PW's First Attempt At Aeroponics & PS1000 LED

I remember in 1978 a buddy grew 2 colombian redbuds that hit 16" tall. To see them from a distance you would never guess what they were. Lol

I took the opportunity of the "long weekend" to drive 570 miles to visit my dad who is 87 years old ad still lives at the place I grew up, this afternoon I had a chance to do some digging into the boxes of stuff stored in the basement (my late mother was a borderline hoarder that never threw anything away!) I was looking for issues of High Times magazine's that I had purchased between 1975-82 hoping I would have something to bring back and relive the old times!

So far I have not found the mags, but I did find this;
Old pocket size booze bottles;

While the old bottles may be collectible, what is inside them is probably more interesting;

This was how I stored the seeds I grew way back then;

I think these are Colombian Gold, they just say Gold on the cap so they could be Acapulco or Jamaican seeds, they are a lot lighter color than the others, the bottle is from 1975;

I believe these are Maui Wowie from Hawaii which was a great smoke and was the most vigorous plant I ever grew;

And these are the famous Panama Red, real dark color seed and if I remember right was the hardest to get when available in my area;

The old Olympia beer tray was another great find...sorted many bags in that tray....still haven't found the High Times, have some more digging to do tonight before I face a day of windshield time tomorrow!

Now the big question? Do you think I would be able to sprout these after 40+ years?

Can I I follow that journal please . I can learn lots I know it lol

You mean feet ? Wtf! I would have probably came if I saw that.

I think they make cultures to help germinate old seeds.

A quick search on the net is recommending Gibberellic Acid, (GA3) as a way to "wake them up", also found a great thread right here titled Landrace Genetics 101 which is interesting...I was going to start my first journal with a homemade bubble cloner and clones from my current grow when I get back, I only have so much room to complete a grow so I have to plan accordingly!

Thanks for the comments everyone:thanks:!

Wow, those are some trees! The mere fact that the seeds didn't go poof is great sign. Maybe with a controlled indoor environment, you could give them all the TLC they need to be successful.

Like PW said, give it a go with a journal. You bet I would pull up a chair.

You can bet I am looking for photos of those trees...back then the Polaroid instant camera was used, no Blue light developing at the local Kmart!

I will start a journal, it will probably be the clone journal that I planned combined with my current finish and what further research/questions/answers provides on how to best proceed with these old seeds when I get back, I only have so much room, and I am just re-wetting my feet after a 35+ year of being out of the know!

One thing I have learned after all these years is to proceed with caution, never jump head first into anything unless you have a idea of the outcome! :smokin:

Wow, thats a pretty rare find. If you ever consider parting with a couple seeds of each strain to have someone else try their hand at germination I'd sure like to be on the list.

Best of luck with them, I'd like to follow your journal if you could try to let us know when its up.:thumb:

Indoors is a brand new ballgame for me, ive grown outdoors for years but its gotten way too risky these days.

So you know what I think I am talking about!:cheesygrinsmiley:

My biggest question is how would these old strains that were grown forever outdoors adapt to indoor soil/coco/hydro?

These seeds were probably a genetic 9 month grow season, now with all the advances and genetic engineering, the seeds we buy will harvest in 4-5 months, would they adapt if sprouted to current conditions, or would I have to adapt to them and rethink what I am just getting used to?:thedoubletake:

I would guess a little of both sides would apply.

That was what I was thinking, but if i was lucky enough to sprout a few of these, I would have to rethink everything, the first success would not be for smoke or benefit, but to let them reproduce more seeds, keep a old strain alive and pure, (but who knows how pure they were back then when I sorted them out of that 1/4, 1/2, or 1 oz that the seller sold me!)

I promise to let all of you in on this adventure, its just not something I want to start half cocked with out doing some research, I probably should have done this before I intruded on Penny's great journal, but having read almost half so far (that's a lot of pages)I knew that there are a good number of old growers following and maybe someone had a similar experience!
Thanks again!:thanks:

Yo brother. My bet would be to go ahead and pop between 10-15 beans. Not sure if they are reg beans or not and then grow from there, a little bit wider selection you could have by seeing which plants carry the strongest genes. I know Feral just made a little bubbler he used to crack some beans, pretty sure for your older beans the old paper towel won't always do, perhaps it will but I would try and go for 100% germ rate. We can all agree that your journal would be well worth a follow :passitleft:

Back then they were all regular beans...Fem and auto were unheard of....The true definition of "bag seed":rofl:

Heya PW
Just dropping by to check things out in your GR. We have no clue of the ins and outs of hydros but your ladies look devin:) we are searching for a good yielder that drips the good stuff, we grow for a group up here and would love to up our take from our harvest so we can give out more meds to our gang.

Gonna be back building our flower girls tomorrow and see what happens, we have tried before but we're pretty new to the grow your own club as you know but, any tips or suggestions on beans would e so awesome brotha. Much love from us both!

Blessed Buds our friend and be well :passitleft:

Wow come along so quick. Kathy is a nice looking plant. But all great. Your PC is maturing quicker than mine. But it's healthier too. Hope it's got the great smell. .

Hey OTM
I'm really glad your Mum was a bit of a hoarder (I'm one too) cos those seeds are so precious! I'm an old outdoor grower also, & I'd so love to see you grow some.. I'll be looking forward to THAT journal!! Respect.
