You will find some polite disagreement on lotions vs oils vs butter for pain relief. Magnus' feeling (which I have found to be accurate) is that any solidifiers (beeswax, soy wax, shea butter, etc.) have the ultimate effect of lowering the absorption of cannabinoids into the skin. It makes logical sense to me, and I have found that my oil/beeswax salve provides less pain relief (and stains clothes more readily) than the straight oil which is quickly absorbed.
So I use just infused oil for pain. I use the salve for other things where I want a layer of something to stay on the skin, like for dry patches or welts.
Heya HashGirl...long time no see! Maybe the cream created an insulating barrier between your skin and the cold of the A/C. Also it might provide a constant infusion of THC into the nerves (though based on how I see it, at a lower concentration ). I didn't mean to suggest that there was no place in the arsenal for the lotions and creams. I just find that the oil works fastest and is less likely to stain my shirts.Evening, Shed.
I put some of my Hash Plant oil in a roller bottle and used it over and over again on the train this weekend when the A/C was blasting on me and my left knee was achy. I was also popping CB Dutch Treat capsules like candy but the A/C was relentless on my knee when asking the steward (?) about it and not getting a remedy, I had to go dig in my backpack for my fleece and my socks to wear until arrival I was so cold. So what I wanted to say was that on the way home, I packed my Hash Plant cream in my seat bag and used it once on my knee and it was fine for the rest of the trip. So, I'm not sure why but that's my input to this conversation.
Howdy, derby!

I remember watching a video about Mexican women who soak the cannabis in isopropyl alcohol and rub it on their joints for pain, so you have the same thing going on with Vodka! Of course isopropyl alcohol has a higher proof than vodka (and is cheaper than cheap vodka as well) so it might be even better in terms of melting the trichomes into the solution.Hmmmmm
cheers shed,, your post echoes some issues i am having with the cream/oils at the moment
the beeswax cream, regardless if the beeswax inhibits cannabinoid penetration or not, the wax residue makes a mess everywhere,, for me, who uses this for my hands,, it literally gets everywhere
major issue right there
so infused oil,, penetrates better,, but,, alas,, still gets residue everywhere.
i use this oil on my hands several times a day and simply do not have time to wait for it all to be absorbed
so,, my solution, up to this point has been a cannabis tincture,, with vodka,, tho my last one was jack daniels,, haha
now,, i know most use tinctures for gettin high, i think,, but i have been trying them for pain relief,, just like oils or creams
however,, tho the tinctures work,, very well in fact,, the alcohol dissipates and evaporates very quicky,, which is exactly the trait i have been looking for
however,, i have been searching for a way to add a bit of infused oil into the tincture,, to give the concoction a bit of staying power, if ya know what i mean,, just a bit of oil in there to soften me hands and last a bit longer on my hands
but i can not figure how to do it,, the tincture simply will not accept the grapeseed oil, as that is what my oil mixture is
MMy thinking was that alcohol absorbs the oil in cannabis,, so alcohol will also absorb grapeseed oil,, but no, it does not
CCurious what ideas are out there and in here
Cannabis for pain control,, you betch

In terms of what oil might dissipate into the alcohol, I would just try a few different oils in vodka (don't waste the tincture for these experiments!) and shake well. You might find that no oil and alcohol will mix, and all you can do is shake really well before you apply it. Still, any oil is going to leave a residue.
Oh, another thought is whatever oil you do end up using, there's really no need to go with infused oil since the alcohol is already loaded with cannabinoids. Just add some regular oil to get to the consistency you are looking for.
@nivek - I use my pain cream on my hands, too and since I type for a living, I needed something else so I bought some arthritis gloves from Amazon, which help with my cream but also works to keep my hands less achy and warmer.
Interesting point lazyfish. I hadn't considered how much iso might get absorbed. If you're just rubbing it into your knees you're probably safe (after all, most of us clean our hands with it after trimming!), but ethanol would be safer for more extensive contact or for those with kidney deficiencies. That would make Everclear 151 similar to 70% iso in strength. And 151 you can buy in California .I don't think isopropyl alcohol is healthy to put on your skin. Ethanol is not so bad because our bodies can metabolize it without killing your liver!
I was thinking maybe glycerin might help thicken up an ethanol solution.
Wonderful thread. I just found it!!!
Cheers,
friends,, if one reads the side of an iso alc bottle
should just take a pic, but,,
apply as required,, used as a solvent, antiseptic and as a basis for an iso alc rub. apply full strength to affected areas and rub in
and that is 99%
add a bit o cannabinoids and voila?? the perfect tincture
cept it is too flammable,, which trumps everything else
love the glycerin idea,, what i am doing now is mixing a bit of oil into the tincture and shaking when using,, the best solution so far
cheers
