Prof's Lab: Diary Of A Bedroom Farmer

I personally don't understand why anyone would buy unfeminized seeds. They're so expensive. Wouldn't you prefer a sure thing when planting rather than a 50% chance?

I know that unfeminized seeds can be less expensive but if they're boys and you're not planning on pollinating anything, what's the point?

I agree with you on the Chocalatina being a boy.
I think there are several reasons why people still get regular seeds. Firstly, like you said, there is breeding. Then there are those who believe that feminisation is tainting genetics. Another reason is that many of the top breeders don't feminise their seeds like Bodhi's or Exotic Genetix for example. Then there are those who just like doing things the old fashioned way. Personally I haven't actually had too much experience with regs but the ones I have purchased have been exclusively regular strains which I have liked the sound of. These recent ones were a gift from another grower so I didn't actually buy them. One thing about them though is that every one is a winner. Well, that is when they turn out to be female.
Boy. And boy the way, nice strain reviews for a change. :cheesygrinsmiley:

I'm digging the little foxtails on that PE2!
Lol. Why thank you, kind sir.

It certainly looks like a dude. I have the original Big Bomb to compensate but I would have mos def preferred some more Chocolatina crosses.

What a great time for me to jump back in, getting to read 2 of your always great strain reviews nicely done Prof!!

Ps.. Really like it when you pull out your root lol.

What a great time for me to jump back in
Lol. Right at the very end! Don't worry as you didn't miss much. The next journal will be much better.

Ps.. Really like it when you pull out your root lol.
I'm starting to worry about you lot....be right back!

Root Update.

We have some roots! Now don't laugh as this is serious. All 4 of the Big Bomb clones have some roots sticking out now. If I were growing in soil or coco then I would feel happy enough to transplant right now but as it is clay pebbles, I'm going to hold off. I will do the largest 2 tomorrow evening and then the final 2 either the following day or the day after that.
The clones look beat up but survived. It was too cold for them really. I checked the water which they were being rooted in and it was only 9c and that was in the day at lights on. I think it must have been colder throughout the night which leads me to conclude that this Big Bomb must be pretty tough and easy to clone. I think it'll be much quicker under optimal conditions.
So it looks as if we will be seeing Wilma at full capacity after all. Nothing worse than when you lose a clone and create a gap. It would have been my fault for not taking more cuttings though....

Now for the moment a couple of you have been waiting for. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you. Prof's roots!....

I don't even have to take them out of the jar. I discovered that I can take these Jurassic Park, roots in amber looking pics....

Dark Devil Update.

I'm not sure what happend but she woke up a little. There has been some good growth over the last week and it doesn't look to be setting in for flower just yet. I can see pistils erupting all over her but the growth tips look like they will stretch a little more.
I took @Virgin Ground's advice and bumped the nutrients up and also performed a topping which I thought was a seriously bad idea just after doing it. So far it is doing better than I thought it would only last week. I still think it'll be a teeny victory though and will probably just hit an ounce....

Lmao, nice Jurassic roots Prof! That DDA looks good to me! I remember being worried at how small mine ws when pistils started, but she stretched a good amount. I think your dda’s got some good potential there!

If you get an ounce from your DDA, you'll get 20 more grams than I did with mine. :battingeyelashes:

How long did yours go in the end?

I've done much worse before. Last year I grew 10 strains in one pot and a few of those were tiny. Gorilla Zkittles gave me a gram if I remember correctly lol.
Nice growth, root and DDA! Winners all 'round. :thumb:
I thought you'd be pleased.

My replacement Big Bomb is catching up with the Bubba's Breath in the veg tent. I am willing to bet that it will catch up after the flowering stretch....

Sativa Dream Strain Review.

The Sativa Dream is a hybrid from Kannabia which offers sativa effects on top of easy indica growth. Did they achieve the desired result? Kind of. Here's why.

Growth.

It did feel a bit like an indica when growing though I would say that it feels more like a classic hybrid to me. It is somewhere in the middle of being short/heavy and taller and more spaced out.
The growth was very good though and the plant didn't hang around once it had gotten past the seedling stage. The flowers set themselves on each branch like an indica would and they became very heavy come harvest. On the downside, they were affected by mould later in the grow which was caught before too much damage had been done though she did loose her largest and most dense flower. Seems not all indica traits are favourable and suseptibility to mould is one you don't really want.
Overall the growth was a little messy and I remarked a couple of times on her rough appearance throughout the grow. I thought she was a little ugly though looks certainly aren't everything. The plant was still easy to grow and didn't have any real problems when growing.

Smell and Taste.

Throughout the flowering stage the scent was typical of your everyday fruity strain. It was a little citrusy but other than that, not too much to shout about. After harvest and a bit of time in the jar, the smell became a bit more interesting. The fruit mixed with floral to create something quite nice though certainly not unique. It was very nice though and would appeal to most I think.
The flavour was also fruity though a bit more sharp than the scent. If I were to call the scent an orange citrus then the flavour would be more like a lemon citrus but not as pronounced as some lemon strains.
Personally I like strains which are a little more interesting though this one is actually quite good. I just think that it is a little too safe for my liking.

Effects.

The effects are pretty good. This strain is sold on its sativa effects and I think that they have done a reasonably good job. The buzz is happy and thoughtful and also gives a good jolt of energy. Sounds like a sativa. The thing I found though is that it doesn't last long enough. After an hour I was running out of steam and felt like I could have been using my normal go-to indica meds.
The experience is pretty good one really and I actually liked the more mellow end to the effects.

Overall this is a nice strain but I would be hard pressed to buy it for its flavours or effects. My first problem is that it claims to have indica growth and sativa effects. Well, it wasn't a particularly fast or heavy yielding plant. The effects weren't sativa for very long and the flavour was kind of average. I'd go for a diesel instead and probably have sativa meds much more quickly. The yield and flavour would be more to my liking as well.
It's not a bad strain and it will definitely be enjoyed by many but it's a bit mild for me personally. But hey, don't let that put you off trying it out for yourselves. It could be just what you are looking for.....

Chocolatina Strain Review.

Final review of the thread coming up and I've saved the (personal) best until last.
The Chocolatina is a mixed hybrid from Exotic Genetix and is a cross of Mint Chocolate Chip and Tina. There has been a huge amount of crossings gone into making those two strains but what you get when they are combined is something special. I wouldn't say that this strain has it all but it in my books it is a real winner and here is why.

Growth.

This is probably the least impressive thing about this plant. The growth isn't bad or slow, just not in par with some of the more vigorous strains out there. I grew this as one of four different hybrids and it was the smallest, the slowest and the lowest yielding. The thing is that the other three strains were bred for bulk, speed and to some degree, effects. This strain is bred for turps and effects and it really shows.
Again I have to reiterate that it wasn't a bad growing plant. Not at all. Just don't grow it next to a Big Bud.
One thing I did notice is that this was the only plant which had weak and hollow stems. They were more like celery than the woody feel that the others had. It also had a mutation as it displayed some polyploid traits in one of the branches.
This plant was quite beautiful though and her flowers and leaves looked really nice throughout.
Appearance aside, it was also easy and grew well with nothing to worry about.

Smell and Flavour.

This is were we score the real points. Usually there is a couple time in a year where I am absolutely blown away by a strain and this is one of this year's contenders. The smell from day dot was good. It was always one step ahead of the rest and would bring a smile each time i had the chance to smell it. Which was about 24 times a day. It was a perfect blend of chocolate and fuel. I have only ever had the pleasure of having a chocolate scented strain a few times so this was a nice surprise for me. The chem/fuel side of things isn't overpowering or dominant in any way either. It is like you can choose which flavour you want to taste with each toke. Fuel or chocolate? It really is something special and memorable.
Like I just hinted at, the scent is in the flavour. It is thick and creamy and doesn't taste like smoking at all. It is a flavour powerhouse but at the same time not aggresive like a cheese or diesel might be.

Effects.

The effects for this one are a generally balanced experience though it is very strong. I would say that it could be good for socialising but I've not actually had the chance to do that yet, what with the pandemic and all. It has a kind of relaxed alertness which faded to a more typical stone after a while. It seems to be pretty functional when used during the day but has a dreamy psychedelic quality which can catch you off guard. At night this strain is also good as it won't hold you back from relaxing and falling asleep if you wanted to.

Overall I really like this one. You won't be getting Critical yields but what it lacks in size is made up for in overall quality. This is some beautiful and effective medicine which I can highly recommend....

2 more great strain reviews Prof! The Chocolatina sure sounds like a very nice strain she has some very pretty flowers. I’ve never tried any stains with any chocolate flavours but it sounds delicious!! Love all the variety of strains you grow and with your detailed strain reviews I feel like a grew it myself!!

Thanks N! And those were the final two reviews for this thread. The next journal will be underway shortly so hopefully there will be plenty more reviews in that one. There will definitely be some more Chocolatina crosses.

Hey 420. I will be shutting this thread down and will be beginning a new one on this coming Monday. I thought about taking these last 2 plants with me but decided not to. So I will continue to drop a little weekly update on the Highland and the Dark Devil until they have finished up. I didn't want to just take everything to the next journal as I would like the next one to be a fresh start.
So time for a little update.
Here is the Highland Laos at around week eight. I don't think we have a fast(er) flowering pheno after all....

One the plus side, it is still not dead.

The Dark Devil is still doing well and is making flowers now. I nearly lost a branch after a super-cropping accident but it held out. You can see which one it is as it has gone darker than the rest. It looks a little weak but is still growing....

Here is a sneak peek at the plants for the next round. This tent should be pretty good and hopefully full. The Bubba's Breath is growing incredibly compact. There are many growth tips hiding behind those drooping leaves. I'm really excited to see what will happen when it's flowered.
The Big Bomb has done a good job of catching up over the last week. It also has a lot of growth tips but is growing very differently.
Less than a week before we drop them into flower....

Bubba's Breath...

Big Bomb....

I'll make sure I get in early on the next journal. Ha ha. Ladies looking promising so far.
Cheers Vet. I'll tag you when I drop it.

There is the Wilma grow also which I will put into flower on the following Monday. This was originally meant to be more Big Bombs but one of the clones wasn't to my liking so I decided to spice things up a little. Instead we will be running these four....

Northern Lights X Skunk....

Melon Gum....

Orange Cane....

Rainbow Cake....

I also have these two to add to my veg space. These are Double D's which was my favourite strain from last year. They are regs and in a perfect world I would like to get a male and a female to make seeds with. We will have to wait and see with these before we can decide what to do with them....

The next journal will be underway shortly
Looking forward to it Prof your journals never disappoint.

Bubbas Breath is one stout lady with a ton of branching, I bet she is gonna be an impressive plant once she starts her flowering stretch!
