Scientific's Coconut Coir Dwarf Low Flyer Summer Pot In An Air Pot Grow

Day 55 -- Switching to "Late Bloom" nutes a week early and diluted 60%

She is looking mature enough now that I'm going to switch her to Week 9 "Late Bloom" nutes (more phosphorous) diluted to 60% (360 PPM) of Nebula Haze's recommended level to avoid further nute burn.

The plant looks great and continues to slowly fill in its buds (though they're still not big) and add trichomes (though they're still not pronounced and the plant is not at all sticky or especially aromatic).

Predicted Yield
I'm guessing that the average bud weight is going to be about 7.5 grams wet, so x 8 buds = 60 grams wet and maybe 12 grams dry? Plus she's not very sticky, so I'm going to guess the buds will be closer to 5% THC than the 10% that Crop King predicts and that I think I got last time under 24-hour lights, so not a big yield at all, but this grow hasn't run up my electric bill, either, and has been a fun project and a nice addition to the plants on my deck.

PPM out is way down, but will come back up to the 300s, which I think is a sustainable, non-burning level

Great job so far. Looks great man. Think I've been lucky with no gnats so far through 3 grows in coco. I should get some neem oil or whatever your using just in case though. It is safe to use during flower?

Thanks FN -- The Bayer organic "Natria" 1% Neem oil spray I got says it can be used "on fruits or flowers" right up to the day of harvest. Still, I don't want any neem oil on my buds, so I just spray the coco and the base of the pot. 2 weeks of consistent applications seem to have worked.

I walk out on my deck and just stare stupidly at my plant all the time (and sniff it too). There are tomatoes, a sunflower, a fuchsia, wildflowers, and all kinds of stuff out there, but the pot plant is my favorite and gets all the love and attention. ;)

As it should, not everyone grows "weeds" and can be proud of it!:thumb:

:) The other fun part is consuming the product. Getting high from a plant that you raised from seed is just somehow different from getting high from the stuff you bought from the guy down at the alley behind the bank (in my old neighborhood) or at the pot shop (post legalization).

Way back then I always thought the stuff I grew was top notch...probably a little bit of prejudice was involved but it sold fast!:laughtwo:

We know SO much more now than we used to. I remember back in the 70s a guy from California explaining to me about "sensimilya" that they didn't let get pollinated and how much better it was. I was a little skeptical. Rolling up leaves and stems had always worked for me. ;)

Lol. Back in the day everyone that grew, even the ones growing ditch weed, thought their stuff was top notch stuff. Maybe your a good salesman? Don't get me wrong... looking at your current ladies, it's very easy to see your an old pro.

It was pretty good weed, probably not as good as the bag the seeds were from, but had the taste, smell and dense buds...salesmanship was a small part...timing was the big part...when it was dry, anything was worth something!:laughtwo:

I Found the "Drain to Waste" video that I liked and lost

This video is nothing special--just one of the seemingly endless number of them out there shot with a handheld camera with some plants, an annoying ventilation system, and a voiceover, but he does a good job of summarizing the advantages of a coco grow (including advocating for putting is all on a pump and a timer).

Just FYI...

Day 57 -- Foot-long Node 2 Branch Is Filling In

When I topped her on day 20, leaving just nodes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, the growth tips at node 2 immediately started growing like crazy. Both branches are now a foot long on a plant that is only 14" tall. What's cool is that they are filling in along their entire lengths.

Hey Scientific!

Plant is looking amazing, looking pretty frosty.
I kept a plant outside and going to see how the natural cycle works without bringing the plant in and out. Might have to pick up some fake flowers to trick the neighbors aha.
Pretty amazing how much the plant veges in sunlight compared to artificial sunlight in my tent.

Are you still using the Flora Grow in flower?
I am about 2-3 weeks behind you in my tent grow, following Nebulas Schedule.

Day 59 -- Miscellaneous notes on the grow

Thanks gr0w!

Fiat Lux
As I've said, she's filling in and getting some trichomes, but nothing like her predecessor that got 24-hour a day light in a hydroponic root bath, which according to my log made it "a sticky mess at this age." ;) But she's also not costing me 50 cents a day in electricity (money well spent, but I was still surprised at how much my grow boosted my electricity bill--and our electricity is cheap here! She is getting eight hours a day of natural sunlight just about every day at up to 90,000+ lumens. :thumb:

Camouflage & Concealment
The fake flowers worked better when she was young. Now that she's eight big stalks of flowers they are a little less convincing. Some big fake zinnias would help, but just keeping the line of sight obscured with a couple of big tomato plants seems to work well enough. The plus side of her not being super dank is that she's not broadcasting her presence to the neighbors' noses.

Clouds on our sunniest day of the year
As I said, I chose the growing period for this plant to coincide with the very brief dry and sunny period here on the Pacific Northwest coast. As a matter of fact, today, July 28th, is statistically the driest and sunniest day of the year here (but it's cloudy out there this morning >:( ).

Tip burn looks slightly worse--400 PPM max for this strain
I posted two photos earlier of the burned tips that I got from too concentrated nutes. That tip burn has gotten worse since. Though it's only yellow tips at the very end of new growth, it disappointed me because it spoiled an otherwise trouble-free grow, but live a learn. And really, it's interesting to push things until they break; that's how you learn. And what I've learned over two grows of Dwarf Low Flyer, one hydro and one coco, is that about 400 PPM is the max it can take over a week or more. More than that or longer than that, the tips start complaining.

Nutes: 70%-strength, 360 PPM
Below (in the "Me" row) is the nutrient mix I used this week. It was supposed to be 70% of Nebula Haze's already diluted GH "Drain-to-Waste" mixture, but I mistakenly added 70% of the week 8 Flora Gro. No big deal, but the mistake transported me right back to working in a lab years ago (only this time no irritable boss to try to explain it to/hide it from ;)).

Week 9 Nutrient Schedule: General Hydroponics, Nebula Haze, Scientific
FloraMicro, FloraGro, FloraBloom (ml/gallon)
Nute FM FG FB
GH : 4.0 0.0 8.0
NH : 2.5 0.0 3.8
Me : 1.8 0.4 2.6 <-- 70% strength NH, but I mistakenly added 70% strength week 8 FloraGro
Ca/Mg supplementation
I always add 2.5 ml/gallon (schizophrenic US units) of CALiMAGic to my nutes. When I reduced it to 1.25 ml in my last grow, I got coppery-brown spots on some of the leaves that I'm almost certain were from not enough calcium. No problem with that this time.

When to harvest?
I keep thinking she's getting really close to harvest even though it's still four days before her earliest calculated harvest date (6 weeks from first preflower) and 20 days before the harvest date for the preceding hydro grow. I took a good look at the trichomes yesterday and they're still mostly clear even though the pistils are getting brown.

One more week of diluted Late Bloom
I'm going to mix up another batch of Nebula's Late bloom nutes at the 70% strength level shown above (only no FloraGro this time!), but I suspect that may be the last batch before she goes on a three-or-so day pH'd water harvest flush.

And finally, a photo!

Dwarf Low Flyer outdoor grow in coco coir in and air pot on day 58. The only thing that looks different from a week ago is that her buds continue to fill in and slowly develop more trichomes
(I guess I need to rearrange her camouflage flowers, which keep getting lost in the real flowers now. ;))

care to revise your harvest estimate!:thumb:

Oh golly, I don't know what to expect. I was blown away when the 24/0 hydro grow came in with over half a kilo wet from a single dwarf. This gal is only getting sun till 2 PM so is not nearly so bionic in mass or stickyness, but as Freddie da Weedking says, for a plant just sitting out on the deck soaking up the morning sun, she's doing great and definitely worth the effort. I'm planning to post a side-by-side comparison when the harvest comes in in August. :)
