Melville's Doug's Varin Winter Grow

Here we go. It's looking like we're either dealing with some hybrid vigour on the crosses, or since they're out of the tent during the day they're warmer for their dark period. I'll give it a day or two, and if the Doug's Varin is still slower, I'll put her in a box or something for her dark period, keeping her warmer. Give that a few days to see if she speeds up. If not I'll just leave her in there.

All the crosses are working on their next set of leaves, and one is way larger. Lol, watch it be a male.

Teeniest tiniest next set of leaves coming in. I'm still going to try to keep her warmer in the dark period until I can get a heating pad set up. I need to get a new one, old one crapped out on me.

What is the temp withdrawal the mat.
Did you get one with a stat controller.
They can boil a pot if left to run uncontrolled. :Namaste:

I didn't have the mat under there yet, I was going to check it out before putting it under there. Didn't want a possible fire hazard. It looked like it was in good condition, but it didn't heat up when I plugged it in. Gave it an hour, and still nothing. When I get a new one I'll be getting one with a thermostat.
The temp can get down to 14 C, so that's now more than 10 degrees cooler than with the lights on. I may not need to get the new mat until spring, as it's just the root temps I'm worried about. When I put her in her next pot it'll be a one gallon fabric pot, so I may not need to worry.

That's going to be an issue for you.
They call it cold feet, which ladies don't like.
Root zone needs to be kept above 18c at all times.
Cold slows growth and proper nutrient uptake.
A new heat mat will work fine.
Just set it to 20 max.

It didn't slow down the plants too much the last couple of years, although I've only really been keeping track of lights off temps this year. And they were indica doms.
I also just spotted a problem with how I've been measuring temps, lol.
The thermometer/hygrometer is right on the floor of the tent, but the plants are up on pot stands. I'll move it up onto the stand, see what it says.

Good, maby it's higher.
Pot stands are great.
I understand it's been like that for a few grows.
And they probably were great.
It's all percentages.
Everything you do to improve your growing conditions improves your girls health and productivity.
And your harvest that percentage better.
We all try to make the conditions and inputs the best we can.
A little percentage at a time until they are perfect.
We may never get it perfect but we keep improving.
So every little adjustment and change improves things that little percentage more. :Namaste:
Temp,rh,lighting, nutrition, growing conditions can always be improved, we just do what we can.

Lol, well that explains things.
Just opened the tent to check and the thermometer is now reading 20 C!
All I did was move it up onto the pot stand. Just goes to show the importance of placement for sensors and thermometers. They're only useful if you're using them correctly.

See the temp difference from sitting on the floor.
It's not the best for them.

They weren't on the floor, and they definitely won't be now. If the temp starts getting low later on in winter, say late January or early February when it's coldest here, I'll insulate the bottom of the tent, and buy that heating pad.

Here's the family portrait. After dark the temp fell a little bit to 18.5 C, which is fine. I'll see if the lights on temp is affected by changing the placement of the thermometer in the morning when I move the crosses to the dark area.

All still growing. That HK cross still isn't slowing down. Hope I don't have to raise the rest of them to keep it from being stressed by the light.

Looking pretty good for (5 days?) being that cold 1/2 the day.
Looking forward to seeing your Doug's Varin in flower.
Today is the 6th day above ground. I'll be making sure she's warmer during the dark period. Looks like she wasn't getting down to 14, since she was on the pot stands from the beginning, but I'm planning to add insulation of some sort under the tent, or under the bottom liner. Some foam cushioning, or maybe some towels.
I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on the tent temps.

Okay, so the repositioning of the thermometer didn't really affect the lights on temps, got up to 26.6 C (not sure how much I trust in that ".6", lol).
She's still working on that second set of leaves, and is drinking well. I'll be able to water them all at lights on today.

This is the stage of growth that makes me the most impatient. I always think there's something I should do to help them speed up, even though I know I should just keep an eye on conditions and let her do her thing.

You got it up in a journal?
I just tried to find it in the links in your sig, but I don't think I did (unless it's the auto in front of the window).
I also didn't know the story behind your fire. I have to say you're a strong person to go through that and come out the other side with as much positivity and helpfulness as you show here.
Thank you.

Yup.
That was it,hehe.
@CanadianStoner lives down the rd and gave me an auto seed to pop.
As I can't set up lights in the house again ( fire risk ) I thought I'd put it in the window.
Closed the curtains last night and I think the poor little duck froze.
I'm going to build a fire proof grow room away from the house.
But never got the permitin time so it looks like spring now.
I'm still feeling a little off after being in the middle of the fire but getting better D
day by day.
Everyone here has helped keep me smiling.
Absolutely never would have made it through if it weren't for the huge support of everyone here.
@Rexer has been kind enough to donate his winning @Herbies Seeds from GJOTM to me.
They will be here soon I think.
Then I'll start a couple of them for something to do over the winter.
It's going to be a Great year. :thumb:
Thank you my friend.

Sorry to hear the seedling has passed:rip:
Poor lil bugger.

I'm thrilled that you're gonna have some solid genetics for this summer. So much time to get the plans laid for a epic summer grow. Your going to laugh when you see what I've got planned :cheesygrinsmiley:

I can't wait, you have a nice piece of property.
I can come in the spring and give you a hand.
As long as the holes aren't too deep I can dig them. :thumb:
I'm going to pop a couple Herbies and try them.
Probably going to fill the window by the spring.
Go @Herbies Seeds

Here's the evening update. For the first time I feel like I can see growth over the dark period.

I really should've changed the clock on that thing, but I don't really know why I set it in the first place.
