Prof's Lab: Diary Of A Bedroom Farmer

Hey 420. I thought I'd best do an update on the little outdoor project. I wouldn't blame you if you had forgotten about the auto I have growing outdoors in the little pot. I began growing it back in Victorian times and it is still doing its thing lol. It is actually on day 81 but it looks like it should be on day 40 to me. It is still alive though it is almost lime green and has taken a real beating in its lifetime. I have only brought it indoors during a couple severe storms but for the most part it has been outside in all weather. There has been a good frost and torrential rain but still it goes on. For those not in the know, I have been feeding it homemade fertiliser consisting of selected kitchen waste, weeds (including weed), compost and many other delightful things like animal waste and corpse's all stewed in a big barrel of water which is sat in the sun. It is as fun as it sound lol. It is probably why the plant looks the way it does. There is one leaf which has turned completely yellow but it doesnt actually look all that bad considering. On the plus side there are no pests, no mould, no nana's and it has cost me absolutely nothing other than a litre of water every now and then. It smells very nice now and has a scent which reminds me of Blueberry strains. Here is the Auto Purple Gorilla. How are you still alive?....

I'm so here for this, Prof!!!!!

Did you ever read George's Marvellous Medicine? :laughtwo:

Was this plant ever indoors, or was she outdoors the whole time?

Yea don’t look bad for what it’s been through.
It is a tough little thing. I woke up one morning and there were 40mph winds and torrential sideways rain and I thought that it was going to get torn from the pot. It was being pinned against the side of the pot and I thought that it was a goner.
But nope, It just carries on albeit at a snails pace. It hasn't seen any sun for a few days now and has just been sat in the rain. I guess we're entering botrytis territory about now.

Lol. I'm not going to have a sip to see if it is magic. I think my eyes would probably dissolve. It seems to be working well for some of my other plants. Here are some tomatoes being fed with the soup....

They don't look too bad considering how exposed they are. They have been through the storms and poor weather as well. Here is my sunflower. It is slowly dying from a soil-born fungus infection but it has done well being fed only the brew....

That auto has been outside for most of the time. I started it indoors and kept it in for a few days or so. I was worried about a slug coming along and eating it in one go. That never happened to the auto which was outside but it did happen to one of my seedling I started indoors on my windowsill lol.

Hey 420. The seed fairy has been to my house again. You all have to thank @Lewydeville for this. What we have here are some homemade crosses created by Lew which he documented over in his thread.

You should check it out. He makes it look easy and it was what gave me the nudge to have a go and make some for myself. I had always liked the idea but had always thought it to be a tricky and time consuming process, Lewy demonstrated that it is quite straightforward and made it feel exciting.

These are some good looking seeds. There's not one small or odd looking one in the bunch.....

The strains used for the crosses are....

Crumbled Lime from Karma Squad
Cheap trick from Exotic Genetix
Wedding Cake from Pheno Finders
Chocolatina from Exotic Genetix
Guicy Banger from Exotic Genetix

There's a lot to get stuck into there lol. We will be working our way through them over the next year and it's going to be fun seeing what we get.

Thanks Lew

Hey 420. Quick-fire update time.

These are doing well. This is where the malana's and the fems are now. These are yesterdays pics....

And here they are today....

2 of the Afghan landrace's have popped up....

Then there's these....
DSC02789.JPG

The Crumbled Lime is back to normal. The leaves are all 5 fingered and there is no new weird growth. I cleaned her up by surgically removing all of the weird lower stuff. You'd never know that she was re-vegged now....

DSC02794.JPG

The Miami Heat will need repotting soon. I'm fairly certain that it is a male so we will trim it up, re-pot it and put it to one side for now....
DSC02792.JPG

The Balkh is a nice looking plant. I still can't tell what gender it but hopefully it wont be long....

More on the way....

The latest flowering plants are well on their way now. It shouldn't be much longer and I'm sure I could take the Fat Purple if I needed to. The FP has turned it up to 11 and has ridiculous levels of frost. I'm starting to worry about botrytis with her. The weather is a bit damp at the moment and humidity in the tent is at the higher end of what I'm comfortable with. It is around 66% at lights on. The other 3 are a couple weeks away. Tropicanna Banana is starting the turn finally and has pistils beginning to change colour. It is coming to the end of yet another round of lovely plants. Here we are today....

Here are the close-ups.

Hashplant D....

This plant is one stinky lady and has a decent Chem influence. It is super sleepy stuff and one of my favourite evening smokes....

Fat Purple....

The bling of the grow. This thing has ruby red and purple flowers that stand out from a mile. This is always the first plant that the eye's are drawn to when the tent is opened....

DSC02826.JPG

Tropicanna Banana....

The monster of the grow. It would have been great to see her grown out on her own. She is nice and frosty and is going to be the fruity tasting smoke from this round....

DSC02828.JPG

Critical Jack....

Not what I was expecting as it was vegging like a beast. It turned out quite easy to tame in the end. The flowers smell great though and are very dense....

I chopped off a tiny lower from the Fat Purple to get a better pick in the day light. It smells exactly like I remember it from before but the flowers are much tighter and have more frost. There is a definite difference between the 2 different growing methods. Last time it was in a dripper system with clay pebbles as the medium and this time it is bottom fed coco coir. The lighting was also different. Last time we ran a 600W HPS and this time it was a 200W 4000K LED. The flowers are much better than the last time around though the plant last time wins on general appearance. Last time the plant had waxy, dark green leaves that felt indestructible. This time the plant is nice but feels a bit weaker maybe. I'm not sure if that is the word I'm looking for but out of the 2 versions, I prefer the coco and LED grown plant....

That's a lot of goodness and beauty to take in! Incredible.

I've never seen anything like that Fat Purple!
Thank you syenite. The Fat Purple is a beautiful strain though is a little on the mild side for me. I consider it to be relaxing but functional enough to use throughout the day. The rest of the family think that it is quite strong though. It is up there in the top 5 most colourful strains I have grown.

I'm currently trying to hold off from pulling her from the grow as in my opinion she is done and the weather is terrible. it looks like the rain will be going away in the next couple of days so I 'm just hoping that she won't get hit with any mould.
I feel so high when I come in here looking at all the colors. Dazzling. Jumping back in here so if you made fun of me earlier you got away with it.
Good to hear from you again Mr S! I think you're in the clear. I can't remember mocking you in recent weeks but my memory is shot.

One thing you may have missed out on though is the new direction I'm taking the thread. We have a load of landrace genetics to check out and potentially keep and even use to breed with and make some unique crosses. I also have a load of seeds from Lewy which I think you are aware of. We will be working our way through those for a while.

You might have missed out on the damping off as well but that is in the past.

Where did you find the fat purple plant? Looks lovely.
I got it either last year or the year before as a freebie. It is from Hazeman and is a (Purple Rhino x G13) x Fat Marty (unknown strain). This was my first female regular seed after trying to grow regs for a while and getting male after male. I was starting to think it was a conspiracy lol.

Hey 420. I picked up some new pots today to try out....
DSC02866.JPG

I was originally going to use fabric pots for my mother and vegging plants but they were getting really dirty and even growing mould on them after a couple of weeks use. I decided to move to little plastic pots but have found just as many issues with them. Firstly the plant growth is noticeably better in the fabric pots. Much better in fact. It is no secret that fabric pots allow roots to breath better which in turn produces faster and more vigorous growth. The plastic pots are ok but I'm getting issues with what looks like overwatering. Another issue I am having is that the plants need re-potting much more often. Sometimes I'm only getting away with around 3 weeks before I need to re-pot them again. That might not sound too bad but when you have a lot of plants it comes around all too often.
So I needed to compromise and had a look online. I considered air pots but there's no way I'm paying for those. They are really expensive and to be honest they look like they could be a pain to clean. I thought about just getting fabric pots again and just looking after them better but that is a lot of work and I need a lot which makes them expensive. Then I stumbled upon these. What they are is pond plant baskets. They come in a range of sizes and are somewhere in between an air pot and a standard plastic pot. What they are is a net pot with a finer mesh as to stop soil from washing away when fully submerged. I think they will work beautifully with coco and bottom feeding as the roots won't circle like they are with the standard plastic pots which is causing me issues with wet feet. There shouldn't be a problem with getting air to the roots with these as they are more open than the air pots even. Provided the medium doesnt dry out too much I think that these will work wonders. The best thing about them is that they are dirt cheap. About the same as cheap plastic pots. I got 12 for £7 which is considerably cheaper than the fabric or the plastic air pots. Here are what they look like....
DSC02867.JPG
DSC02868.JPG

They are of an ok quality and should last if looked after. They won't break unless you decided you were going to sit on them or something stupid like that. The mesh is nice and fine and covers most of the pot....
DSC02869.JPG

Not sure of what those 2 circles are for though....
DSC02870.JPG

Not the most exiting update but I know what you growers are like. I will be putting some plants in them soon to see what they are like. Back shortly with some updates
:passitleft:

First up we have the little veg tent. Most of the plants in here are doing well. One which isn't is the Doz Z Doz. It is one of the plants to suffer with the wet feet I mentioned. I have flushed it with H2O2 as it has root rot. I have also removed it from the tray which the others are on to prevent the spread of the fungus. The other 2 fems which are the Pineapple Express #2 and the Romberry are doing good.
The Malana landrace plants are all doing well. They all look slightly different to the next with one looking like a true sativa and another looking like it could be a real indica. The rest fall somewhere in-between like a colour pallet. I'm actually pretty nervous about flowering these as they are apparently massive in their natural environment. We're talking 4+ meters tall lol. Finally we have the Afghan landraces. Only 3 out of 5 have popped so far and those 3 dont look in the best of health. It is completely my fault though as I didn't pre charge the coco and when they popped I waited a little too long before actually feeding them. They should recover in no time....

The Miami Heat is still in need of some TLC. I could try out the new pots with it. I say it as I'm still not 100% on whether it is a male or female yet....
DSC02885.JPG

The Balkh has been given a trim but I have left some branches to take as clones. This plant is starting to show gender now so we will play "guess the gender"....

So. What do you think the Balkh is?....
