Pete Detroit's 2nd Grow, Blackberry Kush Photoperiod In Soil, Also 3 High Sativa Autos

Midweek Update. Nikki and Dawn seem to be growing VERY slowly, by comparison to other sprouts - possibly later sun, possibly no DynoMyco in the plug. Intent to correct both, moved 'em down to the Grow Zone, to share in the long photons... to which point, both Kooshie and Cookie were looking "odd" Kooshie twisting up, and looking like a head of Romaine. Cookie getting all stretchy and a bit twisty.. I'm hoping it's just lighting... upgraded them this evening from a 1 ft square 100W Viviosun (yes, I know it was a 'starter' light when i bought it) to a 300w (dimmable) Mars Hydro TLS 2000. Larger footprint, higher Watts (running ~ 1/2 power, or nominally 150w) hopefully will take care of the existing ladies, as well as the babies (who also got a pinch of DynoMyco) ... will see in a few days what happens. Unfortunately, while dinking around with the lights, I knocked the plastic measuring cups off the hanger bar, and right on to Kooshie's head, nearly snapping one of the upper shoots... SOOOOooo, cut a toothpick in half to act as a splint, some electrical tape to hold it all together... We'll see if it reattaches, or becomes butter fodder...
Here's the Pix!

Nothing REAL exciting to report - switching the light SEEMS to have cured the weird looking leaves - although there was a sudden dramatic yellowing on the tips of new growth - with some interweb assist I diagnosed "light burn" and dimmed it a bit and raised it. Kooshie's side branch was actually higher than the center shaft! Time for some LST!! Fortunately, got her bowed down w/ breaking anything - that center shaft is nearly as thick as my finger!
Cookie seems to be a bit confused as to what happened to her shoot (topped) but she'll get over - better light seems to have cured HER 'weird leaves' as well. Decided yesterday that Boo looked about big enough to transition to SIP, I filled her tank, will see if she can reach it, or if she needs one more top water.
The babies are fine, they're just slower than others have been

Looking good Pete!

There are many smart users here willing to help if you have problems. You can post a question here and will get advice back pretty quickly. Your grow setup is kinda unique but others here are doing the sippy thing so you're not alone. I"m still wrapping my head around it.

Thanks, Bud! I'll keep that in mind. Been keeping a close eye on her, as the seed house noted she liked a lot of Mg, and was showing early signs of deficiency - so I added some Epsom to the water, and looking good. Then the tips of the top leaves got all yellow, looked like classic light burn, according to the help forum I found. Yeah, prolly shoulda looked here, first - Heh!

I think she's found the water, part 2...
Ok, this is CRAZY.. Decided Boo was big enough to flip to SIP, has not hd top water since Fri. Just like Kooshie, she seems to be 50 - 100% bigger since Sun.. Thought she looked bigger, took a pic and compared.. yep. Sun, leaves were barely reaching the rim, today they're overhanging it. Just like Kooshie exploded. Don't know what's UP w/ these SIP pots, but I LIKE it!!! The blue funnel feeding the SIP is nominally 5" across!

Great to have you over there. Lots of ideas being swapped around that can only help us all get a little bit better. For such a simple and effective pot design there really is some magic to them.
Every plant I've ever grown with these things has been miles better than my others, and not just canna plants. My outdoor veggie garden and my indoor houseplants are all getting converted.

Over in that thread I describe how I build these things in smaller containers like Solo cups and 1L takeout containers, so everyone can experiment with some plant they're already growing. Hell, I've even got an aloe plant that loves the set-up.

Ok, Sunday check - in... Boo got her first topping, re-topped Kooshie, all her 4th nodes (6 or 7 of them, not all, as some were still on Node #3, Note how big her freaking branches are, look like fookin' pencils! Also trimmed out much of the fan leaves that were shading other growth. Cookie got tied down a little more (Yeah, she looks like she's staked to an ant hill) and moved away from Kooshie, the little light thief, who now has the whole end zone to herself. Nikki and Dawn seem to be slow, but they've only been in the dirt a week, and are prolly still working on getting roots out of the peat plugs. When they do, they're going to hit the DynoMyco, and then it should be off to the races! Also took a closer look at Cookie - had neglected to bore air holes in the sides of the bucket. Corrected that. Dirt seemed VERY moist at the top, water probe agreed. So, gonna give her a few days to soak it up, before putting more water into her tray.
Here's the Pix...

Odd, thought I had a caption. Took her 4th (and 5th) nodes...

OK, to Sum up - Kooshie (Blackberry Kush, photoperiod) is pushing 7 weeks, and starting to get a bit stinky. hoping to hold her in Veg for another 3 weeks, until I get Goldie (grow one) harvested. There's room in the bloom room if necessary, but... Cookie and Boo (Tropicana Cookies, Auto, Blueberry Headband photo) clock in at just 5 weeks, Cookie prolly about to flip herself. Nikki and Dawn are three weeks, and seem to be lagging, especially Dawn.
Here's the Pix!

Hey Pete check out Krissi's style of trimming / defoliating right before flip. I love this - lollipopping. I do similar, although not quite this extreme, right around the time flowering starts.

She knows how to grow weed.

Yeah, b/n Krissi and Emmy, the ladies provide QUITE the edjumacation!!
Goldie looks pretty well lollied, atm, but letting any remaining "branch hugging" larf roll, as suggested. Wtf, can always be "samples" eh?

Don't know that I'd be inclined to 'pop an auto, be interesting to see where it gets her

GAWD, three weeks to harvest (nominally) and I get to flip the next one...

Thinking of a s x s of dos si dos auto / photo next grow might be interesting...

I think she found the water, PT3...
Convert to SIP, Get Pumped UP! Nikki, yesterday, and Today...

And Cookie, may have to rename her Houdini - she was tied up GOOD yesterday, today looking all right side up and bushy as hell! Looks like she's showing some pre-flower, which at 5 weeks for an auto ought to be about right..

Weekend Update - Not sure what's going on w/ Nikki and Dawn, they just seem to be being SUPER slow. I did a re-shuffle on the lights (Kooshie was getting singed, and light was too far from 'da babies' who were NOT thriving. So, Kooshie now has the whole Viviosun 1000 (100w, non-dimming, 12" square panel) to herself (and hating it, I'm sure) while the others share the lower height Mars Hydro. Which they are all loving. Time to get Dawn on a tray I can water and get her SIPPING...

Sorry about the late update, B/N too much food / booze, not enough sleep, other stuff going on this weekend was a hot mess. But hey, here we go... Kooshie, a day short of 9 weeks, got topped the other day, seems to be recovering well from that. Prolly lollypop her this w/e and flip her to bloom as soon as Goldie harvests. (or they can share space, if necessary) Cookie and Boo, just over 7 seeks seem to be holding their own. Cookie is starting to show definite blooms, which is good, as she "should" finish in another 4 seeks, or so. Boo is a photo, so she can take as long as she likes, but will prolly be ready to move to bloom room in 3-4 weeks. Nikki and Dawn both 5 weeks, seem pretty SLOW, and Nikki is certainly not thriving... I think she's got soggy feet. Or dry. tough to be sure. Gonna go back to top water on her, for a bit, I think.

Ok, Busy evening... This morning, I completed assembly of the SIP tank, so this evening I mixed up hte dirt (same recipe as before - seems to be working, and it's not complicated - bag of topsoil / potting mix, 1/2 bag manure, bag (8L) of Perlite bag (6 lb) of worm poop. Start w/ the dirt, add the perlite, stir. one cup ea of blood and bone meal. Stir. Worm casts, stir. manure, stir. recycle dirt from dead plant, stir WELL. Fill the 3.5gal buckets to the collar (the bottom feed SIP might work with a larger gradient? give 'em more room, any way) Assembled the DIY SIP - would kind of like a bigger reservoir - haven't measured yet, expect it to be 1.5 - 2 L. Won't even start using it until she gets a bit bigger..
quick question about your soil mix - in my experience top soil and potting mix are VERY different... I'm assuming you mean potting mix here, but wanted to ask just to clarify. thanks!

You are, of course, correct, and I need to pay attention to WHICH potting soil / MIX I'm using (and yeah, NOT "Topsoil") Typically which ever non-MiraGrow is cheap at Menards / Home Despot, but composition of that might be more important than I was weighting it... Good Catch, thanks! Hope you enjoy the thread, and if the SIP concept has interest, click the link provided by Azimuth a few posts up...

Ok, yesterday I lolly popped Kooshie - she needed a good thinning before flipping to bloom next week. Opened her up nicely, cleared out the lower debris, and don't THINK I much impacted the tops... Gonna be fun watching her stretch. Based on Goldie's lesson, might engage the SCROG frame and grid, if only to keep the colas from going all floppy. Meanwhile, Nikki continues to struggle along, Dawn appears to (Finally?) be getting it into gear - hard to believe these two are only two weeks behind Cookie. Who is off to the races, building bigger buds! Go Cookie! Boo is just happily cruising along, getting ready for next topping session, next w/e at the latest...
