MedmanMike Celebrating 10th High-Brix Grow With Major Room & Equipment Upgrades

I don't even have to worry about distance anymore. As long as I keep 1-2 feet of headroom, everything thrives, even at 3-4 feet. Bottom buds are the same as top buds. :slide:

Panels are the shizz, folks. :bongrip:

Cool, didn't know if the light would penetrate like some others but apparently it does.
Oh is has plenty of penetration power. I was even putting week old seedlings down on the very bottom and they were still getting good light. I have propped up many of the lower growing strains just to try and maximize my light's strength.

Well, I have been tardy to the party of late! My apologies, but it's (FINALLY) springtime in Michigan and there's yard work to do, boat to prepare for launch, not to mention harvesting plants, etc., etc.!

This will be a multi-post update to keep things short.

Overall, the ladies are doing great. I ran into a minor problem with what I believe to be light bleaching, so I backed the lights off a bit. I was running the Spyder right at 6" and the Dorm Grow at 14". Both the minimum distance. That, along with backing off on the nutes a bit, seemed to help. New growth is green, which is always a good thing. LOL!

Here's some overall garden shots from two weeks ago.

You can also see in the last pic that the upper leaves are yellowing a bit. Most likely mid-bloom fade. I've been advised to give them a Super Drench (thanks Duggs!).

In the middle pic, the two outside plants on the left - either side of the line with a knot in it - have been harvested. More in the next post.

First plant harvested was a GreenOmatic from Greenhouse seeds. The plant was only 19 ½" tall but yielded 3.38 oz! I was stoked as it was such a short plant and was my largest harvest to date. Not bad for an Auto. Here's a pic.

A few days later, Tonic Ryder (#1) came down. This was a much larger plant compared to the GOM and it showed in the yield: 4.09 oz.

I have to say I was expecting much less yield with these autos.

Early on I was advised to not top nor transplant autos. I started seeds in 5 gal pots (one exception was the GOM which was in a 3 gal as I ran out of 5s) and left them alone. I did "dunk" them per Doc's instructions during veg and a couple of times in bloom until it became to much of a hassle to handle the bushes.

They have been extremely root bound for a while now. The root mass is so thick that there is virtually no soil on top. Normally I could poke my finger into the soil a couple of inches. Now, the finger goes nowhere! And, I have to give them a full watering every other day with a pint on top in between.

Another observation I've made is that the published flowering times for autos aren't very accurate. (Are photos any different??) The remaining plants are on day 70 from breaking ground and nowhere close to being done even though they were supposed to finish around day 63. Even the first two were way over published data. What's that line about fine wines? "no wine before its time" Applies here too, right? ;)

One final comment. I finally got some purple color in a plant! Not a big deal really, but I've always been little jealous of Doc's ability to put out the purple. These aren't the best of pics, but you get the idea.

Finally, one last comment/observation. This is mostly for those of you running the Spyder.

Are you seeing light burn issues at all? As I posted earlier, I've been intentionally running them right at 6" to see what they were capable of. As they got further into flower I began to see what appears to be light burn (at least as described on various sites). New growth coming in was effected too. Not sure if it was coincidence or not (I did back off on the quantity of nutes about the same time), but when I raised the lights a few inches, new growth came in green.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, especially those running the Spyder or other high powered LEDs positioned very close to the canopy.

Still loving this light!

PS - did you see that OSRAM has bought out Fluence, makers of the Spyder?

Hey Medman.....just curious....has that plant gotten the Recharge....hope so...that helps a lot with the mid bloom fade too...along with top dressing with ewc's.
Would have been awesome to see her in a bigger pot.....next time eh....!!

Yup, Recharge and EWC. Again, with the autos, I found it difficult as to when to apply. I may have applied to soon.

Larger pots next time - for sure! Normally do 7s, but seemed like most folks running autos did 5s.

A few of us with high-powered LED lighting are finding some issues, yes. The best way to tell is to look at the foliage farther from the light. That's what brought it to my attention. I saw that the parts of the plant getting the most light were also the palest.

And I've also noticed that as plants near finish, they do better with less light, and lower temps. We can overdrive photosynthesis with very strong light. Whenever I've backed the plants away from the light, they've responded positively.

Agreed. I've already made note that once flowering is in full gear to back off the lights. With these autos, lights were on 20 hrs. I cut that back and noticed an improvement with the color of the upper foliage too.
