Octopot Adventures: A Community Exploration

My fellow virtual neighbors, meet Octopot. :battingeyelashes:

I’ve been staying in the home of BrixNewb, waiting on an apartment in a local senior community, and during this stay I’ve had the pleasure of documenting his introduction to Octopots. I’d come across the concept over a year ago when Pigeons420 tried one in his garden and covered that failed attempt on his YouTube channel.

Things got quiet, that bit of information stashed away in my gray matter until it was needed. Then one day overlord brought it up in conversation as a method that’d caught his eye, and one thing lead to another. Before long Brix was interested enough to order his first pot and give one a go. She’s the Pineapple Chunk pictured in the lead photo, taken just as she began to open up.

It didn’t take her long to look like a field flower. :laughtwo:

By New Year’s Eve she’d grown so huge he had to string her up.

Watching this plant grow was one of the most exciting things I’ve witnessed in the years I’ve been growing. It reminded me of the thrill I’d felt when I turned my first plants over to their SWICK basins and let them water themselves.

At harvest Brix pulled at least 12.5 ounces of huge, chunky, frosty and fragrant buds. He grew with used Doc Bud’s HBB kit soil (first run) , vegged with Urban Farms Vegetable Fertilizer, and flowered her with Urban Farms Texas Tomato Food nutrients. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy, as Brix likes to say. Lol!

BrixNewb has a number of Octopots running in his garden at the moment, testing out nutrient lines to find the one that suits his plants and growing style best, and we decided it was time to get me started on one and get some excitement generated in the community.

I recently came across a delightful little chemovar grown by @MagicJim that fired my libido up with an energy that consistently caught me off guard. :laughtwo:

You bet I had to have a cut. Lol! A little finagling, a bit of cosmic whimsy, and @beez0404 had a rooted cut in my hands.

Today Brix hooked me up with a 3-gallon Octopot, The Sunshine #4 medium to plant in, and the Mega Crop 2.0 nutrients I’ll be feeding her.

Evidentially, I’m challenged about reading instructions before I jump in head first. I made a couple missteps in the assembly, but they won’t make a lot of difference in the end. I neglected to moisten the medium before assembly, and overcame that by doubling the amount of water on the initial - and only- top drench, and filling the reservoir a little higher to allow for more wicking this first time.

I also neglected to pH adjust the water, something I’ll correct the next time. @InTheShed has an interesting thread on why one doesn’t need to pH the water going in, but rather check the medium with a slurry test. A slurry test won’t be possible with this system, since you won’t ever saturate the medium enough to get a read, so it’s safest to keep the nutrient water to the recommended 6.3 - 6.8 range.

Next watering I’ll begin checking pH and adjusting accordingly.

There are a number of manufacturer videos available on YouTube explaining the system, and I’ll let you search them out at your leisure.

This thread is to generate the excitement I feel on a broader level. At the moment we know of five members already signed on to the system, @BrixNewb, @PhatK (who I’ve yet to meet :ciao:), @Rooster1 (just ordering his equipment), @overlord, and myself. I’d appreciate any others that might have been missed jumping in to join the fun.

There are no expectations of involvement with this thread other than that you’ll post updates and comments any time you get the urge.

The particulars of my own grow are:

Chemovar: It’s It Punch (clone) from Sun Grown Genetics
Medium: Sunshine #4
Method: Octopot soil/hydro hybrid
Nutrients: Mega Crop 2.0
Lights: Powered by @TimberGrowLights, 100 W Vero 29 COBs for veg and 3000k quantum board for flower

Hey.... let’s have some fun and learn to grow even bigger plants. :slide:

@CraZysWeeD has a similar setup running as well. I'm in love with the idea of self watering systems. Hopefully others will have some fun with them too.

I’d be curious to hear what he’s doing.

Hopefully the electric is included in the rent! ;)

Yes it is. :laughtwo: I don’t use a computer or a television, and I only plan to run one tent, with the possibility of a small early veg area. It’ll be a trick to keep usage in line, but the Octopot technology may be my ticket to the kind of harvests I’ll need to make up for the loss in tent space.

I'm in on this one... I've built my own octopots. They are rough around the edges but are doing the job just grand... on my next crop I have a few minor adjustments.. like dark pots not see through lmao.. I like the system very much and the idea of combining both world fascinates me... also no bubbles lmao...

Will be excited to see what you get. If you fancy dropping your eyes through mine it's my 3rd journal. We are close to harvest. And to be fair if it wasn't for the octopots I don't think the plants would have survived this long lmao..

Good luck and I hope you enjoy them

Made it!!!! Planning on investing in an Octopot as well. Looking forward to this seeing this journey play out!

Do not but they are simple to build mine cost all of £15

3 plastic nets a 7.5gal fabric pot and a plastic container.. cut a few holes nice and tight and boom.. octodream. Again check my journal and you will know what not todo when building lmao good fun

While that's great that you made your own, there are a multitude of reasons people would prefer to buy an Octopot versus making their own. I am one of those people who has no problem paying $50 for an Octopot. The product (at least the 6 gallon) and the service are worth every penny in my opinion. The 3 gallon can be improved, but does the job.

Great to hear @Jgrowlove. :high-five: You won’t regret it.

Thanks. And thanks for sharing the pictures. I’m thrilled it’s working so well and, I applaud the initiative to make your own. :thumb:

:hmmmm: interesting, :popcorn::Namaste:

Have you seen the beasts Brix is growing dynamo? I wanna replicate something close to that. :laughtwo:

Neat! :high-five: Do you have a detailed tutorial on your thread? I’ll look in later after I finish other projects in the works.

I encourage DIY projects, they create more options. The cost of the Octopot isn’t enough to scare most away though. The quality and customer service alone make them a standout product line.

Well this is awesome. Ive got me some learning to do! Im definitely going to watch for a while and see how things go. This is super interesting!!

We’re glad to have you along for the fun BudzFreak. You’ll like this.....

Brix was playing with plants and we caught a few interesting shots. :battingeyelashes:

Zam x Pan is two weeks into her flowering schedule and just today burst forth in bloom. She hasn’t done any significant stretch yet, so we’re not really sure what to expect from her. Lol! @Morglie, this one’s a true beauty. :green_heart:

What we really wanted to show you was the roots into the reservoir of the L3G, a full month under flowering lighting.

Here..... let’s get closer.....

Yeah..... we’re really excited about that too. :slide:

She is a frosty chemovar, one of the stickiest Brix grows.

Brix planted his next Octopot girl, a Vanilla Kush from seed, fed Mega Crop 2.0.

My own reservoir should be back to the appropriate level by morning. Then I’ll maintain it at the first line for the next 2-3 weeks as her roots find their way to the water.

This is gonna be such fun. :yahoo:

I started testing them on 01/09/19, Using Promix HP, EWC, & some added perlite.
Broke out some NL fem seeds I have had for a while. Have three running right now.

I use RO water, and at first I noticed what looked like cal/mag issues. Contacted urban Farms and asked about their veg & TTF formula. They assured me there was plenty of cal/mag in their product.

problem still existed couple of weeks later.

Then the roots hit the rez good

And Finally last Tuesday

I notice the large one on the front right has had some leaves get a little out of whack this last week. But she has been the most finicky & largest since day 1.

:ciao:

There you are. :ciao:

PhatK explained the importance of the cloning dome to Brix, and said it helped protect his leaves, so we used them on ours. Did you use yours M'lord? It seems once they hit the reservoir all is well from then on out. Brix's Candy Cane had the same issues your NLs did.

They're looking happy. My, how they've grown! It's a wonder to watch them jump to attention when the roots hit the res, isnt it? :laughtwo: There must be a way to keep that leaf degradation from occurring. A little more practice and I'm certain we'll find it.

No I didn't.

You'll get a chance to see if it helps ours and decide if it's a good idea next time. Brix didn't use any on his previous plants either, but they were good-sized transplants, and probably hit their reservoirs faster than a little one would.

Th I saw the octopot and fell in love and needed one instantly. However they are made over in Canada and getting one over here in the UK we ago at nearly 100$ so I just made one. . Saved time and money...
