Spider mites

Good day to all,
I'm going to start growing again, indoors, and the last time I grew, four years ago. I had spider mites bad. Oh thank you for the free plant. Anyway how long do the eggs last before dying and what could I do to really clean the area. Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Spider mites/eggs don't last too long. Females can over overwinter in the soil, but unless your using the same soil I wouldn't worry too much. Two options I have used: You can spray/wipe a chlorine solution in the tent, pots/tools (that will kill mold spores too). Or you could spray with pyrethrin, which is an insecticide that degrades quickly in light. Do it a couple weeks before you use the tent/grow area. Any plants I'm given or purchased get dipped in a pyrethrin solution before they go in the tent, I learned the hard way too! But, after 4 years you will not have any of the original "Borg" colony left.

Thanks Phytoplankton,
I will start today spraying. I not even close to growing. I'm switching to LED and haven't ordered it yet.

Or you could spray with pyrethrin
I second this. I spray it on the outside edges of the tent, zippers, etc. Then I also spray the inside of the tent. A sort of pyrethrin bomb if you will. It is not a good thing to be inhaling though and it needs to be properly ventilated for a while before you or any animals can be around it. It is powerful stuff though and will act as a deterrent for some time.

Thanks Baked,
I have it so I will spray it.

Oh, also I don't normally spray with the plants in the tent. It's just one less thing to worry about. I usually "air" out the tent for a good hour before putting the plants back in. I've only treated with it a few times in the growing environment. I have used it for years in around reptiles to keep mites away.

Also, another tip is that lice spray is a good alternative and quite effective. Milder than what I use and a good, less expensive alternative for maintenance applications around the outside of the tent.

Thanks again Baked. I understood what you were saying. The lice spray I hadn't heard of but will keep it in mind.

You could also use site sponsor product, @Sierra Natural Science SNS-209 soil drench for a IPM. I had spider mites over a year ago and have been using SNS-209 weekly since then. I grow indoors and have had no pests or mites since adding this to my IPM.

Vegan4life,
I've used their product a fair amount in the past. A little spendy but did the job. Thanks for the heads up.
