LJFM White Widow Grow

LJ,

If you let this lady grow to full maturity, I would think you'd get about an ounce at harvest time. I grew a WW in my last grow and it was sweet. It's impossible to take a picture of a WW when it's in flower with it looking like someone sprinkled icing sugar on it.

Don't be in hurry to harvest the plant. These plants really fatten up in the last few weeks of flowering. I let mine stay in flower for 12 weeks! But honestly, 10 weeks should be optimal. Just keep an eye on trichome development. What type of high do you prefer, by the way?

A trippy "dance with your dog," stone or

A Cheech and Chong "Dave's Not Here!" couch lock?

By the way, I can't recall, how long has she been in flower?

P. S. Love the lady bugs! They're like little flying Volkswagon Beetles!

Thanks for stopping by Oregon.

ggrant, I'm looking for more of a cerebral "up" high. So I will be harvesting with mostly cloudy trichs. I do like a good body buzz though so I will probably be looking for a ratio of 75/25% Cloudy/Amber. I may even harvest some early and let some go longer just to see the difference.

At any rate my led light microscope came today and it is awesome, it really zooms in so I'll get a really good idea of how ripe she's getting.

She started in flower Dec 8th so going into her 29th day right now.

Oh ggrant I also wanted to ask you what you did for nutes on your WW. Most everything I've read about it says that it likes moderate nutrients and water. I've just been watering it when the soil gets dry which is about every other day and I haven't given her any nutrients for a couple of weeks now but i think it's time to get some bloom nutes in there so she'll really fluff those buds out for me.

I'll be back on tonight for a picture update.

Looking good ljfm, ive seen u bounce back from some tough spots nicely and your plants look pretty good too. Well i noticed your question about your hairs and i saw in a pic one nug had red hairs and one had all yellow right next to it. Im not sure what that means but in my grow i touched my hairs against my HPS and they burnt and within a week they healed and grew new ones so if theres something wrong your plants should bounce back nicely

Hey Chiefin thanks for stopping by. Yeah she's been through some stuff but she seems to be doing just fine.

The ladybugs seem to be doing their job. I still see the occasional mite but it takes a while for all the eggs to cycle out and everything.

I mixed up a nute batch: 1/4 tsp each of GH Flora Nova Bloom,GH Liquid Kool Bloom, AN Bud Candy, and Molasses per gallon of water. Starting off with just a little bit to see how she responds, it's a pretty potent mix.

Nice little bush

She seems to really be filling out, hopefully even more so with the new nutes.

Wow LJ,

You definitely need to fertilize this gal. I just finished fertilizing mine tonight. I started off fertilizing once every seven days when in veg, and switched to about once every five days in flower.

I'm surprised you haven't run into any nutrient deficiencies. When I was growing my WW (along with four other strains), I ran out of flowering nutrients and starting skimping on fertilizer and using vegetative rather than flowering nutrients. All my plants were sickly looking and starting exhibiting several mineral deficiencies.

After I finally got the right nutrients and got back to a regular schedule of fertilization, the entire crop bounced back.

The nutrients I use are from Advanced Nutrients. I use two of their flowering products:

Nirvana which is a bloom enhancer and
Iguana Juice which is a 4-3-6 blend of NPK.

Don't ask me why I use these. A master grower friend set me up and told me everything to buy. He's been out of town for six months and I should ask him why he likes these.

Oh, I occasionally use

Bud Candy which is also made by Advanced Nutrients.
The blurb says it makes your buds taste like "Cotton Candy!"

I've seen a lot of people rave about Fox Nutrients. You might check them out.
What are you using as a fertilizer now?

Not sure how knowlegeable you are about nutrients, so I apologize if you already know this.

For the vegetative cycle, you should use a nutrient mix that leans more heavily towards Nitrogen for leaf production. For flowering, you use one that leans more towards Potassium. If you're getting real nutrients, like from one of the manufacturers above, they will have products for each of the two phases.

If you're buying fertilizers at a garden store, I would say I was growing tomatoes and ask for a fertilizer that's good for the flowering (fruiting) phase. After all, most plants have similar needs. First grow big real fast, then produce flowers and seeds. Something that will grow a big juicy tomato will also grow some nice buds.

Use Blackstrap Molasses for both vegetation and flowering. I use one tsp per gallon. I've heard that some people use 3 tbsps per gallon for the final phase of flowering! (That's 9 times the amount I use!).

And thanks for the info. I had read about what plants needed in different cycles before but I didn't really commit it to memory so thanks for that! I'll check out some different full nutrient systems when I get my next grow going. I'm going to try and get a perpetual system going with several smaller plants harvesting every few weeks now that I have two boxes. My buddy that gave me this widow also has Superman, Apollo, Vale, and Jack the Ripper clones for sale so I might start that once the WW is a little farther along. I'm planning on moving soon to a place where I can finally have a real grow room and start ordering some seeds and really get growing. I can't wait. But this WW is a good enough project to keep me going for now. Almost 4:20 and I've got some pot-pies to eat, better go pack a bowl.

Sorry I missed your nutrient descriptions. Found them now, and you've got all you need.

Seems you have your certification in trichome development, so I won't belabor that.

I also like trippy highs, which is why I'm my current crop is a sativa-dominant strain. WW is roughly a 50-50 mix of indica and sativa. As you probably know, sativa strains have a higher ratio of THC to CBD, whereas indica strains tend to contain more CBD than their sativa cousins.

That being said, when you harvest strongly affects the THC / CBD ratios. When I grew my WW, I think I "overcooked" it, but it is still pretty potent. Your idea of sampling the occasional bud to see how it's doing is a great idea.

I just hope you have more resolve then I do. Every time I think of picking a few buds to try them out, I think, "Wow, another week and that bud will be primo." Next week, when I go to cut it, the same message plays in my mind.

I actually managed to cut a few buds last week and they were good. I think I'll try again this weekend.

I did a background check on your WW and thought you might like to see the results:

White Widow is a strain of cannabis produced by Australian cannabis breeder Scott "Shantibaba" Blakey known for its abundance of white trichomes and high potency. White Widow has been reported to leave the user with a relaxed feeling. It, like most indica marijuana strains, is a good appetite enhancer. However, being a cross between sativa and indica it also has the sativa quality of mood enhancement - bringing on an interest in activities one may not normally enjoy. The strain won the Cannabis Cup in 1995.

White Widow grown in Amsterdam is known to contain up to 20% of the active ingredient THC and sells for approximately $20-$25 a gram in Jacksonville, Florida.

Thanks for the info! The mother of my plant was a heady high and wasn't really dripping with trichomes like a WW should be but I think, and I'm pretty sure my buddy even said that, it was harvested too early.

I'm usually really impatient but I know its worth the wait here. I don't want to miss out on that fabled last 2 weeks of explosive growth.

I've also read from some seed banks that white widow works well with the 48 hours of complete darkness right at the end to get her to really push out the sugars. I'm thinking about trying it.

If you do this, DO NOT water it first!

Sorry for the shouting, but I tried something like this for my second grow. I had read somewhere that leaving a plant in total darkness for a couple of days would force the plant to use its last reserves for flowering.

So I watered my plants and left them in total darkness for 3 days. When I went to check on them the soil was still completely wet. Guess what, no light, no water evaporation!

The only water for water to escape a plant's pot is from

1) evaporation from the soil on the top surface of the pot,

2) evaporation from the leaf mass (leaves and flowers).

The amount of moisture from soil evaporation is fairly minimal. And, unless there's "sunlight," evaporation from leaves in total darkness is very low as well.

I finally ended up turning the "lights" back on for a couple of days to finish drying out the plant. The flowers, which usually contract into tight buds when the plant dries out in "sunlight," didn't happen. Even the "restart" didn't cause the flowers to contract. I ended up with fluffy-looking buds, which might sound nice, but in reality sucked.

What I'm trying to say is that nothing much happens in complete darkness. No power source (sunlight), no evaporation.

I'll never try this again. However, your mileage may vary. As I said, if you try this, make sure your pots are fairly dry before you put them in solitary confinement in the dark!

Que pasa everyone.

Today I picked up some nice bud Sour Diesel x Bubblegum yummy stuff.

And I found a seed in the bag so I think I'll try and grow it here in a few weeks if/when I start another grow.

Today I also got some new snippers for trimming. They are goldseal brand thread nippers but i had heard from an old grower that they were awesome for pruning and manicuring buds. The design is perfect for it and I would highly suggest checking them out.

I used them to trim some fan leaves tonight for better light penetration and air flow.

And ggrant, thanks for sharing your experience with the darkness thing. I'll read more about it before I make a definitive decision.

Yesterday I had the day off and I was bored so I downloaded Jorge Cervantes's Ultimate Grow DVD's and have been watching them, lot's of good tips.

I also pruned some branches that were pretty tiny off the bottom of my plant. I put them in an envelope and had it on the vents of my pc monitor to dry out. I ran it through the vaporizer tonight and then smoked it and all I can say is wow! Definitely have a rocking buzz going right now. I can't wait to see what it can do when she's fully developed and properly dried and cured.. Should be nothing short of awesomeness

I hope you didn't suck any lady bugs up into your vape, LJ. LOL!

At this stage the buds are virtually 100% THC. When they ripen, CBD and the other suble constituents will develop as well. I guess a good analogy would be grain alcohol vs. 12 year old Scots Whiskey.

Something to look forward to!

Hey all,

So here we are at day 38 of flowering. She still seems to be doing really well. I had a droop emergency a few days or so ago but she was just thirsty. Leaves are showing mite signs still but scanning the leaves I don't see a lot of them and there isn't any webbing or anything.

I took off two more underling branches off that I didn't think were going to amount to much and I have them hanging up should be a nice couple of bowls in a few days :D

5 weeks in so 3-5 more to go. Even though I'm planning on harvesting earlier than later I will probably definitely have to go longer than 8 weeks due to any stunting from pruning, light burn, or under watering.

Well on to the pics. Some of them turned out pretty alright, others not so much, I'm not much of a photographer. At any rate, trichs are a popping and you can see them here

Those last three pictures of the colas came out really nice. LJ!

At this point, things go like Xeno's Paradox, you know, the one where you make it halfway to your destination, then halfway again, ad infintum, so you never reach it.

The last few weeks seem to drag on forever. This is also know as the

Space Case Time Paradox
