Max's First Grow - Soil - LED - Painkiller XL

Watch for progression of the issue, take and post some more shots of the affected plant.

And most of all forget about treating them all the same, they are individuals with individual needs. Some may need more (or less) water, light, etc. than her sisters.

Thanks RTK,

I'm trying to think if I've buggered around with her in any way. Yesterday evening a few hours after the group photo the bruised tip started going orange and I thought nothing of it. Now it's spreading I'm a little worried. The picture doesn't capture the orange strip on the edge of a couple of leaves. I'll try to journal a better picture away from the LED's to help gauge progression.

It's much appreciated you took the time to reply.

Day 17 FIM

I decided to go for the FIM flavour of topping and gave XL#1 a half inch haircut.
IMG_40249.JPG

After all that worrying I thought "is that it?".

The snip blades were sterilised in a flame from the gas cooker before use. It goes without saying that I wash my hands well before going in the tent.

Note for fellow noobs; FIM is cutting off about 80% of the little new growth (not 80% of the whole plant - that would be silly). There are good articles on FIM on this site if you need to read more.

Fingers crossed she likes her new 'do' and rewards me with up to 4 new branches. Cutting bits off feels brutal but they like a bit of tough love. If I had the facilities I'd clone her at some point, but alas I don't have a second tent and lights.

Hey Max

Do you know how that technique got the name FIM and what FIM stands for. It was developed by a grower who was trying to top his plant when he missed and cut the top 80% of the top and new side growth, then yelled "Fuck I Missed"... Funny but a true story.

Ok, I've remembered something really really stupid from the other day when my head was up my arse (a very English saying that means "extremely distracted"). I'm not sure if I've just compounded the mistake but here goes.. kill or cure.

When I transplanted the girls I had an excessively strong seaweed solution in a container. Instead of binning it I poured it around the edge of XL#1 (this is the point you say "what the actual fuck?!?"), but it's true, I did. Looking back I thought that with it being a 5 gallon pot and all the roots being in the middle, there's no way it would cause problems and it would be diluted by the soil and subsequent waterings before the roots got there. Actually, scratch that. I wasn't thinking at all at the time, or if I was my brain patterns wouldn't be recognisable to sane people.

So there we have cock-up number one, possibly giving rise to the orange edge leaves issue.

Having remembered this snippet I figured I should flush it out a bit. I've put 5 gallons of water through the pot, which is currently sat in the bath draining. When she goes back in the tent I'll increase the airflow to dry out the pot.

I'm not quite sure how it'll dry out considering it's a youngling in a mega size pot, so it's certainly not going to dry out the soil by drinking it through the roots.

Only time will tell if this plant will survive my care. I feel I shouldn't be allowed near the tent during head-fuck moments.

Can I enter the contest for IOTM now (idiot of the month). I'm sure to win. Be gentle with your comments. Saying that nobody is capable of whipping me like I do myself.

If it is in a 5 gallon pot you could easily flush it again, I believe they reccommend a flush of 3 times the pot size.

Then again, it mght be a good time to just downsize the pot, fresh soil and everything.???

All newb fu*k ups, we all do it. I still class my self as a real newb after a yr of growing. I'm a bit bit medicated at the mo so I/m going to have to come back & read the posts again.
1. Topping, will put your girls back but i love it as it gives you bushier plants. Do it right n it will give u better yields..BObrown will disagree lol. Awesome grower if u ain't read his journals its a must.
2. your in soil, don't panic, its much more forgiving than coco or hydro. Leave ur pots to dry out NOW...
U got some peeps here to help u out, OG knows what he's talking about.. As I said before, don't panic...Less is more, we all have to learn somewhere & ur in the right place... Peace Out

The temptation is strong but as always things are on order. Last night I ordered some 1 gallon and 5 gallon smart pots, the fabric things. Apparently it's harder to overwater them.

Hurrah for medication. I'm having a very high pain day today and I'm down to 2 x 30mg codeine a day. This is from 14 a day at the start of December. I did a little FIM (thanks OlderGrower for explaining the origin of the name). I can't medicate herbally until I've grown some high CBD meds. This looks less likely each day.

So, here's where we're at... the extractor has been running all night and is still on. Until now I've used it sporadically, relying on my constant peeping Tom act with the girls to change the air. With the extractor running so much I've had to turn the heater up a little. Now getting desperate for the heat & RH monitor to arrive. It's been a month already. I may just buy one from the UK and have a spare when the slow boat from China carrying my probe arrives in the UK.

Unbelievably the soil from the original pot is bone dry whilst surrounded by the sodden, flushed soil. I suspect the roots poked into the swamp and did a u-turn back into the original soil. A couple of leaf tips are getting crispy and quite frankly I'm not sure XL#1 is going to survive. BB#1 is going from strength to strength, which is nice but I'm not interested in a low CBD strain for myself. Son & heir has his eye on that one. She smells gorgeous and it's just like opening a bag from a dealer when I open the tent (another reason to leave the fan on).

I'm at a complete loss on how to deal with XL#1. Down potting with fresh soil sounds good but I don't have a 1 gallon pot yet. The urge to say "fuck it" and give up is strong, but that's my excess pain talking. Not having a good day. But then I think where I'd be if the Painkiller XL delivers.

Hopefully I'll recover my joie de soon and resign myself to losing another PK-XL. At the very least I've learned a few lessons along the way and a second grow will be far better. Let's not throw in the towel just yet. Let's see where this leads us.

Here endeth today's wibble from Headroom Towers.

Hey Max, you sound frustrated...DON'T give up on PKXL#1 yet!
Can't you find an old flower pot or something (even a bowl!) and dig that girl out and put her in fresh/dry soil temporarily? Better to cut a few roots that kill them all.
I'm here to tell you this strain is pretty darned hardy so I would much rather see you do something like that.
Give it a go.. It will be worth it in the end. I just sampled mine again yesterday it "IS" what we are looking for:high-five:

(By the way, I use the cloth smart pots too)

Hi Beav,

Just what I needed to hear thanks. As for the pots - I don't do any other gardening so everything I have I bought for this grow. I'll see if the folks have a 1 gallon flower pot I can borrow.

Cheers

By the way Max, no need to "over engineer" the pot thing.... it might look tacky but I'd be tempted to use anything that will hold good soil until your cloth pots get there. Haven't you got an empty milk jug or something you could just cut the top off of to use temporarily? If you look through your recycling bin there's gotta be something in there :-)
It sounds like you figured out the problem.... now lets fix it.:thumb:

Cheers guys,

I decanted my hemp protein powder out of a huge container, cut the top off, drilled some holes and re-potted with fresh soil. I think I managed to keep most of the roots intact.

You may have saved her!

Here she is in possibly the most appropriate DIY pot ever
IMG_40497.JPG

Let's see if she copes with the shock and the fresh soil in her new home.

Cheers Krypt,

I am on board with the light watering thing now, but felt I had no choice after zapping XL#1 with concentrated seaweed extract. To counteract this I flushed the pot, but the pot was too large for that plant, so she had no chance to drink all that water. Now she's in a hemp container with holes drilled in and filled with fresh soil. She's not getting water until tomorrow :-)

Good job Max! :bravo:
I hate to be a pest "but" do you feel that she has been flushed out good enough? What I mean is, when you flushed her, did you hit the entire area that you just transplanted pretty good and not just around the edges? If not, when you water to settle her into the new soil you might want to hit it just a lil bit heavier to get more runoff. Just to give you an idesa, and I probably went overboard, but when I had problems with my PX-XL in the 5 gallon pot I flushed with 20 gallons of pH'd water. It was a PITA but I got her back on track and she went on to give me close to 3 ounces plus some very healthy clones.

I think you are going to be happy with your decision to be pro-active, at least I hope so.

Now maybe you can take the rest of the day off and go find a new car:thumb:
