Newbie grower, help please

I'm with @Old Salt too, be smart about growing, dont advertise it.

Did you read what was said to about low E glass? I'm in the construction industry, not sure that your window light is going to be enough to give your plants what they need. That's why the successful Growers on here use a high intensity LED or hid the mimic the Sun. When your glass has a low E coating, the sun's radiation will no longer be able to effectively help your plants grow. This is called emissivity.

Like Beez, I've used FFOF to start my plants, just don't trust the claims that they will feed your plants from start to finish...... Claim is false. How did they know how long your veg time is..... That's why the claim is false. The fox farm does however do a great job until the nutrients start to disappear.

I plan on just using triple mix soil for the entire grow. I have read not to water them with water from the tap, is this true?

I have been looking at an LED grow light on amazon and thinking I may start them in my basement

The better you take care of them, the crazier they will become. You can buy soil from your hydroponics store that you can use outside. I wouldn't use triple mix as cows stomachs cannot break down certain seeds and you will end up with a pile of weeds.

Where abouts are you....approx?

If you're just looking for a light to start your seeds, I wouldn't go any further than a $50 T8 or T5 fluorescent unit. Just make sure you have the right bulbs and keep it close enough to your plants that they don't stretch a mile. If you think you're going to go a little further than that, just be sure you spend your money wisely, there are a lot of shitti lights out there. I wish I could give you the website for the place that I got my QB's from. I pick them up this weekend and they were a stellar deal. Right here in Ontario.
Maybe p.m. me, it might allow me to share the website there?

It depends on what's in your tap water. If you are on a municipal water supply, you need to remove the chlorine and chloramine. If the water is chlorinated, you can let it sit with an open top overnight to get rid of it. Most municipalities use chloramine, a mix of ammonia and chlorine. You need a carbon filter to remove that.

If you are on a private well, you should get your water tested. Mine has a very high TDS, and contains ten times the allowable limit of arsenic. I use an RO to filter water for drinking, cooking and growing.

Whether you are on a municipal or private water supply, I highly recommend an RO. Municipal water supplies have much more leeway than private wells as far as contaminants are concerned. A decent system, with at least a year's supply of filters can be had for under $300 USD.

Once outdoors I just use the garden hose. Plants did fine with it.

Love this! Hoping mine achieve at least this height!

I live in Toronto, but I do have a filter system on my sink. That should do the job, right?

I work landscaping so we get great deals on triple mix in bulk. If it requires a little weeding, then I’m not too bothered about that :)

I live in Toronto, Jane & St. Clair. I will send you a pm

There's a place called Bustan in Toronto. It's basically on Bermondsey by the Science Center. They sell all sorts of mixes specifically for outdoor growing marijuana. I would definitely look into them before I just used triple mix on my plants. It's much more than the weeds, the triple mix could be too hot and release nutrients hat undesirable times. What you're looking at doing outdoors, I would definitely leave good looking at spending a bit of money on my soil.

It's because of how many posts you have. I think you need a minimum of 50 to do that.

Hey @Guy Cavallero what do you mean by this? I'm using fox farm because its at my grocery store and has pretty labels and I see the name tossed about, I'm certainly not married to it...it seems to be doing fine for the veg part of my first grow, should I be aware of something they may lack in the future?

Definitely. I tried to experiments early on in my growing career, LOL. I grew out two Alpha dawg, not so sure that the strain is important but what happened to the soil was. With a 30 day veg, the alpha dawg had enough nutrients the lasted until the end and the plant turned out quite well. With a 60-day veg, there were nutrients lacking in the second half of flower. If I'm not forgetting, Calcium was fine but magnesium deficiency became evident. Although it broke my heart is in organic soil, I started adding Cal Mag at that point and although I lost a little bit of yield..... Things turned out okay. More than anything, just watch your girls for deficiencies. The Fox Farm soil was great, I was using it as a replacement for the kindsoil. Kind soil is the best ready-made organic soil on the market, they just don't ship to Canada.

I was happy with FFOF last season. I used it each time I up potted so the plants were getting fresh soil added after about 30 days. However, I did start adding grow nutes during veg and then some calmag when flowering started (saw early signs of deficiency).

Ollylake I am in central New Brunswick and I grow outdoors in raised beds using Promix and it works awesome. I start germinating April 15 two weeks after they are above soil they get a 1/4 dose of 3 part General Hydroponics system with Cal Mag and ph down. Then increase weekly until you max out. I too let my water sit for two days to dissipate the chlorine. I too tried starting out growing on the window sill when beginning, those just stretched for the light even with the lights on it was not working. so I used the 6500k 23 watt cfls lights 1 per plant at 2 - 3 inches away and you are golden. After 20 days above soil transplant to bigger containers. Follow the nutrient instructions for the whole grow and with photo period plants and you will see 6 to 9 foot plants, good luck.:peace:

Wow! That’s a lot of information.

I am borrowing a grow light from a friend to get them through the first 6-8 weeks but have no plan for nutrients. I was just going to use some quality soil and filtered water from my kitchen

If you do, they'll get 1/2 way through flower and not be able to leech enough nutrients from the ground. Especially if you live in a subdivision where they took all the good soil away.
I'd follow some advice and look into some nutrients.....(you can get a 1L bottle of A and B for $20) otherwise you'll end up with tall spindly plants with half-grown Buds and very few leaves as they cannibalize themselves.

Thanks. I went to my local hydroponics shop and brought a bottle of nutrients. It’s a new product designed for use throughout the whole grow. I also got a Ph testing kit for my water.

I have a bit of an issue now though. My seeds arrived on Tuesday and spent 20hrs in a glass of water. I then transferred them to paper towel and left them overnight. This morning I checked the towel when I woke up and found the top layer to be pretty much dry, the underside was still a little moist. I’m not worried I’ve dried the seeds out and have wasted my money.

Three of the seeds have cracked and are showing a tiny little taproot, the other two remain closed.

I applied more water and covered with a bowel to try and prevent them drying again while I’m at work.

Welcome @Ollylake ! I bet that bit of water in the underside towel kept your babies moist enough. I'm now sending cosmic thought waves from the pot condo to help those little magic beans thrive! Hopefully when you get home tonight you'll have 1/2 inch or more of tap roots formed. No matter the outcome though, you are heading in the right direction, and soon will be smiling from ear to ear watching your beautiful babies grow! Cheers, have a great day!

Just make the paper towel wet not dripping but good and wet, get that bowel off of the seed so it can get air. keep it wet and you should be good to go. What was the name of the nutrients that you picked up. Cal mag you will probably need, Good luck.

Thanks mate! I’ve had a short day at work today so I’m home early. The taproot has grown the tiniest bit on each cracked seed! I’m guessing this is a good sign. I’ve attached an image of their current condition.
