Runtz X Afghani And A Little Bokashi Soil

Aaah hate when someone's already using your name lol yeah it's definitely not like that here I've been told off once for posting off topics in the growing section but it was a kind message to say what I done and how I should have done it that's it obviously if you take the piss you just get the boot but would have to be something bad.
I thought of a great name but I already started using this one so now it’s permanent. CL🍀

I was going to wait until fall to make some Bokashi soil. But this journal does say, And a little Bokashi soil.
So I might as well make some now.
This is a several step process, so it will fit right in with this run.
There's probably as many ways of doing this as there is people that do it, this is just what I do.

I may as well start with the first thing I need and am out of at the moment.
Lactic Acid Bacteria "AKA" LAB.
All this is.. 1.5 cups of rice and 3 cups of water.
Wash the rice in the water for a few minutes, and strain it into a jar.
Then just cover it with a paper towel and put it in the cupboard for a few days.
We'll have to get back to this when it's time.

After I got that taken care of I'm off to camp.
I went up and got around 15 gallons of forest floor.
Word of warning first on this step.
If you're going to get forest floor, make sure you are getting it from private property...
If DCNR or the Fish and Game catch you just willy nilly out on a mountain taking soil, they WILL make an example of you.
With that said let's move on.
After I got my FF from like 10 different spots on the mountain, I put it in a tote and mixed it together.
Then it's into plastic bags and in the basement.
This is just going to sit until I need it.

Next up you will need a Bokashi bucket.
You can either buy one or make your own, believe me it's much cheaper to make than buy one.
2 - 5 gallon buckets and a tight fitting lid with a way to drain it.
Nothing complicated about that.
If you decide to make one, be sure to put silicone calking between the two so you can keep your bucket as air tight as possible, Bokashi pre-compost is done in an air tight environment.
You can use Dr. Interwebs for diy buckets and see how people make theirs.

Update: This is a beautiful way to start the week.. 5/28/23 and the RXA decided to join the conversation.
2 days from soil to surface, that's not too bad.
At this point all I can do is wait until she's above the hey then put the DE around it and cover the spot in the center.
Let's see what another week brings 💚

Update 5/29/23: Today I'm three days deep into the rice wash for the LAB. The top is looking nasty and it has a slightly sour smell to it, and the starch is settled out.
I pulled the top half inch or so off with the baster. Now just take 1-cup from the middle and put it in 10 cups of whole milk.
Give it a light mix, cover it with a paper towel and put it back in the cupboard. I don't know if it matters if you separate the top, middle and bottom, but it's just what I do. I only use between the lines, everything else is sink drain material.
Let's see what a few more days bring 💚

Interested as hell. I always got confused about LAB when reading, so was kinda scared to try it. I've used FPJ and FFJ, but thats about it. Thanks for explaining this so simply! Gonna follow along.
I've only been organic for about a year now. LAB is the first thing I learned how to make. If you want/need a really good source of calcium, check out how to make water soluble calcium "WCA". I'm having just as much fun making stuff as I am growing.
I'm glad you are finding something in this journal helpful.

Update on the LAB 6/1/23. This morning I looked in on the LAB and would you look at this beautiful conglomerate of ugliness.
The rice wash and milk are starting to work together and do what nature does. It's not going to be long and I can make the Bokashi bran and get busy with the pre-compost for the soil. At this point in the process it's been around 40 hours scene I put the rice wash in the milk.
Let's see what a few more days bring 💚

Although these two girls have nothing to do with this journal they have everything to do with the Bokashi soil.
Today is feed day for them and I got to thinking about something.
As I put everything together for the soil, you'll notice that I don't add any amendments to it.
It's not that I don't want to, it's the simple fact that I don't know if I should or not. And if I should, I don't know what or how much to use and it scares me that I will mess it up.
I'm hoping that someone with more experience than me will be able to jump in and give us all some advice of what, when and how much to use if any.
Anyway here's a look at my girls today.
The one in front is a Super Lemon Haze.
Back is a Big Bud V2.
Both will end week 6 Sunday.
I know they're small but they have been on 12/12 from the start

Great journal so far bro ✌🏽

I feed them the extract that drains from the bucket during the pre-compost stage. I freeze it in icecube trays but I'll get into that when the time comes. I've been wanting to start playing with different amenities that I can put in the soil as it cooks but I'm afraid to blow it up.

Update on the LAB 6/3/23.
The LAB is done and ready for the next step in the Bokashi process.
You will have to get everything separated, how you choose to is completely up to you.
You have to get the curds out and strain it as good as you can. Not real easy but not hard.
You can store the LAB in the refrigerator and keep it for, some say a year others say 6 months. I use mine for drain cleaner after 6 months and make new. Your LAB, your call.

Let's make some Bokashi bran..
For this you're going to need..
Half gallon of water.
1lb wheat bran, you can get this from just about any feed store, I pay like 9 bucks for a 40lb bag .
1.5 tsp unsulfured molasses.
1.5 tsp LAB.
Mix the water, molasses and LAB and add it to the wheat bran.
As you mix it up, you will be looking for the consistency of a sugar cookie dough.. it will stay together when you squeeze it but will fall apart easily when you touch it. It's just one of those things you have to feel.
Make sure that when you squeeze it, it's not overly wet.
If it is just add a bit more wheat bran.

Once you get everything mixed and feeling good to you it's time to put it away.
Put your bran in a plastic bag and wrap it up with plastic wrap.
Try to keep as much air out of it as you can.
Now just put it in a dark warm spot and let it go. I put mine in my Bokashi bucket and set it in the kitchen.
We'll see this in 2 weeks 💚
Having fun yet

Update 6/4/23: And just like that we have a one week old Runtz X Afghani seedling.
Other than the fact I got my soil just a little on the wet side when I got the pot ready, everything seems to be on track.
Due to a technical issue I finally had to do away with my old seedling light and put up my other grow light.
All in all everything seems to be getting on.
Let's see what another week brings 💚
