Soil from scratch?

Re: Soil from scratch

Baxbax, I can't reply to your private message yet. funny rules.

I used the following soil mix for my pots.
the mix is still being cooked (?) since i'm waiting for my seedlings to get bigger before transplanting them to this mix.

It's neither a totally hydro, nor a totally soil mix.

and for seeds germination, I used this mix : Coco-Manure-Perlite, proportions : 8-1-2 respectively. (no other additives)

where do you find banana peel ? did you buy pre made banana powder or you make it your self ? if its home made tell me , i wanna use some because its K booster

I told a few Fruit-Juice shops around the town to save me some banana peel (instead of throwing it away in trash) when they're gonna make banana-milk-shakes or other juices. they didn't do much (~half Kg)
So I headed to a marriage party, and gathered all the peels over the served plates of fruits.
then I dried them, for two days (hell of hot sun, cracker dry) then used a food processor to make a fine ground powder of them.
then poured that powder in a pan, and heated it up (while stirring constantly) till the point I saw some smokes raising from it.
It is not a complete ash (as it's still brown, not black), so it needs at least a few days in soil to be available to plant (probably a few weeks)

But my soil was well cooked when I transferred the seedlings into the pots.
They seemed too slow to grow first weeks, till I kinda guessed they lack micro elements. and used a MicroElement solution by foliar feeding method.
they upper paled yellow-green leaves turned nice green and healthy in 2 days, and other leaves are now getting bigger to a daily-detectable level. (see that kinda word usage :scratchinghead:)

I was thinking same you to how collect banana peels

I'll post some pics tomorrow.
along with these two seedlings, I got 15 (±2) Pure Afghani seedlings, they're a week old and seem happy so far.
all the same soil-mix as the given table, except, the soil in Afghani seedlings pots had very little banana peel added to it (ran out of it)

hey , Is there any reason u dried them ( banana peels ) under sun instead drying and cooking them straight in pan ?

yeah, to be able to grind them in food processor.
some teks and YouTube videos suggest using microwave to dry fresh banana peel. they'll be cracker dry in a few minutes.

Also, you can use peels of orange, cucumber, or melons (specially Cantaloupe), they're just as effective as banana, some have even more K.

Sorry, it's midnight now, and today I had no time to take pics or anything.
got a full time job, leaving home 8 AM, coming home 1 AM.

The last pic, the plant showed some burning-like signs on leaves, but actually it had some deficiencies.
cause I knew with my soil mix no NPK burning was possible. so after adding the micro elements through foliar feeding, as you see, new leaves are happy and the whole plant is growing again.
these plants are actually 34 days old, but were stunted for like 2 weeks or so.
happy to see them growin again

god, why uploading pics to this website sucks?
my uploads finish, but an error pops up.
anyway, can't upload the Afghanis, but they're all happy, except for 1 problem.

the seedlings are healthy, and the stems are OK too, but the very base of the stems are weak, and the whole plants are leaning against something.
this weakness of stems is ONLY at base of stems,at soil level.
Does anyone ever had this problem ? what's the cause and what's the solution ti it ?

Did you check that you have the allowed format of pictures> jpg, jpeg, gif, png
and the size: 10000kb file size limit

yeah, have only used PC so far.
I'll try again tonight (~6 hrs)

I put the larger pots of Afghani seedlings in open air, and direct sunlight.
just read somewhere a little wind will strengthen the stems.

And here's a few of the Afghani seedlings.
I sowed 17 seeds, 13 popped out of soil.
One week under CFL+LED lights, then I transferred them to bigger pots :

Two got big 10L pots (2.5 gallon pots), one got a 3L pot (0.8 gallon) and the others share pot :
two seedlings in a big 15L pot (~4 gallon) , two other seedlings in a 3 gallon bucket, two more in another 3gal bucket.
and the last 4 in a small 1 gallon pot. don't know how they gonna struggle for their root to fit in there :hmmmm:

here's a few pics, couldn't upload more.

And forgot to mention, I transferred the biggest pot and the buckets (6 seedlings) to sunny place. Natural light ftw.
and the winds around here kill humans let alone my poor seedlings with their already weak stems. today one of them was dead when I checked. the others were leaning on soil, though their leaves are healthy and fine.
I used some sticks and bands to help them stand up again.

Sry didn't have time to check your journal..had some emergency re potting in my garden..My 6 babies were leaning like yours...

I hope yours are fine now. I made a Y shape of a pipe cleaner and a bent straw to keep them up.. we will see now...

The strong wind is something you need to be careful with. No way you can "cut the wind off" without loosing sun?

was thinking of making them a small home. like a glassy wall around them, and over them.
like a room.
but since I lost half of my salary in poker this week, that's not gonna happen so soon.
