Ok, I've had 10+ years growing with a single 600w HPS (400w MH veg) in a 4'x2.5' handmade tent. I was growing in 3.5gal pots & using branded organic soil with bottled organic nutes. I usually grew two plants side by side & I'd say my regular weight was 6oz per plant, the biggest single plant was 9 or 10oz.
I've now swapped lighting to hand built panels fitted with Osram SSL80 LED's. My medium is now coco with a mixture of chemical & organic nutes which is evolving all the time & my pot size has increased to 5gal.
The 1st round I harvested really surprised me as it looked quite poor but once dried & weighed there was a lot more than I expected due to the density. Everyone says LED doesn't penetrate & I'd have to agree, look down at the bottom & not a lot gets through. HPS fools you into thinking you have penetration because it is a white light & it's reflecting off everything. The truth is, they don't penetrate past 18" of the canopy. I regularly had lots of fluffy popcorn shite down at the bottom with HPS & also fluffy lower colas/buds that had girth but no density. With LED I've seen very little of this, I've purposefully kept stuff in the dark to monitor it & it develops like it's getting light. The main colas I've noticed are much denser, more resinous & oily but the biggest difference is the taste. They taste amazing, I've been smoking weed for longer than I care to mention & I have never tasted buds that are quite so tasty. So the end product is much better in my opinion & there is scientific tests which show LED grown buds have higher THC, CBD, terpens etc. Now yield wise I've not hit 6oz yet as it's early days, my 1st round was just under 4oz per plant but I'm confident I can get around 5oz off a plant. If you want to compare power consumption, if I have two plants side by side under one panel it draws 140w & compare that with 680w draw off a 600w HPS you can see it's a no brainer.
