New to this world, advice appreciated

Reptile Owners Put Them In A Terrarium... The Glass Walls Knock Out All The UV Rays.

Well. I pulled the trigger and have these CFL bulbs on order. After perusing all of the reviews regarding animals I found this one gem that made me chuckle a bit -

"4/20/11 will see how the plants respond (yes I said plants) before making a call on its effectiveness but it works and it came quickly and securely for a great price

10/03/11 Did enhance chemical content of the plants...placed another order and will use 4 this round and see....very happy with this product"

Sort of the clincher in my decision makimg process. I will probably use them for more than just two weeks, but I will definitely wait until all of my plants have been sexed. Thanks again.

Do you happen to know how a UVB CFL bulb overcomes this issue? Does it generate way more UV light to compensate for the glass interference or is the glass treated in some way or is a special type of glass used?

I don't know exactly... no.

But I will hazard a guess...

The lens does not knock out 100% of the UV-B. The thicker the glass, the more loss.

The glass on a bulb is (relatively speaking) very thin. And I would expect that to mean very little loss of UV-B. As a direct comparison - the glass on my reflector is very thick.

So if you start with more than you need, loose a little to the glass, and end up where you want.... Success.
