Noob's First Grow: Indoor, Coco, 4 Plants

Looking good Bard!
Nice trichs, pretty clear so far, be a vit careful with full spectrum, like the sun outside grows, colours the trichs early.
Notice the lack of cloudiness in the stalks. Im sure I will find something similiar under my full spectrum cmh...
Nice score on the usb scope.

Thanks Rider! I didn't know that about the full spectrum lights - much appreciated. I definitely want to err on the side of waiting too long versus harvesting too early, given the effects I am looking for. Have a good night.

Good afternoon, everyone.

Hope the weekend is going great for all of you. It is finally a beautiful day here! Sunny, warm, and quiet.

I am really pleased with the progress on my indoor grow.

Just so that I have good notes for my own reference later on my three photo-girls… I flipped lights to 12/12 on 5/20/19, which was DAY 73 of Veg. I saw the first pistils starting to emerge on 5/24/19, and so I will call that Day 1 of flower.

That makes today, 5/26/19, DAY 79 above ground, and DAY 3 of flower. The stretch is definitely on, and I was amazed that pistils emerged after only four days of 12/12. I am happy with the nice flat canopy on each plant, and it looks like there is potential for lots of bud sites. BTW, I am loving the new LEDs I installed about two weeks ago. The girls seem to be liking them too.

Humidity had been creeping up in the tent over the past several weeks, hitting the high 60s when lights were off and temperatures declined. Too high given I have one auto in bloom, and the three photo girls just about to flower. The mini-dehumidifier that I had in the tent was useless.

So I rigged this up. This bigger unit dehumidifies the whole basement. I have an intake duct positioned over the unit, so that when the tent fan is on, it sucks in the dry air. Works great – tent stays in the 45-55% range consistently now.

Here are some plant pics…

GSC:
This is my poor burn victim. She has needed much more diluted feeding than the other photos, and I made an error in the formula several weeks ago. You can still see a few burned leaves further down. However, she has been doing great recently. New growth is a beautiful, healthy green.

Trainwreck and Green Crack:

These have been going great all along. Just a touch of nute burn on a leaf here and there, so I think I have the nute formula in a good place.

Tough to get a good pic of the pistils, but I did get one I think. Anyone think this purple coloration on the stem is a nutrient problem, or just pigmentation?

Nutrients for these three photos will be moving to a ratio of 2:winkyface:3 starting today (it was 1:blushsmile:1 for the past week). And continuing on with Cal/Mag at 0.45-0.50 – pretty high levels, but I learned early that they needed it (combination of coco and LEDs).

Finally, my one auto, Purple Kush, (aka LongHorn) is just cranking away, getting fatter, stickier, and stinkier! It is DAY 41 of flower for her, and she will continue to get a diluted nute formula at 1 : 5 : 4

Comments or suggestions appreciated! Have a great afternoon.

They all look great. Way to get your environment dialed in brother! :high-five:

Thanks Magoo! Still learning everyday, which is a big part of the fun. Grateful for the help and moral support here from all of you!

Purple stems and branches can be both genetic and a sign of magnesium deficiency. Imho, it's just a strain thing in your case. Everything looks good from here!

Thanks. Since they get so much cal/mag already, I am relieved that you think so - appreciate your stopping by!

Happy Friday!!

Hope that everyone is doing well. My girls are, for sure. I am feeling good about the environment - the big dehumidifier is doing its job for the whole basement, and keeping the tent in a good range of 45-56%, depending on the temperature. Temps themselves have been a high of 78F, and a low of 69F. I also think that the nute formulations are in a sweet spot right now. So environment is cooperating!

For my three photo-period plants, today is DAY 84 above ground, and DAY 8 of flower (since seeing the first pistils). All three are doing great. My GSC, which had been burned because of a nute-formula error I made, it actually pulling out to lead the pack! Beautiful new leaves, as well as lots and lots of pistils forming. Not just on the top, but down the branches as well.

The other two photo-periods, which have been really nice looking all along, are also throwing off pistils, and stretching like crazy. Here is a group shot. GSC is front left. My Green Crack is front right, and my Trainwreck is back right. My one auto-flower, a Purple Kush is at the back left.

I did a big defoliation right before flipping to 12/12 - not that you can really tell now! While I would love to get in there and remove some more leaves, I am going to let them be for now, apart from tucking anything that is blocking light. Come DAY 21 of flower (two weeks from now) I will do another round of defoliation, especially under the canopy to help with air circulation, as well as fan leaves to let light into the bud stalks. I will try not to let my OCD desire to clean them up for another two weeks.

Finally, the Purple Kush. Today is DAY 52 of flower (since first pistils) and DAY 84 above ground. So, midway through week 8 of flowering. She is stacking and getting fat. Since my training got interrupted, she has a bizarre shape, but still seems to be chugging along quite nicely - my LongHorn girl:

I was beginning to wonder if she would be ready to harvest soon, so I took some tiny samples - about the size of a pen-tip - of a sugar leaf and from the side of a bud. Here's what they look like under the inexpensive USB microscope:

Sugar Leaf

Bud

In my opinion, she has a way to go yet. I see a little amber on the head of a couple of trichs on the sugar leaf (which I think matures ahead of the bud) and pretty much everything else is clear. I still think the purple colouration in a couple of places is pretty cool. In addition, @Lowrider72 shared with me in my earlier post that I need to be looking for cloudy/amber in the stems of the trichs, not just on the tips. So not time yet.

From here, I'll just be staying the course. Photo girls are on a nute ratio of 2-2-3, and auto gal is getting 1-5-4. Different ECs for each plant, based on what they can tolerate. And all of them get lots of cal/mag in the water first, before the other feed is added.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks everyone for stopping by.

Especially if those are sugar leaves.

The first micro image is of a sugar leaf. The second one is a top bud. But either way, I was thinking the same thing. I am thinking that I would like to see quite a bit of amber, as I am going for a more sedative effect (bedtime medicine). I will check them again under the microscope in a about a week. Make sense?

Thanks, guys, for the comments, questions, suggestions, and likes. I'll try to respond to some of the points you raised. But first, yes, @Chris Scorpio things are way better with pics! And so let's see if I can figure out how to do this.

From largest to smallest, here are my four plants (all are in Solo cups, and will be transplanted into 3-gallon fabric pots this evening or tomorrow):

On the trichromes, this bit is the hardest to go through after all the work , effort , time. Waiting as they cloud feels like an eternity. You are doing brilliantly. You will enjoy every micron of thc you get to ingest , knowing exactly what love and affection has gone in definitely sweetens the flavours. I would find a nice cosy space next to chocolate for when you harvest this motherlode. A well deserved harvest awaits . Not long now :thumb::lot-o-toke:
