The soil pH seems to be rather backwards, my best looking plant is sitting in 3pH soil. Doesn't seem right. The soil that the male plant came out of tested low pH too if my memory serves me right, will go check to be sure. See everyone later.

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

Hey PrestonedDav, your ideal ph range in soil is 5.5 to 6.5. Your premium ph range will be 6.0 to 6.2. It is good idea to try and maintain these levels as the plants ability to absorb nutrients are hindered when you are outside of these parameters. When you make the bottom of the plant happy, the top of the plant will make you happy.

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

hey dumpy, is their any basic product that can be added to soil to bring ph down or up instead of using ph up and down liquid from hydro store,

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

thanks jamthe3 for correcting me, wick the water out sounds like good idea mate, my 12v computer fans tend to dry the soil out quick even when its not directly on the plants, having the fan blowing directly on the leaves to fast can cause problems but the air moving will dry it out quicker, a wick would work a lot quicker, im just trying to think of ways to stop the plant going hermie, i saw another grow not so long back and it was a scrog and he had a few plants under a big scrog and one went hermie and pollen got on all the plants as he couldnt remove it from the scrog due to it been at the back of the room and all the plants been tangled together, but one went hermie and he got a load of seeds,

i over watered at the start but my plants where small and my plants where stunted then i stopped watering and only watered say every 5 days and my plants loved it and really took off, also bpn works complete miracles my plants changed within 48 hours of using it, so you have made a good choice with bpn,

I know exactly who you're talking about and felt awful for him. They were some fairly sizable plants.

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

Sure brodda. Dolomite lime will bring the soil to a neutral 7.0 ph. Bone meal and blood meal wil make the soil more alkalyn as well. Use blood meal while in a veg state and bone meal when flowering. Cotton seed meal and peat moss will lower your ph or make it more acidic. Try not to make this change quickly. Osmotic shock can occur and damage roots. Try to adjust it over 3 or 4 days. The best way to avoid ph (Potential Hydrogen) issues is to use a growing medium like ProMix HP. You will see adds for that product all over these pages. Makes things alot easier. You will never need to think about ph again.

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

Jam thanks for the info. I have one of the cheap wand type meters he's talking about( I think it is a good comparison), mine also measures moisture content. I also received my 3 step pH strips, they allow you to match 2 out 3 colors when comparing to the color chart provided. I am going to up date my journal and enter some more readings I took earlier tonight. Thanks for the info again! I will let you know more of what I am doing. 2 days until my BPN organic system gets here!:cheertwo:

When I was using the wand in the last post I was reading the wrong scale fo pH but now I think I got it down. Comparing the wand readings with the 3 step strip really makes me happy. I will be posting picks very shortly. The plants look ok but the 2 with the high moisture content are bothering me. I will be taken the advice about wicking the moisture from the buckets. I have very good (600 thread count) sheet that was torn some how, I am going to cut several strips and tuck them down the side of the bucket. I think that came from jamthe3, or donpaul ( :cheesygrinsmiley: I get confused easy ). I will also be talking to BPN (Corey) to find out the best way to adjust nutes for pH. I really don't think I'll have to alter it much. The chart can be a big help, if you follow the chart above you can see that the wetter the plant the lower the pH, I really think that is interesting. - Kudos and +reps to all those who joined in on the pH thing, :thumb: :thanks: :high-five::peace:. I'm sure I will reference it when I get my BPN order - 2 more days.:MoreNutes: Pic up soon, check back for more updates.:Hookah:

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

Okay, I have put up more pics taken last night, I also have pics from revamping the lst's with binder clips, I think for me it makes it more convienent and easier to use. White Widow Number 1 has lots of inner growth that really wants some light. I wish I had been brave enough to have topped or FIM'd this one while in veg. Just going to let that main stem continue to grow, hopefully it will give me a nice large cola bud.:cheesygrinsmiley: Think she is going to have a few cola buds from looking at how things are growing, have a look and let me know pls.

I am really psyched about the BPN nutes, should be here sometime tomorrow. Need to ask Corey if I should hold off on adding the new nutes if the pots are still really wet. How much I give them will depend on how dry they are at feeding time each day (their morning). I want to try to keep my ladies somewhere between 5 and 6 on my meter. Green range is 3 to 8 on my meter. I am anticipating give 1qt (32oz) each feeding and then seeing where that leads me. Hope the nutes help with the pH as well, it seems they can all stand to go up .5 to 1.0 more to be in the optimium uptake range. :MoreNutes:= :lot-o-toke: :peacetwo: Everyone, time to catch up on everyone elses journal entries and see what all is going on.

Looking at the pic above, what do you think about trimming the fan leaves, should I wait until day 21 of them being on 12 / 12? I have quite afew damaged leaves on the other White Widow too.

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

thanks for the ph info, i got a cheap ph tester but not sure its up to much it keeps showing my ph as between 7 and 8 no matter what i stick it in, the light meter works ok and moisture meter, guess thats what you get when you buy it from china for 99p

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

the problem with trimming in flower is the more you take off the bigger the leaves will get in the buds, the plant forces the other leaves to grow if you take to many off, you should be able to remove some of the leaves that are directly blocking bud sites but try not to take any of the biggest fan leaves off, just take off what you need to get all the light into all the bits you want, less is more sort of thing.

now for the ph problems or not problems, you dont measure ph before you feed the plants, this gives false readings, doing this and relying on that for your reading could mean your actually way of the actual ph reading, its always best to test the run off and then test the ph 24 to 48 hours later, the plants take in the nutes and put out stuff they dont want and this is what causes the ph to go up or down, so even if you ph everything perfect before you give it the plants, then this dont mean the soil ph will be perfect, just thought id let you know that mate, its something i learned recently that it dont matter to some extent what you put in as it wont be the same as the plant is putting out, for soil grows anyway, not sure if the same applies for hydro, it probably would as the plants are putting out what they need to get rid of and this causes the ph to change also the micro nutes in the compost do this all the time as well

Re: My First Grow - White Widow and Unknown From South Florida

Thanks donpaul:thumb: I was hoping to get some more input on that, I'm just looking at the way things are now so I can have something to compare later. The directions on the BPN feeding schedule mention pHing the nutes when they are mixed, and I want to have some indication of how to use the tools that I have, just in case I really need them. The directions on the meter I have say that the soil needs to be somewhat muddy wet to accurately measure the pH, so I know my readings are off, probally not by much though since I have wet pots at the present time.

As for trimming, I really don't want to do very much at all. Mainly afew toward the middle and bottom of WW Num 1.
Num_1_big.JPG

You can see what I mean. I still have another week or so before that magic 20 - 21 day mark. They'll have had at least one, probally two BPN nute feedings before then and I am hoping for some good growth from all of them by then, not tremendous just healthier. BPN :MoreNutes:
