Stunger's Organic Soil Stealth Balcony: Landrace Mulanje & Other Sativas

That is crazy. Id be super interested to see the steps you took.

I say that as I had a bunch of undeveloped seeds back a cpl years and could not get a single sprout.

Whatever you did obviously went in your favour. Look you dont have to I only ask as it will still be fresh in your mind.

Bet you're glad you held onto them. 16 days just seems so short. Who knew?
It is surprising, but steps? Just as in the post, an initial soaking in water with a bit of H2O2, I wetted a bit of paper towel and sealed them on it in a ziplock bag and put in a dark out of the way kitchen cupboard, on the 3rd day (today), sprouts seen. I guess as recent seeds they have had 6 weeks or so to 'set' and be ready for germination. But at just 16 days, it is interesting to find them turn out actually viable.
Update: I have just checked being the end of the 3rd day, and there are now 4 seeds that have sprouted! Camera's still on charge.

Wow! I'm surprised, too.

I like your bagging technique.

I do the same thing with simply laying the seeds on the damp paper towel inside the bag rather than in between multiple layers. Then I lay that, seeds down, in a dark cupboard. Makes checking on them as easy as flipping the bag over rather than opening the bag, pulling the paper towel out and then trying to find the seam to peel them apart, and then sticking the whole thing back in.

Yeah I am surprised, 3 have sprouted from 5 now.

Thanks Carmen, I really thought by their pale immature looks and knowing they were only 16 days old, that they would be rather unlikely to germinate, so now they have.. hmm.. Winter starts next month, I suppose if they survive that then they'd be keepers! haha, I dunno really.
@Lerugged has success growing sativas in our Cape winter. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes!

Sorry mate Im being a pita. I probably should have bothered to read your intial post properly, which I did after I asked, and it had every detail I was after save the relevant temps.

Ill have a good lie down for 8 hours and give myself a proper talking to in the morning. I dont have to have a long neck to make a goose of myself haha.

Cheers Azi, I like doing it this way as I can instantly check what's going on without opening it.

Thanks Carmen, he grows endless beauties. I never thought of trying to grow over winter, something to think on isn't it.

No worries DV8, I'm like that most of the time. The temps is just indoor unheated temp, I think it was supposed to be 17/18C today, maybe a couple more indoors.

That's awesome on the seed germination! Mulanje x Mulanje right? So they are S1 seeds right? Any plans to grow one out next year and then pollinate it again?
Pretty sure S1 refers to a reversed female pollinating itself, or a clone from the same mother. Or a clone of itself.
Is there a term for seeds from a male and a female of the same strain/cultivar?

Thanks Hob. I think youre right. So maybe those Mulanje seeds are F1 then? :hmmmm:

Umm, I think that's just hybrids. These are a landrace, so I think they're just seeds.
I did a search earlier, and I didn't find any answer as to what you would call them.
We need a shrug emoji, lol.

I used a male Mulanje to pollinate a female Mulanje to make these regular seeds (even if are rather immature)

That's how I understood it too. So won't be S1 as these came from regular pollen.

I understand F1 to be hybrids which is what the resulting seeds of my 3 other selectively pollinated girls will be, but the Mulanje has been pollinated with another Mulanje so the offspring will still a landrace. Yep Mel is right we need a shrug emoji!

Uh-oh...is this the beginning of Stungers first- ever winter grow? ;)
Just need to talk Mrs.Stunger into a little greenhouse on that balcony....

Thanks Carcass, I only did it for a viability test as I still have plenty more of the seeds, but now they've popped it does leave me thinking what to do as I dislike waste.
:smokin2:

Grow those bad girls out yo. They should be plenty mould resistant. Just don't expect massive yields but some will give like average for an outo, maybe more. And tighter nugs with waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more terps and frost. Cheers and good luck

Plus, you really should test grow them to be sure that they grow normally, even if not fully ripened. Be a shame to stake your next season's grow on unproven seeds.

Maybe just a small 2x2 tent with good training techniques and a short veg.

Would prove your stash of seeds, give you a grow to watch over and give the rest of us something to look forward to.

So, if nothing else, think of the rest of us as you make your decision. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Actually not as crazy as it sounds.

Bunnings got those little cheapy greenhouse kits, Im sure they ship those sorts of products all over the world. Like $30 Aud (thats like a couple hundred NZD haha) get you a 2 x 3 size.

Lets be honest, if you fill the balcony during summer, I see no reason why winter would be a problem, like function and space wise.

But might be a light phase issue. Gonna be tough to get that balance right without supplementary lighting.

It is a good thing this place isn't full of a bunch of enablers! But seriously...you need to 100% consider this right here.
So, if nothing else, think of the rest of us as you make your decision. :cheesygrinsmiley:

So you don't really have a choice it seems. No vacation for you!

All in favor?!

A short breather and back in! :woohoo:
Welcome back Otter!
Well the ayes have it, thank you all for your persuasive support!

I have planted all 4 sprouted 16 day old Mulanje seeds. As why not, they're sprouted, Winter's coming, but no loss now to see what happens. I half filled them with some old dry used soil and topped each container with some 'fresh' soil from my rotating composter which these days I use as a second worm farm that I also throw old soil into to be 'refreshed'.

Keep well all. :ganjamon:
