LoveThyPit's First Grow 2013

So this is my first grow and of course my first Journal, I will do my best to provide all the information needed and pics along the way. I am hoping for thoughts and suggestions along the way that will aide in a successful grow :thumb:

The Seeds:

1x White Widow x Big bud feminized
I am unsure of the specifics on this seed or its strain, sorry

1x "The Doctor" by Green House Seeds
This is an Indica that combines Great White Shark, South Indian, and Super Skunk according to the data.

I got my seeds from Herbies and I must say they blew me away! Pricing seemed good, customer service was spot on and delivery was fantastic! Order shipped on a Thursday and was at my door on Monday! Very stealthy, definitely not their first rodeo lol.

Germinating

This is my first attempt at germinating seeds in water ONLY. I have tried the paper towel method and had some success but wasn't a fan of having to try and keep the towel moist and didnt like the taproots getting stuck to the paper towel. For this germinating attempt I have a .5 gallon beta fish tank with a water heater keeping the water around 75-80 degrees F. The White Widow is in shot glass #14 and the DR. is in shot glass #1. The white Widow just cracked this morning after 36 hrs and will hit soil tonight. The DR will get another 12 hrs then will most likely be put into soil also.

Soil

Lots of options out there and a lot to learn so I'm trying to go with the KISS method the best I can. I am using the MG seedling soil in the .3 gallon airpots for I am thinking 2 weeks? Then will transfer to the 2 gallon airpots and use the FFOF soil. My thoughts are that the FFOF is too strong of nutes for seedlings hence why I am starting with the MG. Once I transfer to the 2 gallon pots with the FFOF I am hoping to get a month before the soil is lacking too much nutrients. At that point I will be looking for advice or suggestions on what I may want to use to "jazz up" the soil.

The setup

I am using a 3x3x6'8" grow tent in the corner of the basement with a dehumidifier in use. I will be keeping an eye on temperature and humidity in the area, right now without the lights on I am at approx 65 degrees and 53% humidity inside the tent. Obviously I am using a digital thermometer/humidistat, I have a 6 inch fan for circulation within the tent. I am using a topled 192x3w panel (LED) for this grow and will start with an 18hr 6hr cycle then switch to 12hr 12hr. I have two 4 inch duct fans one for intake and the other for exhaust, I have the exhaust set up to run into my sewer (not shown in these pics). Other than the usual timers and outlets I believe thats everything.

Any input or thoughts?

subscribed. when I first started growing I used Miracle Gro potting soil and my plants did not do well in it. I would not use the Miracle Gro potting soil, instead I would use peat moss, perlite and vermiculite.

You may want to straighten out the duct work some it really cuts down on the CFM whit all the bends. Also you may want to come up with a better way to mount your electrical those mountings don't look very safe.

all you need now are some seedlings LOL:peace::thumb:

Thanks Harley, yes the bends shown in that exhaust duct isnt the final product. I have them run into my sewer line but I have them disconnected for the time being until I have the plants in the room. I dont run the fans when the room is empty and I don't want any sewer smells getting into the tent. As far as the mountings for the electrical on the fans, believe it or not those boxes were wired up by an electrician lol.

KingJohnC , Thanks for the suggestion :) I am only using the MG seedling soil for the first 2 or 3 weeks because the nute content is low. I just want to get the roots started in them and then plan to switch to the ocean forest, I have heard that the ocean forest is too strong for seedlings though.

If you have not planted in that Miracle Grow ... Don't!!!

seedlings are very sensitive and MG puts a hurt on 'em

I hate to suggest their products but Fox Farms Happy Frog is awesome. You can even start clones in it. Ocean Forest is too hot for most strains... I would take it back and trade it for Happy Frog.

Sorry I started out with this information but I want to see you do well!

Looks like a great space to turn green :cheesygrinsmiley:

oh man really? I thought I have been reading good things about the ocean forest :(

Personally I prefer ProMix (BX), It's light, fluffy and holds H20 really well. It's really good for seedlings and young plants, I do have to add a lot more fertilizer but that is fine with me, I like the control.

Congrats on getting started growing LTP. Youre gonna get tons of suggestions on what to do or not to do and will have to figure out what works best for you. I have had good results with the FFOF others dont like it. It is hard on seedlings and young clones but what I did was mix some Coco and perlite into it. My outdoor plants are growing in this mix right now. Ive recently made the switch to Roots Organic Soil because it was recommended for the Super Soil Im now trying out and its made locally.

My suggestion would be to get some Coco and use that to start your seedlings and then go into the FFOF after you mix in a bit of Coco with that.

One thing I have to say is DO NOT add nutes to FFOF until you see that your plants are in need cuz I completely screwed up my first round of plants in straight FFOF by feeding too soon. If you cut it with Coco that time will come sooner.

Good Luck and Enjoy

LTP, I was originally going to pot in FFOF. I had a big bag of it. What I decided to do was add some of it to a more neutral medium. I mixed it with Sunshine Mix #4 - the one without aggregate (yellow label.) I did around 25% FFOF, 65% SM#4, 10% perlite. It has worked really well. The Sunshine Mix is not nutrient dense. I ended up with way more soil than I needed, but it's in a big bin and will be kept moist and cooking until I'm ready for it.

That Miracle Grow seedling mix should work fine for sprouting. It's a very light soil just for tiny babies. It isn't normal Miracle Grow soil.

Oh! I should add that I sprouted two White Panther seeds right in that mix. Popped the seeds in moist medium. The plants have grown nicely with no sign of stress or deficiency.

Thanks for following along guys! The White Widow hit the soil last night, yes its the miracle grow seedling soil. But as I said it has low nute content and should not harm the seedlings. I plan on letting them veg in that soil for 2 or 3 weeks then upsizing the pot and using the FFOF. I plan on letting them go in the FFOF for at least a month before even considering nutes (unless the girls tell me otherwise). The DR. should be in soil tonight.

Miracle grow soils are mixed in thousand pound batches that circulate the soil and chemicls and additives are dumped in. Their quality control standards are near non-existent. The actual nutrient content varys greatly from batch to batch. So looks like you won a round of Russian Roulette so to speak. Plants look good!

I just bought the TopLED 48x3w to help my current grow and do a single plant for my next grow. Definitely gonna follow along with you on this one, see how your unit is doing. Did yours come with the hooks and everything for hanging? I'll probably be in week 5 or 6 of flower in my CFL grow by the time my unit arrives, but hopefully it'll help add some to the final bit of flowering. Good luck to ya!

Yes the light does come with some included hanging accessories, but to be honest I didnt love the setup so I bought some ratchet hangers. If you look at the light in the pictures you can see how I have it rigged up.
