Lost In The Fog

I read about people reusing the perlite, but it seems they grow in only that (hempy an the like). I have some used soil with quite a bit of perlite, but not sure how one separate it from the soil... is that even a thing?

Hempy fo sure... Tried that one as well for a while but as usually with my projects I never have patience to wait for all things to settle before I start thinking in other ways to do things. When I tried this I ran hempy style growing with regular soil nuting and this was far too lean for them.

As Penny said its very difficult next to impossible to separate Perlite from the soil if its mixed in, if you can't find any Perlite magnet of some sort... Mercury, Cyanide... maybe... :laughtwo:

I got a tip for another medium having the same properties I got here when researching, its probably cheaper also Kitty-Litter sand. Downside of that is its weight...

But if you still want to continue just to run in soil I would stick to clay pebbles, much easier to separate for washing and handling the stuff. Plants don't care...

:blunt:

Ah yes, that Alchemic Perlite Magnet... a new hit with all grow shops - better get to work on that one! :laughtwo:

I did have a go at shaking and dry-reverse-gold-washing, but it didn't work. There are parts of the soil that are as light as the perilte and with it's high friction surface structure, the perlite grains seems to just mix evenly with the soil no matter what you do.
The upside of that is that perlite mixes very easily with soil

I found that pumice is twice the price of perlite around here. The cheap locally available option is the clay pebbles. I'll be crushing them to expose more of the porous interior though, so probably not so easy to reuse that either, but that's not critical since its' cheap and readily available.

Perlite floats

But so does bark, wood, smaller organic particles, and other lightweight unnecessary extraneous material polluting the perlite. :laughtwo:

It's not that bad idea anyway Felipe if the medium is treated in hot water it should take care of most possible unwanted pests, if it still will end up in new soil it doesn't matter if its not 100% only Perlite either?

Good point!

So stirring the soil in water might leave a layer of floating perlite that's easily scooped up, perhaps?

Sure it should...! I never tried cleaning it from soil, just separate it from clay pebbles and this was done with a larger sift 1x1cm and then washed in a finer sift with water just straining through then dried.

Downside of that is that it clumps when wet, which is the exact opposite of what you're looking to do! Most kitty litter is sodium bentonite clay.

Yeah you are right about that... Tip was given to me by PGR, Purple Gun Rack -deranged LED fanatic from Christiania Denmark :laughtwo: , remember him?

Indeed! I heat my used perlite to at least 160F in hot water to recycle it.

This is NOT one of CraZy's stronger sides...

Took delivery of the new motherboard for the printer and started migrating to it...
Man this is much more advanced than the original board, old to the left and new to the right.

Now what's left is flashing a new kernel to the new board....
Hopefully I will be printing again this evening.... :laughtwo:

Other news...
Ginza and dad have put up a custom made tv mount in the bedroom for this winter's late night Gold Rush watching...

She's having her period now and is very demanding with her routines and cuddle :)

No binaries ready to flash? That's brutal!

LoL, Noo this is a completely DIY upgrade. The code is fairly simple to change between all boards and chip sets there are but it takes some time and on top of all it seems like my LCD also gave up when the board was shorted. I connected the 10 wires in all thinkable configurations there are I think this might have something to do with Schrödingers dead cat again... It's alive but at the same time dead....

But now I have a compiled binary on the board!

Please excuse the intrusion, as we help one of our valued Sponsors.

Sierra Natural Science has been a 420 Mag Sponsor for over a decade, and we finally talked them into getting active in the forums. Please show them around, subscribe and promote this thread and show them how much we truly appreciate them.

Meanwhile, if anyone has any pest or disease control questions for SNS, please let them know in their thread.

Has anyone used SNS before and can share your experience in the thread above? :thanks:

No updates on the printer... still waiting for a new TFT module for it, seems impossible to get that old LCD working on this motherboard. Creality have certainly taken the steps to make it almost impossible for users to migrate to other motherboards with their parts. Hopefully it will arrive before weekend but with my luck PostNord will probably leave it for delivery until next week....

A bummer that.

Are you saying you can employ motherboards from other manufacturers, as in steppers, heaters, nozzles, sensors etc being fairly standard in driver requirements and/or the boards being highly configurable to make this possible?

Yes, this board makes almost everything possible with Marlin2 environment (software). Every pin on that board is configurable no matter if its an digital/analog output/input so it makes this highly adaptable to what ever steppers or sensors used. There are also many breakout boards for equipment drawing more current or requiring higher voltage than the standard 24V psu is putting out.

One thing I noticed already just by calibrating with commands over USB is that motors and movement is so much more quiet and smooth compared to the slamming hard movement the standard board was giving. So I have great expectations to some better print quality with this setup. I'm also building a acrylic enclosure for the whole printer to sit in, I most recently experienced allergies to the fumes emitted from PLA when hitting glass transition state. But there is also another advantage with an enclosure and that is controllable ambient temp when printing with more exotic filaments like ABS, Carbon fiber and such filaments requiring higher ambient temp than room temp.

Well will keep you updated on my adventures with this...! Stay tuned, plants are not forgotten... any day now. LoL

CraZy is officially printing again! Got everything running now like its meant to run and on Friday the 13th of all days so guess this is my new lucky number. LoL

This conversion have been long and hard but with great sacrifices comes great success and I wont be wrong if I would say this project has taken almost two weeks to get up and running.

What's been bugging me for the last week was a simple comma sign "," this made me believe a value was set to a totally different value than it actually was declared as in the code.
