Producing Feminized Seeds Using Colloidal Silver

Here are a couple pics of the seeds within a day (give or take) of four weeks from pollination.
You can see that a lot of seeds look great, and that a few look errr, not so great...
It is apparent that some seeds on a bud develop faster than others on the same bud, so to get all the seeds ripe, you just need to give it extra time. I don't think seeds can be over ripe? So no harm in waiting as long as you can.
None the less, there were very few seeds (maybe 5) that were too soft to even put aside.
This represents about 15% of the seeds I expect to get off those two little plants.

These are from the FI plant.

This is the Unknown strain (which was 2 weeks in veg behind the FI).
100_40022.JPG

And that is rice I have in the advil bottles to help keep things dry.

This weekend I think I will be taking the plants down. I have a few clones flowering that are getting a little cramped, and could really use the space and light now.

That will put me at 5 weeks from pollination to seed for the FI strain and it's similar unknown friend.

My Diesel has a number of unopened pollen sacks, a slew of odd mutated yellow things and should be finished in a couple of weeks at most. As soon as the sacks seem mature I am going to remove them and put them in a film container with some rice to dry. I think the 5th of January was the last time I sprayed CS on her so this is 19 days later but seems a lot longer.

All plants carry more than one genotype...selfing a plant could result in different phenos and using two plants obviously would have diff phenos...since the plant that is getting selfed was bred from two plants it carry both genotypes and down the road they can show through natural selection but over time they can be bred out entirely through human selection and instead of being recessive traits they would be gone...

Wisdom right thurr.

Wow - You've all been busy!!!

So have I... Had staff call in Sat and Mon, was ok cuz I had lot's to catch up on there too with new product inventory needing to be entered, marked, and put on shelves, etc... was so glad my girls were caught up so I didn't have them on my mind! Still have much to do with W-2s, 1099s, 1096's, quarterlies, end of the year crap... egads 4 businesses are sometimes too much for me.

:thanks: ALL for keeping up with questions here! This is SUCH a wonderful place!!! YOU are my 420 FAMILY.

:Love:NotaDrinker:Love:

Hi Honey! It would be wonderful to meet up with ya at Sturgis!! That is... IF we ever get to go again! Didn't miss for a long time, but the last 2 years have only gotten ONE weekend trip in per year for vacation - that has GOT to change!

Hey - where did your purple seed pic go??? I went to look at it today and it wasn't in my journal anymore? I wanted to see what color the seeds were as they cracked. I'll be putting in an update of mine cracking with seeds later today!

:Love:MrSmith:Love:
:welcome: Honey! And :thanks:! I am so glad you found info AND LAUGHS!!! You are too kind with your comments... :thanks:

:Love:Norcali:Love:

That does sound like an awesome strain - done in 28 days. The only thing I wonder is, how much do you yield with that fast of a turn time? It seems the faster they finish, the less they yield... but if the smoke is killer, I guess we just grow more of em!!!

So WONDERFUL to see you!!!!!

:Love:Doc:Love:

Not going to be able to self that one... If you only sprayed 8 times, I am wondering if the plant has any hermie parts (buds AND sacs?)... if yes, you could maybe separate that plant and let it pollinate itself. I'm doing an update on the Widow Ryder today - and it has now selfed itself in the middle part of the plant that has both buds and sacs going.

Yes - I am absolutely finding that it takes quite some time to produce viable pollen on some of the strains. The good thing is, pollen can be frozen and used later! Anyone in a big hurry is gonna have a wait, eh??? LIKE ME!!! LOL

:Love:Cona:Love:

Hi Honey!

IMO (take it for whatever that's worth!) Selfing is using ONE plant to both produce the pollen AND grow the seed. This can be done on one plant as I did with the Himalaya Blue Diesel by turning the bottom and pollinating the top. OR, it can be done by using two plants CLONED FROM THE SAME MOTHER because these two plants actually have the same genetics. To me, this gives me the best shot at having a plant like the one seeded...

However, I am not sure that selfing will produce only plants exactly like the plant that produced them either??? If a plant has Xx for it's pheno and combines with itself, all offspring should have XXxx given to them. Does this mean some show XX pheno, some xx pheno, and some Xx pheno??? There is a LOT more to genetics than what appears on the surface!!!

Anyone KNOW??? I'd sure be interested in a very basic (for ME) answer!!

Good questions, Cona... still think Twelve12 would know... if ever this grow gets done (spring), I hope to get in there and really learn a bit more... but for now, I'm keeping it simple in me lil pea brain!!!

Back after catching up on more conversation in the journal... Cona, honey, don't you worry about chit chatin' (I sure don't think of this as hijacking!!!)... I now have on next year's list... powerplant.. blackjack... ice :thanks:!!! And chocolope has been on the list for sometime - but it's always sold out when I've been buyin!

:Love:1234a5678b:Love:

:welcome: Honey! And... :thanks:!! I agree, a lot of breeders use different parents (two separate plants), which creates a whole ton of genetic unknowns! More than what I will be able to figure out!!!

Hey Sweetie!

:thanks: I think you answered My question too! But I'm leavin' it in anyway - just cuz it's written!!! LOL

:welcome: Honey!!!! Yer Welcome and :thanks: for your wonderful comments!

Okay, I'm to the last page, so starting a new one here!!!

Hi again, honey!!!

Some of my strains have taken much longer than others to produce viable pollen after stopping CS treatment. I quit spraying some before the last week of Nov, but they didn't produce viable pollen sacs until mid-Jan (Widow Ryder - 8 weeks). Make sure the sacs are browning (not yellow) before taking them, and they should fall off super easy (you shouldn't have to tug at all). I wouldn't want you to go thru all this and take them too soon - like I did my first plant (yellow does not mean viable - EEK!)!!!

If you are going to freeze it and possibly will be using it on more than one plant in the future, I would suggest using multiple containers to freeze it in. Once removed from the freezer, pollen dies very quickly. This would allow you to remove one container to use without disturbing the remainder of the pollen.

The wait is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! It seems like I started this a LONG time ago and I'm still waiting for seeds! LOL :high-five:

LOVE SEEIN' SEEDS!!!!! FI IS FI!!!!!!

:cheertwo::bravo::welldone::goodjob::thumb::partyboy::slide:

That looks BEAUTIFUL!!!

Like you said, a bit longer would maybe finish up a few more - but you have lots looking real good there! Isn't it pretty normal to have some less ready? And don't some of them end up viable even if different colored? I've popped seeds that didn't have the greatest color, but still popped for me.

LOOKIN' GREAT!!!

TO HAVE PURPLE SEEDS - AND...

FEMALE SEEDS!!!

FI!!!!!

UPDATE: AUTO WIDOW RYDER...

Beginning Oct 27th, this plant was treated entirely for about 8 days, then only the bottom was treated for the remainder of about a month of CS treatment.

The bottom turned totally - not a bud left in sight.
The middle section is a mix of buds and sacs.
The top grew more after stopping spraying and has no sacs I can see (may be deeper in bud).

This lady has taken some time to be ready! In the mean time, the other plant I was going to mate has already been harvested.

Here is a recent past pic of her...
01-09-2012_AutoWidowRyder_MixedPlant.jpg

As you can see, the bud on the top of her has progressed wonderfully. When the sacs at the bottom take forever to ripen the pollen - it leaves one wondering if it will be too late!!!

On Jan 12th, I removed a number of browned sacs and put them in a container to dry for 2-3 days. At this time, I removed 3 branches of sacs from the bottom to finish ripening in a bit of water. The sacs were cracking, some had browned and been removed. Here is what they looked like on Jan 12th...
01-12-2012_AutoWidowRyder_BottomSacsInWater.jpg

And here is a closer pic of what they looked like when I did this...
01-12-2012_AutoWidowRyder_BottomSacsCloser.jpg

I thought maybe it would speed the pollen ripening process up a bit if I did this... and wanted to try this (had read about it) anyway... and had the perfect plant to use.

This is what she looked like on with the sacs cut off her bottom...

FOUR DAYS LATER on Jan 16th... here are the branches I removed...
01-16-2012_AutoWidowRyder_BottomSacsInWater.jpg

And closer to see the changes...
01-16-2012_AutoWidowRyder_BottomSacsCloser.jpg

I then got out a new bag and simply held the branches upside down and shook them so that any loose pollen sacs would fall into the bag...
01-16-2012_AutoWidowRyder_ShookOffSacs.jpg

And then I placed them in a container to dry for 2-3 days...
01-16-2012_AutoWidowRyder_SacsToDry_Closer.jpg

On the 18th, I used the dried pollen on the top. This was the second pollination I did on the top. Here was the top on that day...
01-18-2012_AutoWidowRyder_TopPollinated.jpg

I think the pollination from a few days before may have taken, but I;m not worried about it on this plant because of...

what the middle part of this plant is doing... self-pollinating...

Many places you can see the sacs that may have done the pollination...
01-18-2012_AutoWidowRyder_MidSacsHerming1.jpg

And others, it's not as clear where the sac is, but it is clear the bud is pollinated...
01-18-2012_AutoWidowRyder_MidSacsHerming2.jpg

This lady has her own room now - but it isn't the nicest environment. I figure all she really needs is light and water, and if it's a bit cooler it may hurry her up to finish!

Watching the mid areas be pollinated (I saw this happening for a week before these pics) was also a real good indication that the pollen was becoming viable.

So... on plants/branches that are sprayed for less time and end up producing both buds and sacs... these areas should self-pollinate themselves. If you have an area to separate these plants to (so they don't pollinate your flowering ladies) - this could be the way to go for you.

MATARO BLUE: PICS & REVIEW...

This strain is SUPERB!!!

Buds grow thick on the plant and saturation is astounding. Stems are strong and thick, but the buds do grow so heavy that some support is needed at the end.

This plant grows fairly bushy. Outside, MB was SOOOO big and beautiful and grew to over 5 feet upward and 4 feet outward... but mine didn't get to finish well outside. Inside, I LST'd her to get a number of upper cola areas.

I had 2 MB plants. Both grew to about 27 inches tall. The MB grows a lot of fan leaves. I took many at 3 weeks into flower and more here and there after that to try to get more light inside this plant.

Here is one plant on harvest day...

And here she is with her biggest fan leaves removed...

And here is the other plant with her fan leaves removed...
01-11-2012_MataroBlue1_FanLeavesOff.jpg

I kept these going extra long to attempt to achieve the color changes this plant is noted for. In the next cola image, you can see the subtle lavender color that came out the last two extra weeks I let her grow...

And here is a bud...
01-11-2012_MataroBlue_Bud.jpg

And here are her trichs on harvest day - perfect for me cuz I love the couchlock buzz! I like lots of cloudy...
01-11-2012_MataroBlue_Trichs.jpg

Now... cleaning her was like no other plant I have ever cleaned. The smell was like I was sitting in a blueberry patch. It was SO WONDERFUL!!!

The smell is also a better strain for those who have smell issues. It gives off a wonderful fruity aroma that is not near as noticeable as some of the skunky strains.

The flavor with only a short cure on it - SUPERB. A wonderful hint of fruit.

The buzzzzzzz..... a wonderful buzz that allows me to function (not totally in zombie land), continues to creep for a deeper high, and lasts a long time. Very relaxing high.

And one of the best things - THE YIELD! I got 112g from one plant and 110g from the other when completely dry - buds snapped right off real easy. Buds have a density to them that gives you a nice ending yield.

All over - one of my favorites to date.

One more update and getting shorter on time, so I best hurry up!!!

PHENO DISCUSSION!!!

THE STORY OF THREE SISTERS...

Once upon a time there were three sisters. Although they had the same parents, two looked very much alike but one was very different....

Two were short, green, and had thicker buds...

Even when seeded, she looks a bit different. Instead of green seeds poking thru, she has reddish-purple...

01-19-2012_AutoBlueHimalaya_PurpleSeeds2.jpg

I got one out of three as a purple female. And I gave a few seeds of this strain (my first seeds - regular, not femmed) to a friend who also got one purple female out of three - but his is shorter and built more like the green ones shown above.

So evidently there is going to be a variety of purples in my seeds. Since I have hundreds of seeds I am now popping a ton of them specifically for finding purple girls ... and you can bet I will be CS treating each pheno type!!!

I planted some more a few days ago... and now that more sisters/brothers of these three are sprouting, Granny is beginning to wonder if the purple starts at the beginning??? Could this next pic be the beginning of another?
01-24-2012_AutoBlueHimalaya_PurpleSeedling.jpg

cuz it sure doesn't look like it's siblings...

01-24-2012_AutoBlueHimalaya_GreenSeedling.jpg

Phenos... Now a days with all the mixing of strains, I wonder how many phenos are in any strain. Kudos to breeders who provide stable seed strains because I would think this is real hard to do and would take a lot of time.

It's just a reminder that we can't expect to have the same stable strains in our seeds if we mix it up with breeding - even a mix of the same strain (as pictured above with the Auto Blue Himalaya). For me tho, I'm just tickled to have a purple variety pop up!!!

Last note... I doubt I will be back in until late next week. I have tons of bookwork to get done by the end of the month... and I have a few of my wonderful grand kids coming to stay this weekend!!! So everyone take care and keep the 420 home fires burning here!!! I'll catch up when I get back in!!!

I have decided to leave my CS treated plant in with the AKxSk females and let what may happen happen. How bad could AKxSKxDiesel femmed seeds be? Next Diesel cutting will be treated for at least 3 weeks on the bottom of the plant with CS. Mataro Blue is sneaking up on me too, going to google it!

Not "May" happen, but "Will" happen Dr.
Wow Granny, just beautiful. I think you mean these pics?

Love those reddish purple seeds you have there ;)
And very interesting silverish sprout you have there too ;)

I dunno who the idiot who decided to sell marijuana was, but he should have been selling feminized seeds instead! They are legal, easy to produce, you could make 1000's of them off one plant and could make 10's of thousands of dollars off of each plant selling seeds alone.
Yup, the seed banks are raking in the cash and charging way too much for seeds.
I really hope this opens up peoples eyes and we protest against the stupid high prices charged by seed banks for seeds. 10 FI seeds = $140 from VISC. With one of them, I made about 100 seeds, feminized, from a tiny tiny plant.

Best Wishes All.

Funny post! This is what I get posting while medicated. I seperated the CS'd plant, laying it on it's side in a window with the blind down and put typing paper under the CS treated parts and hid it from view with white cardboard. I will harvest the pollen and use it where I want it when the time comes. I find purple an interesting color on our plants but is there a real bonus other than bag appeal? And about autoflowering plants, what benefits over doing 12/12 from seed do these plants have? Years ago I kept breeding the first females to show with the first males to show for 6 generations of plants started from seed I collected in a coffee can and came up with a plant that would begin to flower as soon as it was put outside and would be finished in 50 days. I really liked this plant but alas it came to an end when i couldn't keep cuttings. Wish I had selfed it!

Question: once u pollinate a plant do u have to keep it forever isolated from other females? Also, when u do pollinate do u still have fans blowing circulating air? I assume so. If I grow a male and have her flower outside can I pull flowers and store for later use if so how long. I wouldn't mind doing some crossbreeding of my own and having a load of seeds to keep since seeds are expensive. Thanks. :Namaste:

If you carefully polinate with the fan off You won't get many unplanned seeds. You can store pollen in the refrigerator for at least 6 months but once you take it out and let it dry again before use you aren't going to be able to put it back in the refrigerator again for another use.

My CS'd plant is doing fine laying on it's side in low light. It is developing a lot more male looking flowers but has not really dropped any pollen yet on the typing paper. Patience Red. The three AKxSk that were started from seed and grown 12/12 with the Diesel are fattening up very nicely, just a few of their white hairs turning orange. Another patience issue, waiting for these to be ready for the pipe! I'm impressed with the size these plants have reached, around 24 inches tall and one pheno has a cola more than 3 inches thick and 9 inches long plus several side branches that will supply many pipe fulls.
