In 1975 the members of the British Progressive Rock group YES took the year off at the height of their popularity and focused attention on developing and producing solo albums.
Fish Out of Water was bassist Chris Squire’s resulting effort.
While not a smash hit sales wise, this record is considered to be the best of the 5 members solo projects and was critically acclaimed around the world.
This album shows Squire’s penchant for being able to develop excellent music using the bass guitar as the main instrument in a very melodic and rhythmic way. His vocals are very strong as can be heard throughout all of YES’ albums, although here he takes the lead instead of the backing.
He enlisted the help of former YES drummer Bill Bruford and the bass and drums interplay is pretty awesome throughout. Also helping out on keyboards was current YES member Patrick Moraz.
What makes the album special is his use of a small orchestra.
His arrangements are very interesting and sophisticated, yet not overbearing or pretentious. The orchestra was used just right, and really highlighted his musical ideas .
If you like excellent bass playing, tight jazzy drumming, uplifting, positive and thoughtful lyrics as well as a heavy dose of Progressive Rock, then this LP is highly recommended.
It’s been a favorite of mine for decades.
What’s also a favorite of mine is some of this Gorilla Glue #4 that I grew indoors.
Very stoney, pungent and aromatic.
Goes great with this music
