Gaby (Herbies Seeds Gorilla Glue #4 Auto)
Date: 12/13/23 Day# 44 (Flower day# 18)
Medium: 5G SIP Bucket with FFHF & Dynomyco
Nutrients: Nutrients: MC Blend (5gMC+1gMgN+.33BE - 148-50-182,114,64,51)

Today I added another fan in the annex, a tower fan. You can never have too much wind, and I'm hoping it will give those fungus gnats fits. I also cleaned up the lowers a little more.

Gaby is just about done filling in the net. On day# 18 of flower, she may be nearly done stretching. That's fine with me, she's the perfect size for this tent. And she is building really beautiful buds :)

You really have a knack, a magic touch LKA. My autos are the same age as Gaby and they are the kind that didn't stretch! Nothing I do seems to make a difference. It seems to be luck and genetics that make the difference in my grows. Having said that I do grow in los and it is evident to me that synthetics generally produce the bigger plants. Do you ever get small ones?

Thanks Carmen. So far my smallest auto was a Gelato that I gave too many nutrients in veg, she still ended up with over 5oz. Starting in a 4" pot and weighing it to know when to water is the biggest difference. The first 30 days are so critical for autos, and you cannot get the most out of them by putting them in their 'forever' pot as most people do.

As for organic vs. synthetics... My grows are completely organic until they go to flower. FFHF soil + Geoflora is all they get during veg. So, I absolutely believe I could get the same size plant organically. However, top-dressing in a SIP is a pain so I just use the synthetics in flower.

Thanks LKA,
Thanks for explaining the nutes situation. It makes sense that you do this. It must be quite tricky to begin with, until you dial it in.
I will keep on persevering with the first 30 days :) I know I overwatered my current plants when they were in their first pots. The weighing is actually a really good idea. Let's hope I remember that next round.

== Base Nutrient Change ==
I'm at a crossroads with nutrients right now. I started off using off-the-shelf nutrients and had few problems. I'd get some tip burn occasionally before dialing it back. I started with Advanced Nutrients and they were OK, but way too expensive and too many products needed. I did several grows with Prescription Blend and loved them, really easy to use and beautiful plants. Remo worked out really well until it didn't. I fried one plant and scaled way back... to far back at first. Now I use my MC based nutrients all through flower. I've found it works great for the first 20-25 days. Then I start getting a few deficiencies, nothing too bad. I haven't harvested a healthy-looking auto in a while, though, as they fade fast toward the end. I feel that what I am using is on the low end of what is needed.

Although I have read some studies showing no need for increased P/K or decreased N in flower, how do I explain how all cannabis nutrient lines scaling up P/K in flower, especially weeks 4-6? Why would they recommend this if not needed? Does this explain why my plants are fading during this time?

Last weekend I entered Remo & PB into Hydrobuddy and calculated the recommended dosages of each for each stage of flower. Remo seems way too high, with 222N & 441K at the peak of flower! PB isn't too far from what I'm feeding now. A bit lower in N and higher in everything else, but not too far. I decided to use PB as my new targets.

My 'base' nutrients right now is MC Mix1. I'm still deciding between mix# 2 or 3. I like Mix# 2 for hydro because it has the Bud Explosion as the P/K boost. It's not too different from what I'm running now. Mix# 3 is really close to PB Wk1 and looks like a great flower base. It has Sweet Candy to bump up the P/K/Mg/S. I can scale up either one with Purpinator if needed. I have some I need to use up, and it's easy to measure and use.

Nutrient Comparison.png
KEY: MC=Megacrop 1-part, PB=Prescription Blend, MgN=Magnesium Nitrate, BE=Bud Explosion, MgS=Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom), SC=Sweet Candy, Purp=Purpinator.

Right now I'm leaning toward mix# 3 for the autos, especially since I'll be starting on day# 20 of flower. I'll mix some up and start Gaby on it tomorrow. She's coming into the end of the stretch and into the part of flower I usually start to have problems. It should be easy to spot any issues on her. Except for a few LST marks on a couple of leaves, she's still looking nearly flawless :)

From what I've read (assuming I understood it correctly) the studies suggested 60mg/litre K produced higher cannabinoids, but the plant got ugly.
100mg/litre, produced slightly lower cannabinoids, but a healthier plant at harvest.
The plants grown between 120-240mg/litre of K had no signs of deficiency or excess, and had lower cannabinoids.
Keep in mind that the cannabinoid difference was (IIRC) ~10-20%, so for a strain that averages 20% THC, that would be about 2-4%.

Marketing and pseudo-science?
IDK. It would seem easier to market the same schedule all the way through flower, and I think they do quite a bit of research. Plus I've seen my own plants need more Ca/K starting in week# 3 of flower.
I liked the PB nutes but never touched the Big Data as it ran the K and P numbers higher than I wanted. I left it at 5-10-10-5-1-5 which put me at 132-51-204, Ca 107, Mg 67, S 82.
I ran both soil and hydro plants with PB at 100% with little/no problems. It's a learning experience, though, so I'll keep this bookmarked for your "I told you so" ;)

I bump my numbers across the board shortly after stretch as well.
Oh, so now we're getting into your secret numbers ;) Do you have different targets for different times during flower or do you just let the plant tell you when it needs more/less?

Easier to market, sure.
Assuming your target audience doesn't have an established practice which is so ingrained they won't change it based on new evidence.
As for research, due to the recent end to prohibition the results are starting to make their way out to the public, and they're meeting some resistance.

I hear what you're saying Mel. Still, my experience is telling me they need more in weeks 3-6. Maybe I'm just on the low end overall. We'll see.

Sorry if it came across like I was trying to push you, there's as many ways to grow as there are growers.

Pinky (Herbies Seeds Bubblegum Auto)
Date: 12/18/23 Day# 104 Fday# 73
Medium: 5G SIP Bucket with FFHF & Dynomyco
Nutrients: Water Only

I meant to post this in Friday but then things got busy. Had a great weekend with family and absolutely no time to journal :( And it only gets busier this week!

Pinky is still hanging in there. Last week I decided to get rid of all of her dead and dying leaves. Some of them just fell right off, others needed a little pinching. She looks like a new lady!

She's still just getting plain water, with an occasional boost of Sweet Candy. I think she has received her last watering, though.
Pinky Tracker.png
I think she's just about ready to be harvested. Or maybe, she should have been harvested a while ago? I'm starting to see some amber trics, although there are still a few clears.

I'm also seeing a LOT of nanners as she struggles to make seeds. All of her branches that aren't tied up are sagging, and she smells incredible!

Tonight we'll starting chopping, one branch at a time. We'll probably spread it over several evenings, so no flop pics (it's no fun having to tie her back up). Time to get this lady in the drying closet :)

Medium: 5G SIP Bucket with FFHF & Dynomyco
Nutrients: Nutrients: MC Blend (5.5MC+1SC+.5MgS - 131N-64P-232K-124Ca-61Mg-83S)

I'm feeding Gaby twice every day. I fill her res in the morning, up to 3 liters. Then before lights-out I give her another two liters. Since I moved to the new mix I'm not adding anything else, besides the occasional Great White.
Gaby Tracker.png
The @VIVOSUN VSF6450 is @ 50% on a 18/6 schedule giving her 40-45 DLI across the canopy and the SGS is keeping the VPD right at 1.2. Other than feeding her I'm just leaving her alone to build. And she's doing a great job :)
