Radogast's 2018 Basement Adventure

I think I was angrier after the Hobbit than I’ve ever been from a movie. Was quite the massacre I thought. I adore the LOTR films - except I have the extended versions, not so keen on the cinema release. But yeah, the hobbit? Way to kill the storybook character.

No amount of hooch makes me think any differently about it unfortunately. Haven’t braved the second one yet!

I watched all of them cause I am a huge fan of Fantasy and I grew up reading all of Tolkien's stuff. Was disappointed with it compared to LoTR for sure though. But having said that, it was still better than 95% of movies out there IMO.

I agree. But how do they stretch one book into three movies and still cut so many characters? o_O

Ha! By making up a whole lot of shite that wasn’t in the book!! And turning a story book into a platform for a game.
Either to many if not enough joints at the creataive brainstorming sessions! (Lame attempt to get back on topic - oh yeah... pipe weed!)

:Namaste:

Hey, I didn't say it was a work of art! LOL

I don't know.....I had high hopes (no pun intended) of it being as good as LoTR.....but alas it wasn't to be!

I guess I shall still subject myself to the torture then and watch the hobbit... Like you said van, better than 95% of crap out there lol ... I felt similar to Amy after watching Harry potter films, only watched the first two and never gone back!

sorry for the hijack rad lol would love to see the shop when you guys get it all finished up!

Sorry to hear about the bulb failure. Wondered if the cobs would take up the slack for a while.

Sounds like things are starting to come together at the store. Good thing the wife didn't catch you waving/flirting with the hot store owner across the street. Lol.

My blue dream looks like she is ready for harvest and I'll probably take her down tonight.

I couldn't find the COBs in my crowded basement this morning, so I went with my old school 300w LEDs in saddlebag formation

LEDs in front, HPS in back

I saw your Blue Dream was coming. Still one of the daughters favorites.

Nice are going back to hps n mh completly and not use led any more? And lol yea i caught those words thts what prompted me to ask cause im into all that stuff n it really piqued my curiosity n got me thinkn what kind if a store it was. So now im excited for the big reveal unless u mentioned it b4 and i missed in which my bad lol. But yea once ur up and fully running u guna post any pics? It sure does sound like ur hands r full man well hope it all works out good for ya man

LED hasn't worked for me yet - maybe if I buy a good one. Left my powerball lottery ticket at home so don't know of I can afford a good one :)

I didn't see eye of newt on your list.

I have Dead Man Ash and Death Flower (in yellow and red), but I didn't have any Eye of Newt in the attic, it's on order, should be here with the official herb order by the 25th.

I could really use some Peruvian instant darkness power! Sounds like a shop a would visit for sure!

Glad to see the garden looking joyful. Happy clones! Hope the light hicup doesn’t rock the boat.

:ciao:

Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder is one of those new Weasley enterprise products. We don't have a vendor reseller states with them. Not so easy to establish after Brexit. We won't be carrying their products in 2018.

Peter Jackson.....yeah he did a great job with the LoTR series. He didn't do quite as well with the Hobbit trilogy though.

Don't go blaming Peter Jackson on that. He consulted with Steven Colbert, one of the world's foremost Tolkein experts who, quite rightly in my opinion, felt the Hobbit book was too weak to stand on its own. They cut and pasted the most cogent pieces of the Silmarillion to weave a more complete narrative than the Hobbit alone. The dwarves appear to be as reckless and thoughtless as humans, which from the perspective of us Istari seems about right.

The hobbit has great characters. There is one hero in it, Radagast, that I quite admire.

- no hijack here. I love the Lord of The Rings movies (including the Hobbit.) We watch them 2-3 times per year. I dressed as a dwarf with braided beard for the first Hobbit movie :) This exactly the conversation I would have in person.

My favorite JK Rowling book is The Casual Vacancy, (I'm in a real minority there) but I totally admire her ability to create a common visual identity for her characters in her books. I was afraid the movies would be visually disappointing but was pleasantly surprised. Walking through the movie set of Hagrid's Hut and watching the kids be 'Sorted' by the sorting hat, I was impressed. They made the props durable and as realistic as possible - chipped wood, not resin painted to look like chipped wood.

Yeah - I actually really liked the introduction of plot lines from The Silmarilion (including more of the Radogast story!) - it was things like the 15minute video game style chase of the dragon through the tunnels of the lonely mountain that ired me ;)

But ultimately I think The Hobbit is a storybook and that character (of the novel) got a but lost. I was looking forward to the conversational play with the dragon, but - there wasn’t any... maybe I’ll bite the bullet, toke “a bowl” (as they say) and watch it again. Maybe I’ll read it and the Silmarilion again before I do... hmmm ... that’s gonna take some time... better have a few! :volcano-smiley:

I usually get a bit bored by fight scenes. They put them in movies for boys to enjoy. I think Peter Jackson has a lot of buy in him.

The word play with the three trolls seems liek they included the whole scene from the book, and it's one of the best scenes.

Clue words in my previous post

'Harry Potter Room'. . . wand cabinet. . . Tarot and Oracle decks. . . (wands, brooms, crystal energy sets.) . . . herbal formulary . . . witch prepared herbal mixes. . . tea room/classroom.

I'm going to rehang the LED/COB lights to tide me over until the new bulb arrives

That should work... hit with a PM I have extra 600w bulbs I'll never use. A handful of em.

Plants are looking great.. The DT grows pretty fast the Lab is no slouch. Hopefully they are S1 so female but never know until we do.

I'm going to have to watch the hobbit this weekend... It's a long weekend up here, not sure what you folks south of the border do lol... But i should be able to find the time. Have LoTR extended versions as well, i cherish them!

I love good fight scenes... For me, when well done, they are like dances..but I have always been into that style of weaponry/era.... If you wanted to best your opponent you had to be skillful, obviously lucky as well, but skill triumphed. Not a point and shoot like a gun.

I'm a big fan of David gemmells fantasy series.

Use to love game of thrones books but i hate he made the TV show before finishing the last book(s). Two different story lines and I wonder how the TV show will impact how he finishes the novels.

glad to see your garden is back on track with lights! Have a good one all!

Any one read any of the series by R.A. Salvatore? If you are a fan of fantasy, he is as good of a writer as I have found. His descriptions of the sword fights have me completely in awe of a person being able to describe it the way he does....and see it exactly play out in my mind as I am reading it. Great character development as well

I tried to read the Game of Throne books - they read more like screen plays than novels. I just couldn't get into them.

I enjoy the Chinese Martial arts movie fight cenes for their imaginative creativity. They are dances :)

The last fight scene I enjoyed in a box office hit was "Troy" (2004). They gave Achilles (Brad Pitt) a stylistic way of fighting that set him apart and 'justified' him winning. Not that the style would acually work, being so committed to airborn moves, but it made his fighting appear 'epic.' Reminded me of the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" moves.

I had a couple of R A Salvatore books around for 2-3 years, but I never got my hands onto a complete series - so I didn't read them. (When I'm reading, I like to read a full series back to back.)

I read the first 12 Drizzt books along with the 2 trilogies that came after it. I had to stop after that. the world changed way too much for my liking by that point and I couldn't invest myself into it any more. I also read the Cleric Quintet about Caderly and enjoyed that as well. It is funny the first Drizzt book took me like 2 or 3 months to read. I read the same page probably 50 times at one point. I just could not get into it. It wasnt until about 3/4s of the way through it that I was finally invested in the story enough to really dig it. After that the other 11 in the series took me no time at all. You are right about R.A Salvatore's way with describing fight scenes. I will say though that by the end of the 18 books I felt that he described Drizzt's fights in a very similar way over and over. Still he did an amazing job capturing the intricacies of sword play with his words.

Definitely worth investing the time and effort into the series. Like Yeti says.....it changes a lot near the end (most of the main characters are no longer around etc) and it doesn't have the draw that the first 15-18 books have. The Cleric Quintet was great! Loved the character development he had with Ivan and Pikel Bouldershoulder! Those two dwarves were responsible for a lot of strange looks coming my way from me literally busting out laughing in airports and on planes and in restaurants.

Interesting thing about his charter series was how it came to be. The 1st book that was written is the 4th in the timeline. The main character of that book was supposed to be the barbarian but the dynamic nature of the supporting character made the author change everything he intended with the book. The book was met with such fanfare they wanted to know more about the "Drizzt". So books 1, 2, and 3 were written after 4, 5, and 6 and gave the story on how Drizzt came to be.

The Bouldershoulder's definitely helped move the books along. Lots of comic relief. I had heard the 4th book had been writen first but did not know her also wrote the 5 and 6th before he went back to the beginning. I may go back to explore the world again at some point but have found other series to keep me busy. I can't think of his name but there is the other dark elf that shows up in the series that has his own series at this point. I think if I read more of his work it will be there that I start again.

Me too.
The Hobbit, Hmm. First time I read it I was forced to for a 'summer reading school work thing' when I was ~thirteen. I didnt want to, I had to. I loved it, I probably re-read it 2 more times before LoTR.
. . . I kept re-reading the same books and I thought the library was a place you hung out behind and smoked ciggys. I was such a punk, but a book-worm punk.
I think I got hooked on "series" books at about 18, someone gave me a bunch of Peirs Anthony, I forget which ones. Then I started to look for book that came in a series, I will pretty much read anything you give me. I just like story books.
