On Walden's Outdoor Grow In The PNW '18: A Nonlinear Tale

I really like that last pic of your Hashplant, with the tomatoes as a backdrop!
Thanks, Beez! The night shot was inspired by @Liquidintel 's fantastic night shots, though not close to the quality of his work. I like the smoke wisps from the fatty I was burning when I took the shot, though.

Early October again…The Am. Hashplant gets the chop. True to lineage, it’s extremely resinous, making trim a slow chore. Nice to get a healthy amount of trim hash, but it’s so resinous that trimming is like try to cut stencils in paper that’s been dipped in tar.

Slow work, but the buds look absolutely great, compact, dense, & fragrant in a funky pine-sol ammonia sort of way. The sensory input & my experience tell me these buds oughta pack some punch. Here's some in the sunlight they were grown in:

Early October Now, there’s only 5 left…two El Chuy, two Purple Goat & the Amnesia Hashplant. All getting fatter & frostier on a daily basis.

The two El Chuy are packing and frosting nicely.

Like the LebNep, the Purple Goat has two quite different phenos. One’s runt that’s running quite purple, true to it’s name & putting out the frost.
But it’s sister cousin is much larger, without a hint of purple, though it, too, is frosting up.

The Amnesia Hashplant is just days away from the chop. Hard to get perspective on these colas in these night shots, but the ones in the second photo are about the length of a forearm.

I’m a curious about how all of ‘em are gonna smoke, but I’m definitely quite curious about the Amnesia Hashplant.

Also more than satisfied w/ the readiness sequence of this grow!

Beautiful night shots!!

Still early Oct. I’m barely done with trimming up the AmHash, when it starts pouring bucketing late one evening…

The only prudent move with the bud stage & the weather is take down some of the El Chuy and the Purple Goat as a hedge against bud rot. Doing so will not only provide a hedge, but provide a bit more space and ventilation for the remaining tops, making the plants a little less susceptible to rot.

I’d planned on letting the remaining plants go only about a week more, so the hedge harvest isn’t a major bummer, especially since I tend to favor the racier buzz from early harvests, but the timing’s just damn inconvenient.

So, I harvest about 40% of the El Chuy & the big not-purple Purple Goat, during the late night downpour. Then it’s an even later night trimming marathon.

It was the right move…I find some nascent rot. It’s only affected about ½ gram, but the stuff can spread like wildfire.

That must have been several hours of trimming! I can't imagine doing all that by yourself.

Wow, I'm really digging the monochrome setting! That cola is massive!!
Thanks! I rather like black & white photography & cinematography.

That weather-forced early harvest took me about 20 hrs of solo trimming. Chop wood, carry water. It's what life's about.

Yikes, having had 6 of my 10 fingers surgically repaired over the last 5 years, I don't think I could have done that!

Yeah they did do a really good job - a liitle permanent damage in only one finger. Just not a lot of strength in them yet. They get fatigued quickly so lots of breaks during trimming.

Mid Oct. Got a short respite from trimming.

Now, just days away from the final chop, which’ll be a relief. Every morning’s wet outside in Oct., with either dew or rain. As a result, I spend every morning inspecting for rot & shaking water off the colas. I won’t miss that ritual.

The remaining Los Chuys colas are looking nice.
They stink more than anything I’ve ever grown. Just two partial plants, but I can smell ‘em almost a block away. Seriously. I took one fresh cola in to a buddy at his work & it stunk so much he had to put it in the lock-in in the back.

The remaining non-purple Purple Goat gets frostier daily.
As is its much different sister/cousin Purple Goat. Its tops’ purple hue has deepened.

Runty, but lovely plant, that’s looking tasty.

Still mid-Oct...The plants are ready for chop, but we've got a bit of rare, dry, sunny days. They're fattening up daily, especially Los Chuys
So I decide to let 'em go a coupla more days & harvest peppers instead

Still late Oct. Idle hands are the devil’s workshop…with the chop a few days away, I decide to dip into the purple pheno of the LebNep, which has now cured for about 3 weeks. Still a little early in the cure, but curiosity wins out.
Very dense buds with really nice flavor…quite fragrant with a berry/incense taste. Super smooth.

I really like the buzz. Has an initial indica-esque quick-hit, followed by a focused, very cerebral lift. Great daytime, get-stuff-done buzz, that’s still nicely relaxing. Won’t be hard for me to burn through my yield on this one…

Hopefully you haven't burned through all the LebNep yet! Happy New Year to you and your family. :)

Thanks, Beez! Hope you & yours have a brave new year!

Later Oct. Final chopping day. Down comes the runty purple Purple Goat, it’s not-purple sister/cousin & the rest of the Los Chuy.

One last sequence of late-evening solo trimming marathons, followed by drying, & curing.

Nice looking buds, all frosty and wonderfully fragrant.

Los Chuy, quite stinky with its diesel lineage

The non-purple Purple Goat came out nicely

The runty purple Purple Goat yielded some of the prettiest buds among the 6 phenos from the 4 strains.

Several more weeks of cure & I’ll be diving into the produce.

November retrospective: I’m more than satisfied with the grow. Nice variety, decent yield, considering limited sun. I’ll post a bit more on a taste test, post cure, but have dipped into enough of it to know it’s all quite fine smoke.

Although I usually figure that most seed vendors’ stated flower times aren’t accurate, those from Cannabeizein & Oregon Green seeds were nearly spot on.

The Amnesia Hashplant was the biggest yielder, but that’s probably because it was in the sunniest spot of any of the 7 plants I grew to finish.

All told, the grow ran me about $68, including water. I don’t have a scale, because I’m not that concerned with total yield. But based on a visual estimate, the cost per gram of dried trimmed flower was about $0.21/g, The grow also produced an additional 3 quarts of very stony fan leaf oil or the 2 g of xlnt trim hash.

This year’s no aberration—past coupla years, my grows have run pretty close to the same—about $0.30/g dried trimmed flower, but I did do a bit better this season.

But it ain't just about dinero. For me it's about using less manufactured & shipped stuff & at minimal environmental impact. This crushed continent is past having had enough of that.

I always grow far more than I can use, including what I give away to a relative with seizures, so I always giving more than half of what I grow annually. I estimate is that this year’s produce is enough to supply myself & my relative with great weed for about 3 years, so I’m going to have to step up my give-away program.

I may not grow next year, not only because I’ve got an ample supply, but it’s also one of the ways I deal with limiting pest problems.

One of the things I definitely enjoyed this year was the variety of phenotypes, but that’s how I feel about peppers & ‘maters I grew, too. I love outdoor grows!

When you say you may not grow next year, are you also saying no tomatoes or peppers either?
