Noob's First Grow: Indoor, Coco, 4 Plants

Good afternoon, all.

Hope that your week is off to a great start!

Today is Day 31 of veg for my foursome. Over the past several days, I have gradually been conducting the first steps of the quadlining technique. Last week, my GSC and Purple Kush had the bottom two nodes removed, and then a few days later had their tops removed above node #4. On Saturday, I removed nodes #1 and #2 from the two gals that are a little further behind - Trainwreck and Green Crack. But they had made great progress over the past couple of days, and so I continued the process to top these two, as follows:

Trainwreck:

Before topping:

After topping:
1767814

Green Crack:

Before topping:
1767815

After topping:
1767818

The other plants - GSC and Purple Kush - seemed to have survived their sessions from last week quite well. GSC in particular is doing really well!

Purple Kush I would say is doing "ok" - the new growth has slowed a little, and seems to a little stressed. I think that the top that had been removed was giving quite a bit of shade. Now that the growth is exposed to full light, it appears to be acclimating slowly - a bit "crunchy" looking. I have boosted the humidity a few points to try to offset.

In a few more days, I think that the side branches coming off of node #4 on the GSC will be long enough that I can gently start the anchoring process, in order that growth from node #3 can catch up - not a big difference in height between them right now anyhow.

Please let me know what you think! Thanks everyone.

You are correct to be thinking about starting the training soon. What are you going to use to tie them down again? I know you got the garden stakes, but what are you tying to the plant itself?

Thanks! Yes, I have the wire u-shaped stakes to sink into the coir medium. I also have foam-coated twist-ties to use on the tender shoots. I was worried that the wire stakes on their own would cut or damage the young growth. Does this sound like a good approach?

Sounds good. The branches would probably pull the stakes right out of the soil if you tried to only use those....you wouldn’t be able to push them down far enough into your medium for them to hold well. A coated tie sounds great.

Ok! BTW, should have mentioned that I also have binder clips that I can attach to the sides of the fabric pots, and then run the twist ties to them. Thanks again for asking.

Looking nice and will follow along for the rest of your grow if OK

Welcome, Tomuk! Delighted to have you join. This is my first grow, and so any suggestions you have, please share. Any questions, I'll be happy to answer as best I can. I will try to check out your own journal in a bit.

Evening, everyone. Just a quick update today, with a few photos. Today is Day 32 of Veg.

Over the past several days, I have completed the first steps of quadlining. This included removing nodes #1 and #2, as well as topping above node #4. I did these steps separately, giving the plants a couple of days to recover from the node removal prior to topping. I also staggered a bit as two plants were a little further behind (Trainwreck and Green Crack). They all seem to be doing well, and the new growth from the "old" #3 and #4 nodes is coming along nicely.

Today I started the anchoring of node #4 growths, trying to keep almost horizontal (not fully, just slight upward slope), and on the same level as growth from node #3. I did this on the GSC and Purple Kush. Train and Green are still quite small, so they will get their turns in a couple of days.

GSC:

Purple Kush:

And just since I took photos while they were out of the tent, here is what Trainwreck and Green Crack look like today. Note, some spotting/browning on the lower leaves of Green Crack. I think this was from either a shortage of Cal/Mag or nutes being too strong. She is now getting her own "special" feeding, as the other three gals all seemed happy with the formula so far.

Hope that everyone has a great night!

You have done your research and it shows. These look great and good job showing patience on the smaller two. Something in our brains wants everything done at the same time for all 4 but growing these just don't work that way. The purple kush is really showing some purple in the leaves already. I think you are going to have some nice purple colas on this one. Going to be a beauty, I'm calling it now.

Thanks Ase! That is a huge compliment coming from the sensei. I couldn't have gotten this far (or even thought of trying this approach) without your journal and advice, as well as the helpful counsel of so many other friendly folks here. Such a great gang all-around.

So I understand that from here my task is to keep all the growing shoots that emerge at the same level, in order develop a nice flat canopy, correct? And keep going in veg until I have a nice round pattern reaching the edge of the pot? Flowering seems like a long way off still.

Patience is hard sometimes! So I am trying to keep myself busy with plans for an outdoor grow this summer and leave the poor current girls alone (most of the time) to just do their thing.

Correct.
