Oldsmokey Goes Hydro

Your hillbilly water chiller is interesting. You had to wait till after I bought a chiller to tell me about it. That's okay I like the hands off approach with the chillet set it and forget it.
Don't you DARE try to tell me you didn't know about my hillbilly chiller. You know me, I rambled on for days about it in my Wembley thread. I even made a movie for Peeloff. Haha.

I reckon if you were having an issue with the RH you could just duct it outside.
Yes. Humidity could be a real problem. It might be a deal breaker in Florida if you couldn't exhaust outside. But I live in a desert to be honest, it helps me out. If my plants are large the humidity may get a little high through transportation, but nothing serious, I have a dehumidifier just in case

Mini update day 7 veg
Good day everybody I did a reservoir change today below arer the details.

Drained and filled reservoir approximately 40 gallons
Added 400ml part 1 & 2
TDS 780
Added 80 ml Enzymes Komplete
Added 78ml ph down
PH 5.8
Res Temp 68F

I have been wanting to start with some silica and have looking for a product derived from monocillic acid instead of potassium silicate as recommended by @Stltoed. Not easy to find in Canada I can get power SI ship from the states but it's going to cost almost $200 for a 250 ml bottle us funds plus shipping I'm not paying that. I asked about it at the store second time second store and again there not to sure what I am talking about. Then try and sell me rhino skin and tell me they work the same. I told him no there not the same tried to explain the little I know about it to no avail. Then he asks so is that it for you today thinking I wanted the RS. I said yes I think that will do it and walked out.

I put some hooks on the pots for LST when the time comes. I also put two wires from one end of the room to the other one on each side of the room to hang yoyos from. With this set up there will be very little room to get around in there later on so I am trying to think ahead and get things in place now while it's easier.

That all for the Mini update have a great day!

Sucks about the Silica. No Silica is worth the kind of money they're asking for Power Si. You need someone in the states to ship you products on the cheap!

I did find another product I can get in Canada can't remember the name but never heard of it and it's not any cheaper. Not really sure if it's worth using the other stuff that's available to me.
Imagine you're in mid flower and aggressively feed your plants... Are you running out of room on your PPMs?

I said yes I think that will do it and walked out.

One of the reasons I gate grow stores. They think they're all mighty, and you'll always buy what they recommend instead, two words for them, starts with a F and end's with you..

I've seen you guys talk about this silica, does the style of your grow use more? Not an indoor grower so not sure, I know our plants need it so was curious.
Or is it just the bioavailability of silca , because in hydro there's no microorganisms to break it down and make bioavailable.

Probably be close if all is going well.
Well, I used Botanicares Silica Blast to some effect for quite a while. Youll get tougher leaves, but I really can't say it will do what the spendy stuff does. Silica Blast has a stable pH, isn't nosebleed expensive (in California) and the company seems to have their shit together. You could try it then do a comparison once the prices come down on the mono-silicic. Don't bother with Armor Si. Its a pH nightmare, the negatives will outweigh the pluses

Yeah. They are always pushing some new kind of dirt... I just say where's the ocean forest.

The agressive growth of hydro seems to make Silica a no brainer. Its not necessary to run Silica in hydro, but it sure helps. Silica takes quite a while to break down to a usable molecule even in dirt. But you're right, there are no mechanisms to break it down in water.

There are more than one Silica molecule used in growing plants. By far the most popular is the Silica derived from Potassium. Its been around forever its relatively cheap, but the molecule is arranged in a chain and the plant has a hard time using it. In soil you can use it, but if you use it now it will take longer than the life of your plant to break down to bioavailability. So you will need to recycle your soil a couple times to really see the benefit. The preferred Silica molecule is Mono-silicic acid. A fully broken down Silica that plugs right in to the plant and is immediately available. Its much more stable pH wise, and will not fluctuate like a Potassium product in hydro. Some Potassium Silicas are absolutely awful when it comes to pH... so you wind up with a possessed reservoir, and a useless additive.

As for personal success stories the first time I used this new generation of Silica products I had 2 plants that did 27oz 1 went over a pound by itself. This last season I had 4 plants in hydro, one of them did 26oz. I also had a plant in soil that I was fed waste water from the hydro that went over 10oz.
