Knifemaker's High Brix Apprenticeship

Morning, I think we've waited too long to transplant. My plant is now full on in flower.
She's gonna be a teeny thing :-(

Looks perfect to me....It's ready to transplant. It'll get bigger and fatter.

BTW, you'll be very happy when you change strains to another auto....or better yet a photo.

Transplanting 101:

Fill the new pot with enough dirt so that an identical container to what you're transplanting from (can use the actual plant in the pot if you don't have a twin) sits just below the rim of the new pot.

Place the veg container on top of the soil....pour more soil all around it, GENTLY pressing down the edge of the large container and GENTLY pressing in the soil right up against the veg container blank.....the idea is that when you remove the veg container you've created a perfectly sized hole to drop the plant into.

Flex, depress, and gently massage the veg container to loosen up the rootball. Pop it out carefully and using a sharp knife or razor blade make 4 vertical cuts from top to bottom at 90 degrees to eachother, about 1/2 inch deep into the root ball.

Sprinkle a tablespoon or two of Roots! into the new hole you made.....then carefully place the rootball into the hole, gently packing the soil into it roots.

Water it in with a gallon (if in a 7 gallon pot) of Transplant drench made at 3/4 oz per gallon of water with 3 mils of Tea.

Done.

Pretty sure if I'd started it in tge 7gal pot it'd be bigger. Based on what I've seen from others growing Heavy Chevy, this auto strain generally reaches 4+ feet tall and yeilds between 4-6 oz
I won't be switching to photos, they don't fit with my needs.
I'll get her up potted but she's alrwady pretty much done stretching so I dont see her getting any bigger.

You're saying that if you started in a huge pot that plant would be 4 feet tall? I don't think so....

What you do have are healthy roots, leaves, stems and soon buds. If you get it bigger in the future, great.

Look at all my other plants. I started almost all of them in their final pots and they do fine (other than the ones ive grown in the kit...) the ones I have up potted got transplanted prior to showing sex. Autos arent photos, and cant be treated like photos. This heavy Chevy will only have another 40-50 or so days left till its done. All the autoflower experts agree its best practice not to uppot at all, and if you do to get it done early

Dag nab it! I asked about just this because I've always read to start autos in their final pots but was told that theory had been de bunked, I think it was @Amy Gardner ...? Now I have 1, soon to be 2 autos in #1s. I wish I went with my instinct and planted in 7s. I'll be watching to see what happens.

You can transplant autos but it should be done before day 21 so they have time to recover before they start to flower....

Ok. Thanks! What I always read and may be what Amy was talking about was that when autos roots hit the pots is when they start flowering.

I feel like transplanting before day 21 is going to be touchy with not enough roots to hold the soil together....?

Yeah that whole roots hitting the bottom thing isca myth. Ive had riots coming outvthe bottim holes in the pot HC is in now since around day 10

roots hitting the bottom

Yeah ween - it was the ‘roots hitting the bottom triggers flowering’ myth that i said had been debunked. But i still said seasoned experts recommend starting them in the final pot... and added that I’d seen some folks transplant autos and go ok. I don’t do it myself tho! Final pot start to finish - no interruptions ;)

;) part of what i posted...
These days the prevailing thought about the starting in the finish pot is because they have such a tight and unknown/unpredictable schedule that folks like to impose no changes so the plant doesn’t ever have to adapt. I’d imagine with excellent transplanting practices this might not be an issue. But I don’t have the space to experiment with that. Many folks have done it.
I never recommended anything! Just talking about it :Namaste:

It’s not always a sure thing either, for me. I recently started one outside (in a pot) and extreme weather conditions (super hot, windy, super cold etc.) saw it starting to flower at 14 days and about 7” tall :laughtwo: I didn’t bother letting it continue...

Knife you’ve probably grown more autos than I have so you probably notice this too. With photos they stretch and then buds set in and fatten up. With autos buds set in but the plant continues to grow quite a bit. And as fast as autos grow they seem to grow roots and plants simultaneously. Id throw that girl in the bigger pot like the original plan and see what she can do. Might be surprised. Yield may not be what you were hoping for but the quality will be top notch. Also, from my limited experience and what I’ve seen from others here, autos are quite a bit more unstable when it comes to yield. I’ve seen one bean grow a nice size plant and another of the same auto strain grow only a single cola. Just my 2 cents. But I’d give the uppot a shot since you’ve come this far.

Oh I'm deffinately going to up pot it tonight. I'm deffinately interested to see how it goes.

Can you explain this a bit? I'm not sure what that means exactly. You have one tent and you want to flower and veg in the same space?
Yes. With autoflowers the light schedual doesnt change. I harvest a plant about every 40 days and start a new bean when one comes down. Photos would require at least 2 tents and changing light schedules. Autos make it easy to keep a small perpetual grow going with limited space.

I'd prefer doing 12/12 from seed myself....everyone on the same schedule, etc.
Lol you'd rather go 12-12 with photos than grow autos?
All my plants are on the same schedual. 18 on 6 off.
I have absolutely no desire to even try a photoperiod plant. Of it turns out that autos dont do well in The kit for whatever reason I'll move along to another system. The autos are here to stay.

Little H.C seems to be doing ok after her transplant friday night. She wilted pretty good for about a day but seems to be perking back up.
I'll get pictures tonight.
