days in, the roadrunner is a bit on the spindly side the trainwreck is looking a bit better and la women is is a upcomer. Tell me what your thoughts are, I did move the lighting closer to the tops but the cabinet can realy worm up.

As others have said, its not the nutes, the nutes just feed and allow the algae to thrive.

Brown Slime Algae is popping up more and more, and ruining people's grow. It does not require much if any light to thrive. I have placed some in water, in a 100% dark room, and it grew. Its nasty, hard to kill stuff.

Depending how far along the plants are, I would let them feed for a day. Drain the water. Scrub and clean everything. If the roots are covered in it, you may need to trim them back. When you refill the res, run 2tablespoon h202 per gallon of ph'd water. You can run this for a good 24-48 hours. Drain it out and refill with water and regular nutes. See how it does.

If it comes back, you may need to step up treatment and buy some Physan 20. It's fairly cheap, around $10 a bottle. Last forever as treatment is 1/4 TEASPOON per 10 gallons! If you get that far, let me know. More then willing to help you out there. RoorRip

What are the temps? Seeds tend to have a better germination rate with high humidity and 70*+ temps.

Are you germinating the seeds, then putting them in the rockwool, then losing it? Or are the beans just not germinating period? Or how are you germinating?

ghostgardener, whats the new avatar about?

GO GIANTS!

He's a Giants fan man, can you believe it, a Giants fan!

We got the Freak! Two time Cy Young Award winner baby!

Well, western division, don't you guys live out west?

I could not name one player who played for the Giants since my dad died ten years ago.

Alou had a small coaching career recently with SF also. I have tons of memorabilia including a ball signed by Willie Mays and Willie McCovey.

Can't forget the MAN, Mr. Bonds. Say what you will about his steroid use, he was still one of the best all time hitters in baseball. Hands down. The man was GOOD. Most of his accomplishments were made long before he got big and bulky anyway. He is one of six members in the 300-300 club and the ONLY member of the 400-400 club and 500-500 club. And something like 8 times Golden Glove winner. Amazing!

There we go RP, that's the answer he needed, I knew you had the info!

I grew up with the Milwaukee Braves. My grandparents used to take all us kids several times a year. I remember always taking my glove along with me just in case... But never any luck. Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews, I think he was my favorite!

I find it hard to really get behind the Brewers. Of course I haven't lived in Wisconsin since 1976! Probably longer than most of the guys on this board!

haha I remember wearing the glove too! good times.

My Dad and his brothers used to go to the games almost weekly for the Giants. They literally had two dresser drawers full of pop-flys, foul balls, etc. One of my Dad's brothers had Polio so bad that he was in a wheelchair. They would flip him balls, or bring him down in the dugout. That's how I got the Willie Mays/Willie McCovey signed balled. They were his favorite players, so he asked them for autographs. Pretty cool.

As a child, we visited my dad's home state once a year and always went to a Braves game. Remember the "RED HOTS, get your RED HOTS right here"!!!!
You never see them anymore.
And Dad always let us have one of those little 6 ounce bottles of beer then too. Schlitz was the name. I don't think it is around now either.

!

RP, next time I see an algae problem here, I;'ll send them your way. I have had algae in my aquarium, and bought something at Walmart to get rid of it. I wonder if that stuff would help any, or kill the plants? It didn't hurt the fish!
