Dries Out?

When a container of soil has lots of water, the nutrients, ie the salts in the fertilizer, stay in solution–for the most part. So the phosphate, iron, magnesium etc exist as ions floating around in the water that surrounds the soil particles. In this form the nutrients are easily absorbed by plant roots.

As the water starts to evaporate, the ions in solution become more and more concentrated. Water escapes into the air, but the nutrient ions can’t go anywhere–they stay in the pot. As the concentration of ions increases, some of the ions start getting too crowded and they move out of the water and form solid salts attached to the soil. You have seen this happen if you have old pots around. The white/yellow deposit on the pot are solid salts that have been deposited as water evaporates. A similar thing happens in your water kettle. As you boil water, some salts deposit in the bottom as a white/yellow film that gets thicker over time.

Which nutrients become solids first? It depends on the fertilizer you use, and on the quality of your water. Each ion behaves differently, but calcium, phosphate and magnesium tend to become solids (precipitate) more quickly than other ions.

Once these nutrients have precipitated into a solid, they tend to remain that way even if more water is added. Think of your old pots and the white deposit on them. The white stuff does not easily wash away with fresh water. You usually have to scrape the white stuff off to get rid of it.

Plant roots react negatively to both high concentrations of ions in solution and to the dry salts. This is one of the reasons that over fertilizing in pots is bad for your plants. Too little fertilizer may stunt your plants, but too much can kill them.

I un potted some other plants i have in my soil mixes , i wanted to see how the soil reacts when wet ,
after lifted a hand full of wet soil i squeezed and a lot of water came out , so my medium is fast drain and i tested that also but it holds on to water and nutrients for a long time , so if i get this right i am better to water more often but less , little small watering top and bottom try keep everything that is in there available for my plant roots aka nutrients on demand , the 3 in the 7 gallon or being put to the test :ganjamon:

Hi Nutty, Very interesting observations. I'm growing in coco so all this is great. I try to overflow at least20% to avoid build-up but my fabric 3gal pots have a slight, light salt stain when I'm through with my run. I soak em in water, then, after buffering my coco I put em in the calmag for a bit as well. I dunno if that does anything but I do it. Smile and stay stoneder.

All done , i moved the pale one to the front so i can get it in and out to check her symptoms , give her some tlc .

Any ways that is me done today , got a good bit done , some pics for future ref as i do not have too many :rofl:

I also set my camera to make them look better pmsl :battingeyelashes:

Have a good day night even morning or what ever or where ever you are :ciao:

A nice big spliff, fat petes cookies grinned with some night queen

feeding my girls and singing this :theband::theband::bong::bongrip::hookah:

Well life on the farm is kinda laid back
Ain't much an old country boy like me can't hack
It's early to rise, early in the sack
I thank God I'm a country boy
Well a simple kinda life never did me no harm
A raisin' me a family and workin' on a farm
My days are all filled with an easy country charm
Thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy
When the work's all done and the sun's settlin' low
I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow
The kids are asleep so I keep it kinda low
I thank God I'm a country boy
I'd play Sally Goodin all day if I could
But the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good
So I fiddle when I can, work when I should
Thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy
Well I wouldn't trade my life for diamonds and jewels
I never was one of them money hungry fools
I'd rather have my fiddle and my farmin' tools
Thank God I'm a country boy
Yeah, city folk drivin' in a black limousine
A lotta sad people thinkin' that's mighty keen
Son, let me tell ya now exactly what I mean
I thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
I thank God I'm a country boy, yes Sr.
Well, my fiddle was my daddy's till the day he died
And he took me by the hand and held me close to his side
Said, "live a good life and play the fiddle with pride
And thank God you're a country boy"
Well, my daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle
Taught me how to work and play a tune on the fiddle
Taught me how to love and how to give just a little
And thank God I'm a country boy
Well I got me a fine wife I got me an ole fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy

I have my room planned out and will make a wall using my lucky fish boxes hahahaaa , things are just brilliant , i want my temps at 28/30 c not 17 and 18
