Phantom’s Soil Ginger Punch Auto Grow Journal

I broke down an dropped two seeds this morning. Ever since getting these Ginger Punch Autos as freebies for paying in bitcoin, I’ve been dying to drop them. Here is the information on the strain directly from Kannabia’s website.

And of course photos of the ladies.

The wiped the glass with a 200 ppm bleach/water solution then rinsed with distilled water before filling with distilled water. The seeds went directly in the water after I left them sit out for a few minutes to warm up. Once they sink I’ll drop them in between a wet paper towel and wait for tails before planting directly into 5 gallon pots.

I currently have another grow ongoing in my tent under my leds using my rdwc system so I figured I would plant the girls directly into 5 gallon fabric pots with some simple well draining garden soil, feeding with Mega Crop once they’ve grown legs. This grow will done outdoors in my veggie garden under my shade canopy with misters to help with the intense summer sun and heat I will have throughout the grow. The garden has drip irrigation and the misters set on timers, I also use my rdwc wastewater to be more green and to give my garden an extra boost (not sure if the Gingers will get any of it since they will be fed MC directly). If I had the extra lights lying around I would put these ladies in their own tent since I have a few spare tents at the moment (gearing up for a fun fall) but I don’t. I guess this is all for now.

“You are going to get spoiled!”

I had a question in my other journal asking if I would be doing any training or topping with the Ranga Sisters (for any Aussies out there). The answer at this moment is that I intend on going with LST. Going wild and free doesn’t seem ideal with the heat and anything but LST seems too stressful for a plant that will already be heat stressed.

I potentially might mess around with STS and try to get a few buds to seed just for practice down the road. We are outdoors in case things get sideways and the seeds were free so why not.

Checked the Ranga Sisters this morning, both had sunk and cracked after 27 hours. I placed them in my germinating tray (mixing bowl lid) with a paper towel wetted with the same water they were bathing in. Folded the paper towel over them and covered with plastic wrap. I placed the tray in my laundry room that stays 83F all year due to it being connected to my garage with a poorly insulated door, a skylight, little to no hvac, and a short ceiling height. It’s also where I start my garden seedlings.

Stopped in at my local growers store to pick up a few back ordered items and grabbed (2) 7 gallon pots to put the ladies in. I filled them each 1/3 of the way with the Sunshine Mix, wetted it, filled another 1/3, wetted, and then filled the remainder of the pots to within a few inches of the rim with the rest of the Sunshine Mix but did not wet it. This will keep the top dry for the next day or so when I have to transplant my germinated seeds, allowing me to accurately water them without drowning them. Watering the first 2/3 helps get that moisture in there and allows the taproot to search for the moisture and find it right around the middle of the pot. Leaving the soil a few inches below the top allows me room down the road to add pinewood shavings to help keep in moisture and nasty bugs out.

I just got the little ladies in the ground. First I prepared the soil/media around where I would be planting with some rooting hormone, then made a 2-inch deep hole with a pencil. I added 2ml of room temperature distilled water to the bottom of each hole. I pre-sanitized my tweezers with a rubbing alcohol pad, air died, and then used them to place each seed, tail down, in their respective holes. Using the pencil I placed dirt around and over the seed, gently compacting the soil approximately 1/4-inch, ever so slightly. I then marked the location of each seed in the soil and gave each seed location 5ml of water. Lastly, I placed tags for each plant with #1 being the seed that had the longer taproot at the time of planting. I also put some marks on the side of each tag at 1/2-inch increments as a height reference.

Anyways here are photos of the process.

Thanks 013. From what I gathered is it is more of hydro than soil but does hold moisture more than coco does. Good news for me not having to worry about anything nutrient-wise in the soil for my Mega Crop dosing. I did hear about the peat moss having some pH swings after it starts to breakdown. I do like the fact it holds moisture more since these girls will be going outside to 100+ weather in the next week once they get a head start inside under the QBs.

I do have the cal/mag they sell along with the PK booster. I do have the newest version from just a week or two ago, it’s supposed to contain more of both of those supplements to make it more of a single nutrient product. I bought the supplements just in case things really get out of wack but for my grows I think I will try to keep with just the MC. My water is fairly hard where I’m at even after my softener as well.

Took a few pics of the girls, I still have them under my QBs on 20/4 light right now to set the pace. This weekend I’m finishing up my garden shade canopy for my veggies and where these two girls will live this summer. Right now we’re at Day 5 after breaking ground. My watering for the last 2 days has been 10ml each at lights on and 5ml at lights off. The Sunshine #4 definitely holds moisture longer than I thought it would which will be great for the outdoors; today was a “cool” day at about 97F. I actually left my misters off today and the veggies didn’t even wilt. The soil is damp an inch or two below the surface but the 7 gallon pots only feel like they weigh a few pounds (remember I did dampen the bottom 2/3rds of soil before planting). I’m holding off on watering today to bring that dampness level in the soil a few more inches lower. Tomorrow I’ll resume my normal 10/5ml watering and will probably use water from my cloner that is slightly dosed with MC. One thing I didn’t mention about my watering when I first planted the seeds, was that with each watering I watered in a circle, making it larger and larger each time, basically increasing the surface area that was damp (minus the first watering after planting which was directly over where I had planted the seed). Each watering, the circle maybe increased 1/4 to 1/2-inch and now the “watering circle” is 3-inches in diameter. You can’t really see it in the photos because I was poking my finger around feeling for moisture aka aerating in my books.

Took the girls out for some sunshine tonight and start acclimating them to the heat, you know what they say about gingers and the sun. I noticed a bit of leaf curl but I think it’s from the LEDs I’ve been pushing them under, I’ll keep monitoring it for any progression. I did notice that one seedling has a lime green stalk and leaf coloration where the other has a darker green and reddish stalk, probably just some early development stuff but it would be curious to get two different phenotypes. I’ll probably start following Emilya’s guide to watering autos in large pots here, The Proper Way To Water A Seedling In A Large, Final, Container

Anyways here’s some photos, getting close to their first true set of leaves.
