Phyto's At It Again

Couple inches of rain last night, 40 mph winds this AM, power is out again, no estimate for restoral. I'm cursed!!! Running the generator to power the sump pumps (and TV), trying to keep the cement foundation they poured 3 days ago for my new porch from flooding! Not enough generator to power the lights too. This sucks!

Power came back on about 2pm. Now I have to reset all my timers. Poor babies did not look happy.

Heh, didn't realize you're from the Central Valley. Storms up there, eh? Sorry to hear that. :-(

Reset timers? I did one grow in 2017 and was using mechanical timers. Same thing that hit you also happened to me but I didn't reset my timers right and I f'd up the light schedule. Very no bueno. When I started growing again in 2021, I went with Kasa smart strips and zero issues.

Yes, it can fail but it's only one point of failure. Going on four years, running strong.

Four lights (me and Piccard) in a 2' x 4'? Yup.

For some reason, me and electronic timers (non manual) never seem to get along. I remember when rain bird went from the old push pin irrigation timers to the electronic ones, never could get them set up. I’m a dinosaur, and I freely admit it!

One other update I forgot about, I took a good look at the sickly plant, it self topped, and I got three shoots, and one of those shoots self topped into two more shoots, pics tomorrow! It could turn into something in spite of me!

Dinosaur?! You're from California so you're supposed to be totally cool and high tech! ;-)

In used to work at a National Lab, it had some of the biggest computers in the world, and more high tech black project gadgets than you can imagine. (and I can’t tell you about) none of it rubbed off on me!

I hear they are going to use that big laser they have there at NIF to plink at the drones over New Jersey.

FYI, I'm a fan of Kasa too. All my lamps (home & garden) are now controlled over wi-fi.

Understood. You did enough high tech stuff at work so you left it at the office. 👍

They'd have to drag out the old "star wars" laser. A 12 gauge will take care of them drones! If you want to see what the laser bay looks like, watch the Star Trek Wrath of Khan remake, the engine room of the Enterprise was actually filmed in the NIF Laser Bay. Going back further part of "Tron" was filmed at the Lab, my father was Jeff Bridge's security escort during the filming.

I follow the progress of fusion & astronomy research at LLL. Folks like me find the NIF website wicked fascinating, so have seen many pics of that massive array of lasers.
Your dad had a very interesting job!

When I started there they had just decommissioned the old Shiva Laser and built the Nova Laser, which was the biggest in the world at the time. It took 9 trash can sized laser beams and through the use of turning mirrors, necked the beams down to one beam that shot at a target about the size of Lincoln’s foot as he’s seated on the Lincoln memorial on the back of a penny! It took a week to charge up the capacitors for a shot. When it fired, for that millisecond it used more power than the entire state of California in the same time period!!! When they were originally aligning the mirrors they made a small miscalculation, there was a big burn spot on one of the walls, luckily it didn’t have the outline of a person!!! NIF is incredible, you see about 4 stories of it, but there’s 10 stories underground!

Forgot to add picks of the struggling plant. It's starting to bouce back, but it's still small and 6 weeks old, but that's the beauty of photos, there's time to fix things.
In the first pic you can see that there are three stems coming out, self topped, and the second pic shows that one of the three shoots also self topped!

I bet those caps sound like a cannon when they all discharge at once. Its like a story out of a sci-fi novel but real and and right in the backyard, so to speak. Amazing science!

Never heard anything, but there was an entire basement full of 10 foot tall capacitors, they were behind a cyclone fence. I remember one of the veteran guys telling me NEVER go in there wearing anything metal and don't touch the fence! (I wouldn't go in ther period!) They had a nasty habit of discharging spontaeously without warning!
