Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

Evenin' Rad. Glad to hear you spent a week at least immersed in writing. That's a good place ..

Garden doing its thing. What did happen with that carnival? It's the same plant, yeah? At different stages? Like you say, still producing so all still good there

Wishing you a very excellent time enjoying you & yours this festive season ..

Looking good overall. Hopefully you get the hempies going. I haven't tried any yet to see how they do for me.

I like the guawi. It's swelling up. Hopefully you'll get a good harvest from it.

12/22 a Guawi clone in a hempy bucket went into the flower area. It looks better than the other hempies.

She was 65 days since a cutting and 16" hgh with a 19" x 22" canopy.

12/27 - The Guawi mother, over 4 ft tall, was ready for harvest after 112 days of veg (from seed) and 93 days of flower.

An F1 from a Malawi (african) sativa mother and an Tikal 4 (Guatemalan) sativa father she has SOLID open petaled flowers.

The largest cola isn't huge, but it's not at all bad :)

20171227_134843-1.jpg

Her top buds were about 90% cloudy with lower buds (pictured here) 100% cloudy.

20171227_134901-1.jpg

She had so many dried leaves, I decided to skip the initial trim and bud wash first. Lots of dry leaves in the wash water.

20171227_142443.jpg

My fingers got stickier in the wash than ever before - and the usual amount of sticky during the trim.

20171227_142923.jpg

I'm guessing a little under 3 oz when dry.

You got my envy juices flowing with than one, Rado. :cheesygrinsmiley: That is a seriously fine harvest for a plant so difficult to grow - very well done! The character of those buds is ... beguiling.

:bravo:

The Carnival I harvested 9-10 days ago was weighed yesterday at 67 grams = 2 and 1/3 oz.

I have 2 carnivals in veg, 2 cuttings in the cloner, and 1 carnival in flower. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation clones of one mother.

Carnival - 30 days in the flower area. This is my last plant in Doc Bud soil right now - the rest are in hempy.

20171227_134228-1.jpg

She is a typical, happy Carnival 'reaching for the sky' just before lights out.

At 30 days, the pistils are just starting to show color change.

Happy little Carnival cola

She's a nice stinky one - very lemony citrus... My Carnival and Haze x Kali China have been going very cat piss lately, so maybe she will be a bit cat piss too once I smell her on her own.

I don't have a good picture of the flowers. If most flowers are many small leaved flowers, tight like peonies. Guawi's flowers have less petals and look a lot like minature rose buds. If you've ever seen a guinea pig whose fur forms circular whirls, her buds seem to have circular whirls like that.

I know the look you mean, like a whorled flower bud, a primitive carved wood rosette knob or something. That's hard to achieve in a sativa!

I think you're going to like that smoke, too - good genes. :cheesygrinsmiley:

A look at at struggling hempy plant. This Guawi is a few days older, and a clone twin to the Guawi hempy I just put into flower.

You see a lot of brown leaves, like late flower, but she is in veg. She is in a 1-ish gallon 6" tube instead of a 3-gal 12" bucket.

20171224_123049-1.jpg

I decided she might just be low on nutrients and drying out too much.
I pulled her from her tube and added another 10ml osmocote (poked in various spots) to bring her up to 30ml osmocote.

I have switched my hempy watering from every 3 days to every 2 days.

Happy Holidaze buddy... Green :Namaste:

Thanks bud. I haven't done the Christmas Holiday for a decade. Never did the Hanukkah.
Had dinner and drinks with the wife for Winter Solstice (go sun! We want longer days again.)

We had a 3" snowfall for Christmas eve day, making for a pretty white Christmas, and noone in the family took pictures because the high the last 3 days was 8F (-13C.) and the over night lows are full negative. I went grocery shopping today and it was halfway to frostbite in the parking lot without gloves.

I'm not a total grinch, I put little candles (night lights) in the front windows this year. They look very victorian. A friend of ours just bought a prohibition era gangster house 2 blocks away, so we have another delightfully weird neighbor in the neighbothood.

Wishing you and yours the best of the holidays and the New Year.

I actually completed my first draft and first edit of a novel. I formatted it this evening in 'print layout' on Google Docs and it came to 493 pages. If I rip out all the sex scenes I can probably get it down to 300 something pages

Happy Holidays - I'm happy for anyone who finds joy in the season.

I've been out of touch with the boards, but with all the historical research I am doing on my wife's book (very likely to be published in 2020) and finishing up my novel, I've been burning the candle at both ends BEFORE jumping on the internet.

Why would you want to take the best parts out of the book? :laughtwo: That is great that you and your wife are both writing. I enjoy reading but could never write anything that had a clear focus and wasnt dull. Nice harvest you had there Rad. i hope that finicky one in Hempy turns around for you.

Congrats on the harvest... not the prettiest with all the dead fans but we ain't smoking pictures or fan leaves! Good job..

That's the way we like em, hanging upside down on the hook & then in the can! Boom

I know you explained it a while back but I can't remember. Why hempy pots and not Doc Buds kit?? Your Doc Bud kit plant looks spectacular! That would be hard for me to walk away from tbh.

Cold blast from the north... brrrrr it''d be some what OK if there was snow... we go nothing but -10C and I'm sure the Canutsk up north have it way worse... I can't imagine how cold it is up there now.

Keep warm... and keep green... 2 more months it will be getting green outside ... just a little bit more snow...

I am not walking away from Doc Buds soil, I just was expecting the basement outside the grow areas to get down to the 40s this winter - so I can't cook 'soil.' Plus it seemed I was losing vigor cooking soil in 14 gallon batches instead of larges batches and I just don't have a warm place to store soil.

So my plan was to switch to hempy for the winter and cook soil in the spring.

- - -

I'm rethinking that plan. Sure I've got beat up leaves by harvest time, but the last few harvests have been my best smoke ever. The basement is not getting as cold as I expected. The main basement is in the high 40s but the 14x20' basement room that houses my grow and flower areas is holding steady in the mid 50s.

I'm having a heck of a time getting seeds to grow, and the 3 seeds I have tried germinating in perlite failed - it's possible 2 of them would have "damped off" anyway, but it's frustrating. I suppose I can start my seedlings in soil and then move to hempy - but I am finding this part of hempy difficult.

Clones take a long time to hook up in large pots, but they seem like they are fine in smaller starter pots.

My plants aren't vegging appreciably faster in the hempy perlite, so I am not feeling this to be a hempy advantage.

I'm not getting the nutrients and PH right for the osmocote+ in perlite yet. Some plants are OK. None are breathtakingly pretty.
I'm worried I will lose some of my strains if I continue to try to grow hempy.

- - -

When I consider having to work with liquid nutes again, I'm seriously rethinking gong back to the Doc bud soil immediately.

- - -

I was thinking about how to cook soil and keep it warm.

If I give up my chair in the veg area, I have a rain barrel I can use to cook soil. I hate to give up my chair to sit and talk with the girl, water, etc. but it is eventually worth it.

- - -

OK. consider me inspired, I'm going to get out hat rain barrel and see how it fits!

That sounds like a good plan Rad. Glad to hear your temps down there might be ok for soil cooking after all. Good luck with the rain barrel. I know what you mean about having somewhere to sit near your girls ., I'm like that too. Although I tend to just stare at them, it never gets old. They'd probably like it if I chatted more ;)

Super news about all the writing and proofreading going on around there. Your Christmas period sounds a bit like ours, mark the solstice and enjoy some quiet time to get some work done while everyone else is busy .. In the past it's been a very productive time (getting stoned and watching the cricket notwithstanding!). Be excellent during the cold as well. Curl up with a blanket and a hot beverage and read your partner's latest chapter... sounds perfect.

.

I went out into the balmy 11F (-11C) snow and retrieved the rain barrel. Fortuitously not heavy.

20171228_144334.jpg

I checked the warm basement around the grow areas and the thermometer said 50F (10C.) That seemed too cool for 'cooking' soil, so
I moved the light, table and everything else about 8" to the back wall to make room for the 22" (60 gal) rain barrel.

20171228_150750-1.jpg

I didn't have to move the Hanging Guawi :)

20171228_150818-1.jpg

Thanks for the kick in butt Bobrown!

Once I warm back up, I'll start moving things round in the 40F+ area of the basement to check my supplies and make space for mixing soil. I might not have enough worm castings. My worms stopped producing and I'm not sure how much is left in the WiggleWorm bag.

I have enough soil for two 45 gallon batches. The first will be 2nd run soil, and after that I'll be on 3rd run soil.
