Actually TS, I was thinking of stromatolites which, for 3+ billion years were the only atmospheric source of oxygen. Toxic excess iron was precipitated by this O2, and we mine these deposits today. Terra forming?
On a less grand scale, ships have sunk upon coral reefs. If the polyps were cognizant, would they have built there?
When the question is about human acts, my scale of harm includes acts detailed in Farley Mowatt's Sea of Slaughter, and more modern industrial-scale stripping of our oceans. I'm appalled by what government policy on energy/agriculture has caused to happen in the Missouri/Mississippi & Ohio rivers, and the land that they drain.
The balance of nature is dynamic, never static. Chemical warfare upon moth larvae is good.
