I don't soak at all.
I drop them into a Rapid Rooter, and keep it moist. It's next to impossible to drown a seed in one- its like a sponge that only holds so much moisture. I've lost very few seeds since switching to this method- and those (that were lost) were some fairly old seeds that were somewhat questionable.

Yeah, depending on your next step, the soaking probably isn't even necessary as you say. In nature they don't get soaked but rather sit in a moist, warmish environment to trigger the cracking. Your Rapid Rooters sound like the perfect set-up.

I soak to be extra sure they absorb enough water, but like you say, probably overkill.

You and those dam rapid rooters.
I just drove over 2 hrs round trip to the hydro store.
I forgot coco and rapid rooters, fek.

Hey Azi :ciao: hope your having a nice day.
I read that if they sit in water for more than 18 hours there is a possibility of drowning them.
Possibility??
I soak 18 hrs exactly  then damp paper towel.
I put a wood shish kebab skewer above so the paper towel has an air gap.
I found air just as important
And warm too.
Cool temps slow the process right down.

Hey Rex are you swimming or skating today? Hehe

Stay safe

Could be. I've let them go three or more days and still been ok, but the whole point is to get them to absorb moisture which they do enough of in the first day or so to satify that trigger.

Some people push them down into the water thinking that only the viable ones sink so they can sort out the floaters. I never do that as I haven't found any correlation to sinking and sprouting. I prefer that they don't sink and, if they do, I pour out some of the water to make sure they are close to air.

For older, really dry seeds, sometimes scarifying them can help the inner seed coat get at the water needed.

I used cotton pads sprayed with a spray bottle then in a zip lock bag with a little gap left open then into cardboard box and in with the boiler worked a treat after 3 days they had an inch tail on them

Great idea I might try that. :thumb:
My last grow I soaked five seeds in distilled water, ~ 36hrs later all five had popped !

Don't miss the wet paper towel method...

Just saying ;)

Cheers
Hey Chuck :ciao: is distilled water that much better?

I can snap the leaves off a baby no problem trying to pull off a helmet.
I have the worst luck with those things.
I'm all thumbs.
