The Bonsai Sultan Method: Typological Breeding In Little Space

There are some good pics out there from people much better at it than I at Bonsai, but here's my first attempt at a Bonsai Mom. She's about five months old and her stalk is about 1/2" thick and right around 5" tall and 6" wide in this pic taken a couple of weeks ago:

That'll work. The main point is to maintain the shoot/root balance in a small space and container. I let my mothers get large, take a bunch of cuttings, and head her back to about the 4 lowest branches pruned to two nodes each. LST works great for small mothers, I just bent my Line#2, the Mazar, and Mr. Nice mothers, will post some pix after they have grown a little.

What size pot is she in, MK, a 6"?

Yeah, I had mentioned in my journal that I made her too small and I've been trying to let her grow out a little...I'll try to post some pics of her this weekend, but, believe it or not, she's in a 16oz cup right now that's only about 4" wide at the top. I read a thread where a guy was keeping 3" bonsais in 3" containers and went a little short! :)

Would the bonsai method work on an auto flowering plant? They are small plants anyway.

RGF, while you can probably Bonsai an auto to keep it short, as you noted, the autos tend to stay pretty short anyways and there are other ways to control height (LST, etc.).

More important, is that the "Bonsai Sultan Method" is all about breeding and for that, you need to take lots of clones. Autos are definately NOT conducive to cloning.

The autos don't flower based on light cycles. They are genetically programmed to flower after some period of time. Because the clones share the same genetic makeup, they would all go into flower at the same time as the mother, and by the time the mother is big enough to take clones, she's already very close to flowering. This makes it ALMOST impossible to take clones from autos and certainly makes them difficult to use in a breeding program.

If you want an auto, you would take some other desirable strain and cross it with a ruderalis to get the autoflowering trait.

So this is maximum interesting but it's more fun to take the best clone special female, grow her up big, prune and isolate branches and use like 5 or 6 male pollens to make a bunch of seeds or different cross variety. Then spend like 5 years never really knowing what the pheno of your cross you will see. Thinking that every ww x og cross is gonna be same just not true. It's like yeah smokin sisters but then again I like the idea ...... Bump

this is actually kinda interesting! please keep the updates coming!

Chapter 13

When inbreeding using the bonsai sultan ...
We do not know how long this window will remain open. By working together, and breeding, we can secure the future of this venerable plant for ourselves and those around us.

END

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Joshua Hazen

Another THANK YOU, Josh; I too am gonna' be saved 5+ years of doing something less than my potential. Some A-W-E-S-O-M-E information. I already have a similar set-up so following your lead should be relatively eazy! Thank you for taking all the time (I know it took) to provide that post. Kuddos and Reps 2 boot!
Appreciative in Sam Jo,
Paul

very cool info. thank's

This was a great read. It gave me some good tips... like male selection. I am limited in my # of flowering females ... but I keep at it, slow but sure :cheesygrinsmiley:

No offense, but that article bored me to death. There's an older article much more informative about making bonsai moms and dads. The fellow who wrote the older article got busted and lost a 25 year old mother. Nevertheless, it was more about making and maintaining bonsais for years than breeding. I'm convinced that all students of breeding should turn to landrace strains for broad diversity in their genetic material. There's already too many strains with crazy names. I hope the next generation will focus on healing people, return to the basics and find those jewels in the rough. Again, I didn't intend to offend.

No offense taken. The article on Bonsai Mom's you're referring to, I believe is this one:

Bonsai Mothers

I have it posted in one or two of my journals.

But, the Sultan Method is specifically for conducting a scientific breeding program in a small space that gives rapid results. It assumes you're already familliar with how to create & maintain Bonsais.

If you're not interested in breeding, have plenty of space, are already familliar with selecting moms & dads and crossing strains, or you just don't like long articles, I can understand how you'd be bored. :Namaste:

Just read this article. Thanks Mr Krip!

I'm just getting my basement growing, but I have plenty of room. I've been interested in breeding, but was hesitant. Reading this has got me excited to try it again. I'm glad I read it now too. I've got 23 seed plants about to flip to 12/12.

What do you think about using the same male for several generations by storing the pollen? Won't pollen keep in the fridge or freezer for a couple years? hmmmmm.... maybe that's an experiment I'll have to run myself! So many concepts and techniques in this thread. My head is spinning with all the ideas.

Already repped ya, but I'll try and send more when I can. :Namaste:

Thanks, Hiker! :thanks:

Yes, you can store the pollen in the freezer and it should last at LEAST a couple of years assuming it's also dark & dry, so you may want to add a dessicant to the storage container.

Subbed, Good info for the future!
Any idea how to find seed breeders in US to buy seed in bulk?

You seem like you know what you're talking about.
Could you advise me on the hazy strain best suited for SOG? (height doesn't matter much).
It has to be potent, yield and clone well, and thrive in SOG conditions.

I have been growing Kandy Kush - the most successful bean I had out of 6. None of the Sativa-dominant plants that I cultivated in the past were potent enough to keep.
Which one of the most known stains would you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the good words...

Here's my nickel-bag's worth:

There are NO legal seed distributors in the USA and, technically, it's not legal to receive them from outside of the USA (coming from a NON-attorney!).

That being said, the sponsors here on :420: have been well-vetted and are dependable, albeit, expensive in bulk.

If you're looking for bulk, I'd recommend getting a few good strains and doing some breeding. It doesn't take much to get you more seeds than you'll ever know what to do with!

As for which strains are best, I'd be surprised to find anyone who's sampled even 1% of the available strains out there, and the effects are largely dependent on personal opinion and the effects you're hoping to achieve. Even of the few strains I grow, I always have a tough time deciding which one I like best.

I do believe Indicas are more suited to SOG, but that is a generalization and I'm sure you can get some good crosses that grow like an Indica and smoke like a Sativa! :yummy:

You'll hear a lot of people saying GREAT things about "Lucy" (like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - only just the initials!). I really enjoy and do recommend Pineapple Express. I just received another seed order a couple of weeks ago and have some HIGH hopes for White Fruit and LA Woman.

If you're interested in SOG, you should checkout 420fied's SOG journals. He's been growing Snow White and he's the "King" of SOG.

Just remember, it's not about finding the perfect strain - it's the fun you have searching for it! :)
:goodluck:
