Rainbow Runtz: First Strain Review

Hi Everyone,

My first strain review. I've always been a strain hound. Now that I grow, it's gotten worse. Lmao. I also am in contact with several buddies who grow in one form or another. This is my review of RAINBOW RUNTZ, which I just got from a grower friend of mine - his current crop.

Strain Name - Rainbow Runtz
From - A fellow grower who grew this from feminized seeds from Exotic Genetix in soil under LEDs in a 10x10 grow room
When - He harvested the last week of January. Dried and cured total of almost five weeks before coming to me. Got this today, 3/2/21
Price - Irrelevant in this case but this is certainly $50+/eighth weed if it were sold in the dispensaries here. Think $400 oz.
Type - Sativa leaning hybrid that is a cross of Rainbow Chip x Runtz. Apparently this is one of those strains where more than one breeder chose the same name. I hate when that happens. Anyway, this particular review is on the strain as described.
Appearance - Colors are lots of purple, deep dark green, a silvery trichome-y sheen, some red, and various other shades of green. It is FROSTY with trichomes. The buds are dense - not insanely so but good, solid density. Dense enough that you definitely want to grind them, and you want the trichomes in the base of your grinder. My friend did an experienced job on the dry and cure and pretty much brought out the best in this bud to my eyes.
Smell - WHOA the smell. Two worlds here: One - pre grind, in bud form - the smell from the bag is immediately strong, pungent, dank, fruity, and primarily lemony/citrusy. Two - post grind - this is where the magic happens. The smell is EXTREMELY fruity, VERY sweet, with a significant sourness in the background to it, and honestly it smells EXACTLY AND PRECISELY like when you open a box of Fruity Pebbles cereal. No joke. That's just exactly what it smells like ground up. Strong strong smell. When I opened the bag my roommate was at my door (I'm at the whole other end of the house) within minutes telling me to take that shit outside. Ha!
Taste -Again, WHOA. This may be this strain's finest hour. I expected lots of sweetness and fruit, and it has that in droves. But when smoked, at least to my palette, the sourness comes more forward. In a really really good way. It balances the sweetness and brings a serious complexity to the fruit element. Where upon smelling in the bag it seemed primarily lemony, and upon grinding primarily fruity/sweet, upon smoking I got all kinds of specific fruit notes. Lemon for sure. That's the strongest flavor but not overwhelmingly so at all. Well balanced with a combination of a decent amount of orange, a little grape, a little grapefruit, a little peach (!), and maybe a tiny twinge of apple even, although that may have been my wishful thinking. The taste to me was much much more complex than I thought it would be.
Smoke - I smoked from a clean bong with cold bottled water. The smoke is dense and creamy. Not at all harsh. I was able to take very large hits without a cough from the smoke itself. It's smooth. It's also expansive, and that did get me once. Lol. Great, enjoyable on the palette smoke that is smooth enough to blow out of your nose, which I do to help me gauge the taste. Out of the nose it even gives you a small peppery element, very subtle. The smoke itself is not quite white either - just a slight shade of cream off of regular white. Interesting.
Type of Buzz - Quick background - I am partially paralyzed from the waist down and have a ton of various back pains. I always was a smoker anyway, but as a result of managing my back pain I am a daily day and night smoker for the last five years. My tolerance is very high, and my personal preference leans sativa or sativa heavy hybrids by a mile. So I say that because "type of buzz" is really "type of buzz as it affected me personally." Cuz this one is different for everyone, right? So from a pothead point of view, the buzz is pretty well balanced and leans strongly sativa for me. It's cerebral, and is going to be great weed to jam on. I can feel the creativity flowing. It's pretty "up," although balanced enough to not be racy. It hit me HARD in the head (the good way) immediately upon exhale pretty much...definitely not creeper weed for me. More like an immediate ton of bricks. It made my eyes start to sweat which is always a good sign. The hit from a good sized ripper flowed from the top of my head down to about not quite my shoulders. I wouldn't say it was nearly as strong a body buzz compared to the head, although that may be a function of my friend's tendency to harvest at all milky/no amber, as apparently these were. (My preference too) From a medical point of view, I am no doctor but I know what works on my back pain. Certain strains more than others. This one, after about five minutes, brought me a noticeable degree of relief. So for what it's worth, it had a positive medical effect for me. I'd call it middle of the road in that regard, at least for me. Noticeable relief, not overwhelming. Definitely enough to call it a plus though.
Length of Buzz - I did three good sized bong hits in about a fifteen minute time frame from being sober and clear headed. As I type this it is about an hour and a half later and I have yet to feel any less stoned than I did in the beginning. Maybe a bit more body as the buzz goes on. Potency - As it did not come from a dispensary and has not been tested, I don't actually know the numbers or official potency. But based on my buzz, the length and strength of it, and my reasonable level of experience comparing strains/potencies, I am *guessing* it is within the 23 - 26 percent THC range. It is plenty powerful. Not rookie bud by any means.
Best Medicinal Use - Too early to say anything other than that it had a noticeably positive effect on my level of back pain after a few minutes of smoking, so for me that's the best medicinal use.
Overall - I now understand why Runtz is one of the current most popular strains in the U.S. If I could get this strain at the dispensary it would be my first choice compared to almost anything else I've seen here. This weed DESTROYS the dispensary weed in this state, which is part of why we all grow I'm sure. It's a flavor festival in your mouth. It's gorgeous. It's strong with a fabulous, long-lasting buzz. It smells amazing. I will be growing this asap, as I must have much more of this. I'm super impressed. I'm 55 and I am rarely super impressed. Nice job on my buddy's part, but the strain....wow. This is the only Runtz strain I've ever tried so unfortunately I can't compare it to any of the now plethora of Runtz crosses that are out there. But I would recommend this strain BIG TIME and without hesitation. I don't make extracts or oil or shatter or any of that, but I imagine this strain would be GREAT for those purposes.

SO THE PICTURES. Since my buddy grew this and we talk several times a week, I followed his grow with keen interest. As such, I have some pictures of the actual plant itself that created this test bud. Or at least the plants the bud came from. So I posted four pics in chronological order. The first is the plant itself in his grow room getting closer to harvest from sometime in January. The second is the final product he produced from the plant and sent to me. The third is some of the bud broken up in the grinder but not yet ground, which hopefully shows the crystal through and through. The final is an ultra closeup (as close as my tech will let me get) of the ground weed, which hopefully shows the incredible purples in this strain.

I hope I did this okay. Enjoy the bud porn everyone!

I tried the Rainbow Runtz from Hypno, and although it was an auto strain, I had a good experience with it
