LED GROW-OFF Part Deux: XXX vs. 180w UFO

Re: LED GROW-OFF Part Deux: Hydro Grow LED 205w vs. 180w UFO

High wizewizo

Can you tell us the light gap you are using on each light. I'm interested in understanding your strategy here. Are you gradually lowering as they mature? or are you already as low as you can go and still have full coverage?

Hey Soniq,

The HGL 205w has been kept at 6-9" through out the entire grow with the exception for the first day at which it was put at 18" just to get the plants acclimated to a different light source.

The Jumbo 180w started at 18" as well, and then between the combination of me lowering and the plants growing its at its present height now of about 8" above the tops.

Both lights are as low as possible while still covering the canopy. The canopy on the HGL side is roughly 26"x26" and the Jumbo side is probably 30"x26". Even though the Jumbo's canopy is bigger than the HGL's, the 120degree angle of the Jumbo's LED's allows me to keep the light at roughly the same height as the HGL.

Thanks for bringin a lil'discussion to the thread...

;)

I really enjoy these LED journals. I've come to believe the secret is having the light height as close as it can be as soon as the plants can handle it. You grow looks to me to be right in that sweet spot where your getting the best of both worlds (max plants as close as can be).

Looking forward to a fantastic finish ;)

I love following these LED grows as well. I have grown with HPS for over 10yrs and ever since the start I have been waiting for the next breakthrough in lighting. I'm still on the fence, but so far, to this point in development, I've been pretty impressed overall.

Re: LED GROW-OFF Part Deux: Hydro Grow LED 205w vs. 180w UFO

Currently running an hgl 345W panel @ 20" away on Lowryder. Bleaching has occurred on a couple of them. So I am torn between this topic of distance from the tops.

Yet I have ran the 180W jumbo right on top of the ladies for the full grow with no bleaching until late in the flower!

Confusing....I hope we can figure it out...

Best guess from me is that its purely strain dominant... Oh yeah, and the LED being used with that strain.

As I've had multiple strains at same height from hps and occasionally would get bleachin on a few but not on others

So iunno....

How far into flower? The later is gets the closer you can be ;)

Re: LED GROW-OFF Part Deux: Hydro Grow LED 205w vs. 180w UFO

I would really like to see your finished results. I really believe that led lights are here and producing . But i believe that it takes another 14 to 21 days of flowering to get a good harvest. With electricity savings and not as much cooling required it is well worth the wait. But also i do not believe that you get the density of bud as with a hps gets. But again with the savings in your electric bill and with the heat problems being eliminated led are worth using. Not to mention the heat signature that is detectible with flir and other heat detecting devices used to spot indoor growers. So i say go led and beat the heat if you know what i mean. Lol

Update time

Day 41 of bloom

Yes, yes, it's been a while so it's time for an update for sure.... Sorry bout that life's just been oh so hectic as of late, so try to forgive me.

But yeah, here we are at 41 days into bloom just finishing up week 5 of blooming and tomorrow marks the start of week 6. So we got another good 3 to 3 1/2 weeks left for them to pack it on. The canopy on the ProSource side is a bit more wild so she is honestly kinda a bitch to capture on the camera, where as the HydroGrow LED side is pretty much perfect-o and very easy to get good shots of the canopy and colas. But enough talk on to some pics...

Just for fun, thought some folks would like to check out what's goin on inside my spinner that started 10 days behind the LED's. I'm using a 400w hps inside and I must say it's got me spinnin'. So here we are just 31 days into bloom on these girls.

Hopin to pull some damn good number outta here and by the looks of things thus far into bloom, I feel very very optimistic!

Re: LED GROW-OFF Part Deux: Hydro Grow LED 205w vs. 180w UFO

buds look smaller on the PS side, the HGL are doing better it seems, but now the spiner is looking bad ass, i was just about to ask what was going on with that. very very nice brother. how tall did you veg the spiner plants?

Thanks man, always nice to see you around and I always look forward to hearin back from ya.

Yeah, the veg in the spinner I think is whats gonna keep me from hitting my initial goals. I asked around on some vertical forums about stretch during bloom and pretty much everyone said I could expect them to double in size. NOT! I'm sure in a lot of other vertical set up one could expect that, but I suppose the spinner is no usual design. The internode growth on them is so damn tight, its like they were grown with t5's or LED's cuz they are just stacked right on top of each other. I am sure that the constant rotating had something to do with the lack of stretch, but generally speaking they only grew about another 3-4". This being my first time runnin these strains and my first vert set up I wasnt all to sure what to expect for the stretch, so I'll def do some things different this next time. I wont be vegging in the spinner this next round they will be veg'd normally over a lil'metal halide and once they are a good 12", I'll flip them on over. I only grew them to 8" this time around. But it's far better to come up short than to outgrow my system and have shit all facked up....

thats weird? usaly they do duble in hight, maybe when they spin and have that much light they dont streach. i could see if you veged them a little taller you could pull some great weight:thumb: but either way they look bomb as hell for 31 days or whatever they are. that 400w is making ur leds look real bad.lol. please keep posting pics of ur spinner grow also if it isnt too much trouble i have always wanted to see a good grow with one of those. how much head room do u have for the plants in one of those units? Imagen if you had a 600w hps in their with all 12 girls, shit bro that would be some bad ass stuff. 8" is kinda small but if you went 12-15" you would have a very nice plant that would probably pull some great weight with that unit. very nice + rep if i can. and yes your right its better be safe then sorry with a big ass plant.lol. just stick with the same strain and fine tun it.

The light and ballast thats in there actually are 600w'ers. I just have the Lumatek ballast turned down to 400w, because the manufacturer claims that you can produce 1000w of yield while only using 400w. So I'm checkin it out at 400w's. I have cranked it up to 600w a few times just to make sure that a 600w can be ran in there, but with the 440 cfm fan I have hooked up too it, it's not a problem at all runnin the 600w. But I really wanna complete this first round using the 400w setting and see what I can produce. I have a 600w hps over another scrog in my other tent that is 3 days behind the LED grow, so I have a nice lil'comparison goin for myself as to which is the most effiecient way to grow... A perpetual scrog grow with a 600w (2 2x4 aero trays one with a scrog grow and the other supercropped and they are a month apart) A spinner running 12 plants at 400w, and 2 different LED grows. Everything should be finishing really close together with the exception of the second aero tray under the 600w. So I should have a good guess as to which way I'mma go or who know's prob do it all over again a few times, fine tune each one and then make a decision. But its really fun to be tryin new things like the spinner and the LED's as grow HID's over trays for the past decade has become pretty mundane. I mean come on, it's almost the end of the world don't we needa spice things up a bit, eh?

ya i like to spice things up with my plants also, i tie them all up and shit, bend them over and all that god stuff:thumb:..lmao. na i here you bro, always good to try new things and learn as much as you can. see ive lost allot of yield by growing and trying different leds then just sticking with HID, but i am not tripping because i just need do one grow out doors and ill make up from more then what i would have had with hid. plus ive learn allot of things with leds and know one can tell me different about leds because ive been their and seen it with my own eyes, shit i was growing with leds before i even started posting on the forums.

its is very cool your trying all different types of grows,so you'll know exactly whats what. by the way keep me posted on this. i want to do a big SOG grow with my leds but i dont have a mother plant and it would be way too much money to buy them all from the club, i dont know anyone with clones anymore so that sucks for me. i need to get a mom sometime or find someone with clones for cheaper then the club!!

i would love to see pics of ur 600w grow if you have a chance, or you could even PM them to me if you dont want to post them, would be nice to compare to my 600w led grow since i never used a 600w hps only a 1k.

are u running co2 on ur led grow?

I'll work on gettin some pics of the perpetual 600w grow here once I find some time.

LOL, as for the CO2 on this grow, I've honestly been too poor to go fill my tank. Used it in the first few weeks of the grow and then kinda ran outta funds. I was planning on gettin it filled up this week though to finish out the last few weeks with it goin.

Re: LED GROW-OFF Part Deux: Hydro Grow LED 205w vs. 180w UFO

Just found this journal. Fantastic wealth of info and great grows.

You've got a great grasp on the tech, and your years of experience are clearly paying off in perfectly sized plants to max out your areas.
