Neikodog's 1st High Brix Multi-Strain

Smokey, this is what I did for round 2:
Foolproof seed starting:

1. soak seeds in RO for 12 hours. INcrease to 24 hours if seeds are more than 2 years old.
2. using small pots of High Brix soil (or any soil, but let's do this the best way we can) make a divit with the blunt end of a Sharpie....1/2 inch deep....no more. 1/4" is fine if the soil is thick and clay-like.
3. Fill small hole you just made with Roots! (or some other rockpowder/myko product
4. Using chopsticks, carefully remove a seed from the cup of water and drop it into the hole, gently cover it with dirt and keep it moist.

As long as the soil stays slightly moist, you'll have something above ground within a week. Better than that, you'll have a tap root that reaches down 4 inches before you see a seedling.

Make sure they germinate under bright light.
Do not cover seedlings in a humidity dome or anything like that. They're not cuttings and such treatment won't help anything, and will favor males, damping off and all sorts of issues. Don't do it.

The paper-towel method is really not a good way to go for several reasons:

1. exposes root to light
2. requires handling of roots
3. does not allow the plant to orient via Gravitropism.

You'll do much better doing it like I describe above.

Doc's instructions. The only variation was a couple of the seeds had cracked before I planted them but 2 didn't, same result.

Ah.....when I said "fill hole" did you put 1/2 inch of Roots! into the hole? I should have said, "put a pinch of Roots! in the hole.....but even if you did fill it, it should still be OK!

A few years ago, I ordered 100 seeds from a former sponsor here. Out of the 100 seeds, I got exactly 12 to germinate and they sucked! sometimes a batch of seeds just won't work. BTW, your soil isn't "eating" them. I promise. You've got bad seeds, sir.

That's what I'm thinking too. That's why I did the 3rd round they way I did it last time, as an experiment. The thing is they were from 4 different breeders and ordered from 3 different sources and were popular genetics. So that leads me to think something happened to them in the fridge even thought they were left in their original packaging and then placed into a paper bag. I won't give up.

That could be it too, I worked the roots into the soil (about a tablespoon) moistened, then waited about 20 minutes then put a small amount into the hole and planted. I put about 5-6 drops of water over the covering soil and placed them under the LED (at 4' above).

Did you order them all from the same source?

Boom! Why didn't I immediately think of the environment? Nothing is more important.....

Germination temps are 75 F kept steady by a space heater. the RH fluctuates between 30-40% depending on what's going on outside. It has been below zero here for a while. I have a humidifier meant for 1300 sq/ft running full blast (the room is 13x10x10) and a 5 gallon bucket in the tent with a towel hanging in it with a fan blowing on it.

Do you mean a whole table spoon per seed? That's deff more than needed a lil pinch will do :)

I worked in a tablespoon of Roots! into the 1 gallon soil pot in the top few inches ( I read that in one of doc's directions, it said if it was new hb soil to do this), then I watered the soil and let it sit for 20 minutes THEN I put a pinch of Roots! into the 1/4" hole and planted the seed, covered and put 5-6 drops of water over that.

The low to mid 70's are the nice temps for the best initial chance for developing females. With Fem seeds I'm not sure...but as with all things growing, if you add a stress-or, you increase the risks of male plants or in the case of fem seeds, the chance for hermies.

Not sure though if 80 degrees is enough to cause a fem seed to possibly hermie. My feeling is no, not quite high enough of a temp yet. Higher might earn you some though...

OK when I got home from work and checked the temp and humidity it was 73 F in the room and 77.8 in the tent. Humidity was 30%. Maybe I just need to wait until I can get the humidity higher.

The outside temp here is 5 F. the forecast looks to get better in the next week or so. I'll be out of town until Sunday night, if I don't have anything by then I'll just wait until I can get control of that humidity.

And guys I really do appreciate the help troubleshooting. I feel like I'm flunking kindergarten but damn it I'll be better for it when I/we get this figured out.

That's very low humidity for popping seeds. If my humidity is low I have no problem using a dome until they pop the surface. Just be sure to not over water them. The dome will "help" retain moisture longer, so you need to keep an eye on that (less is more with the dome on).

Once they break surface, get the dome off and if humidity is still lower than you want it, you can do a light misting of the seedlings everyday to give them a little humidity boost.
