KingstonRabbi - Mendo Madness - Outdoor - 1st Grow

well if you're only veging 2 more weeks I would say there isn't time to fill out the 18 gal pots. so when you go into bloom, the tops will be fighting the roots to fit in either way. possibly wrecking the first couple weeks of bloom.

the first couple weeks of bloom they will stretch, but if they are trying to fill a pot still at that time they will stretch down instead of up.

what about going to a 5 gal pot this time? and with better planning and up potting you can get them into the 18 gal pots.

That's what I was thinking about the 18g as soon as I posted. I thought 5gal might be too small though. Are you saying they should be root bound during the stretch? or just filling the pot?

I'm north of you, and we never get good vegetative growth until we start seeing soil temps in the 70's consistently. I plant in may, but never see good growth until mid-june, early-july. I see flowering right about on schedule with the autumnal equinox, Sept. 22 this year I believe. So your plants should be ready 8 weeks from that date if you can get them there. Good luck.

yeah just about rootbound when approaching the stretch. 5 gal should work good for ya. if it looks like your veg will go longer then you up it again if they like it. but from your 2 week guess i'd stop at 5

My mistake putting them out too early seems obvious now . The info i could find back then suggested this was more cold hardy strain. Wish i had found this site sooner.

Thought I might enter this plant in the monthly contest. What do you think? :tokin:
Actually just wanted to share an observation on cloning. This cutting from Black Cherry Soda was in grodan cube for 4 weeks. It was firmly in cube from week 1 so I though roots were already growing. Pulled cube apart and found just callus you see. Put it back, remoistened with 1/3 nute solution, root tips popped out next day. Same with others except one I put in soil and had roots next day. I never used nutrients with cuttings before (on other species). Cool to see the callus form. Gonna make a bubble cloner out of my aquarium equip next.

I joked on another growers journal that his girls were lucky to be inside because of all the rain this week. I take it back. My plants are the lucky ones. They loved it!:cheesygrinsmiley:
I think when I pull #1s (right front) side branches back out she will be bigger than #2 again.

Also trying on new pot sizes for final weeks of veg.

Repotted all 5 yesterday. They were all in 3 gal. I put #1, 2 and 3 plants in 7 gal, #4 and 5 in 5 gal. I went with the larger pots because I now think flowering won't start until closer to Aug 1. #2 is the only plant with pre-flowering, so they aren't ready to go yet. This is #2 rootball, slightly root bound but not bad. Removed matted roots and rubbed dirt into roots to loosen from ball. I watered new soil with 2 tsp Grow Big, 1 tsp Tiger Bloom, 1 tsp molasses per gallon.

Here they are in new pots. #1 has narrower leaves than others. I noticed this before but thought it was due to training stress. Now that they all have full size leaves its definitely different.

Here's a view underneath to show different branch patterns. Both were topped, #2 was trained into 4-way cross for spread, #1 was bent with lst because it had more side shoots to develop.

hey rabbit, I was wondering earlier if you were disturbing the roots when you up pot.

now I know.

best I have ever known, is to not disturb them at all. just get your new pot ready with some soil, have your plant slightly on the dry side, turn it over, popping it out without disturbing any roots, and place it in its new home. fill in around the ball with fresh soil. done. well after ya water it.

the roots on these plants are so fine that if you start breaking them by mishap you can stall and or kill your plant or a section of it might get goofy from root damage.

best to do it in one go eh

And today we start putting the plants back in bondage. In the last group picture they are as tall as I can let them get during veg to stay below fence during flower. I have to get them bent back down and spreading sideways.
The trunk bender below is from my bonsai tools. The stem on #1 restraightened quite a bit while I had it untied. Other plant stems still flexible, but this one is more woody. A few days of constant pressure should get it back to where I want it without risk of breaking.

Another bonsai technique I'm using is branch wiring. When I used ties to hold branches down they tended to also twist to one side. On a bonsai tree I would coil the wire directly on branch tight against bark. Here I pre-coiled the wire around pen at 45 degree angle, then 'screwed' it onto branch with gap between wire and branch to allow for growth. With wire in place I can bend and hold it any direction I want without having to secure it to anything, and I can reposition it anytime. I just have to remember to remove wire before branch out grows it. :Namaste:

hey rabbit, I was wondering earlier if you were disturbing the roots when you up pot.

#2 was the only one I touched the roots on. The other root balls went straight from old pot to new as is. I've always loosened bound roots on other species., but next cannabis plant that is root bound I'll leave alone.:thanks:

I was hoping to do this when plants were dry, but rains just wouldn't stop last week. I didn't want to water a root ball that was already fully watered and had been fed the previous watering. That's why I just watered the new soil as I filled bottom and then watered in the new soil around the edge. Maybe it was extra step I didn't need to worry about. Hopefully now new soil should have same nute level as old soil and roots will reach out.

MM#1 is back under training. Nice and short again. I need to finish wiring the branches to keep them growing sideways outside the pot rim. Lowest branch pair is now trained straight up to reach canopy so I have 10 colas. Considering topping to double that plus encourage more inner shoots to sprout up. I think I have at least 2 more weeks of veg. I hope that's enough time to be ready to flower.

Hey, Rabbi! (I do like Rabbi better than Rabbit! :cheesygrinsmiley: )
Nice job, so far, for your first grow; and sorry to hear you're battling Cancer.
Please checkout my current journal (top link in sig). I have a couple of videos on using MMJ to treat cancer. I HIGHLY recommend watching the Rick Simpson video and considering the RSO oil. You'll see the videos a few pages in.
:Namaste:

lmao my eyes musta been hella blurry, coulda sworn it was rabbi but that day I was reading rabbit.

sorry bout that rabbi.

Actually, it is "Rabbit" but apparently he left the "t" out when he created this journal. You can see the link in his signature to the old journal. I just like "Rabbi" better!

Rabbi. Rabbit. No reason I can't be both!

I have researched RSO and was using FECO (full plant extract) which is pretty much same thing. I followed the protocol for gradually increasing every 3 days. Problem was that even with half dose only in evening it was still feeling off the next day, kind of cloudy in the brain which is not good for an accountant. I was missing things and falling further behind. I need the unactivated THC, which still kills cancer and helps with after effects of chemo.

Juiced my first batch with flowers last night. This is gonna work much better for me. Last PET scan showed tumors shrinking with FECO. 5 month scan is in couple weeks. I expect good news.:Namaste:

Hey, Brother, that's great to hear! Goodluck on that next appointment! :goodluck:
