I like to think there needs to be some wiggle room to get a feel for your plant, essentially yes tie down the mainstem.
I dont think it is complicated or set in stone
after doing it this grow lol. I really worked mine almost daily until they took off at "the stretch" and then it was almost impossible to keep up. They are growing stronger too and at a point they just sort of hold their position and your focus shifts to high alert for mold and other fall elements outdoors. I noticed the growth was pulling my clips with it.
I did ask in that thread when the humidity was almost unbareable what was next...it was just keep an eye on them.
There are journals on here of perfection, fails and everything in between. Go for it! Personally, for me, it's the patience to fight flippin' aphids and rain without throwing myself on the ground like a 3 year old
